Amiibo Discussion Thread

I just received my 3 boxes from UPS. I will take pics and show any mistakes on them after I unpack and sort through them all. Very excited for Yoshi.

Ugh I had preordered Smash and the Samus figure at the toys r us site a while back to take advantage of the free amiibo deal. Last night I got an email saying the order wouldn't ship until late December so I decided to just cancel it. I got confirmation that the order was cancelled, and went to bed figuring I'd just hit up the stores today and try my luck, but I woke up to an email saying my order had shipped.... It's tracking and everything, they only cancelled the figure? Trying to decide if I should just wait for the game to arrive or get a copy and return the shipped "cancelled" one.

And apparently you can store data in them or something? How would that work game to game...

Good news is you don't have to worry about that, because each Amiibo can only store data from one game at a time. Want to use it on MK8? Better delete that Smash Bros data.

That's not how it works... Smash is the only game so far that actually stores data in the amiibo. The rest of them just read the amiibo like "oh this is Marth ~> unlocks something". Smash does that AND store data.

The only game so far, but there's bound to be other games that will store data.

And I am sure there will be more amiibos for those games and probably Amiibo 2.0 too so what.

It's a hobby enjoy it. Or don't no skin off my back.

Also a thing I was thinking about rarity. Be careful assuming something is or will be rare. If all the Marths and WFT sell out retailers can just order more and Nintendo can make more. This can and will likely happen for any and all figures so I don't think any one figure will be rare unless it is designated as such

If there is a future game that stores data (and there definitely is), it probably won't be compatible with the Smash amiibo. They are... Smash amiibo after all.
That sounds terrible. They really should be compatible. As far as I remember, other figures are forwards-compatible. Anything less sound cynically anti-consumer.

Ugh, why even use the amiibos then? Wouldn't it be re same to just saving the data regularly? I thought I understood everything behind these amiibo things but I guess not.

Went to grab a Villager for my brother at Target, and they had rows for everyone *except* Marth. Surprisingly (unsurprisingly?) Fox, Kirby and Samus were the three that had sold out.

Contemplated picking up a Wii Fit Trainer but I dont have a WiiU yet, and theres literally no reason to since the build on these figures isn't exactly impressive.

Picked up my preordered SSB WiiU + pokemon AS; Amiibo wise: Kirby, Marth, Link, Fox, Villager, Peach and Samus.

All in all, pretty impressed with the overall detail quality and paint jobs.

No it will be more than likely compatible but you will only be able to store one games data at a time on the current amiibos.

These are the things consumers need to communicate to Nintendo so they can improve future Amiibii yes I made that up. However, just because something is one way today does not mean it will be the same in future iterations. Tech will get cheaper and consumers will demand new features.

Still a little so-so on Amiibo but ordered Wii Fit Trainer, Marth, and Villager from TRU as part of their 3/$30 just in case they do turn out to be hard to find.

Just called my local GameStop in VT. No interest in buying amiibos but curious how they're selling. They said Villager is sold out, Marth never came in... I think they said WFT is sold out. They have threat but they're selling quickly so they said to come soon if I want to buy any.

Now that will be irritating, but I can accept that.

But definitely right on about communicating to Ninty.

No, they are very likely to be compatible with the Smash amiibo. In fact I think Nintendo has even said something to that effect...in games that unlock something with a Mario amiibo, you can use any Mario amiibo that they may release in the future.

Yeah, it's a limitation with the NFC tech. Nothing Nintendo can actually do about it except improve the tech themselves or come up with another solution. It really depends how they decide to implement Amiibo usage into future games.

so I got Mario and Link, only because I thought they had immediate working access to both Smash bros and Mario Kart. Have yet to test them though, but they look cool

I think that the "one save at a time" part tells us that, unfortunately. Of course future amiibo can change that, but I really can't see Nintendo producing a game where you store data and MUST erase your amiibo so you can use it again. They wouldn't design it that way, IMO. It sucks, though, of course

You can unlock stuff and still not store any data

I agree on the irritating part but I believe they were pretty up front at E3 about it. They just need to make it possible to not entirely lose your data or patch the way Smash data is handled so that newer games can read and write to the Smash data without losing it

I don't think it's an NFC limitation, I think it's a storage limitation, in terms of how much space is actually on the Amiibos.

Really though I don't think it will be that bad of a problem. There isn't even a second game announced yet that saves data to the Amiibo. We probably won't have one released for at least six months, minimum. By then I won't care at all about the Amiibo I leveled up for Smash ages before.

It is an NFC limitation, we went over this in a thread when it was first brought to light.

NFC technology doesn't support the ability to store a whole lot of data, this isn't something Nintendo is doing to be anti-consumer.
People who cite Skylanders as a better example of this toy + game concept seem to forgot one thing; the Skylander characters are identical across all of the games as far as the abilities "saved" to the figures go. If they weren't, you'd have to use a different figure for each game.

My Samus, Kirby, and Link came in.

Oddly enough the Link one came out best, his face is very well done and his sword is straight. Samus is tilted, lol.

Kirby is Kirby and came out fine, now lives under my monitor.

I wonder what they can use to store the data and fix that issue.

I'm not talking merely about storing data and erasing it. I'm referencing the issue of figures being forwards-compatible. The quoted post said Smash amiibo probably wouldn't be usable outside of Smash. That sounds anti-consumer to me. Just to illustrate my point, Disney Infinity 1.0 figures are compatible with Disney Infinity 2.0. If there's another Mario amiibo for a new game, that's fine, but it would be nice if I could use my current Mario amiibo as well. Really, if anything, having forward-compatible figures is good because it forces the figure-producing company to create compelling reasons for me to buy the new line of figures!

Just need to get the sold out ones and im set

So annoyed I got two Pikachus, no idea how that happened. Not worth the gas money to take it back though, lol. Will get Link from Best Buy the next time I'm out.

No really. The implication was that even if there are 4 Mario Amiibos, they will all be considered "Mario" for the purpose of any games the require Mario. Saving, unlocking, whatever.

Ohhhh, I see what you mean now. I wonder, I do wonder about that. I guess we need to wait until the next game that stores data is announced, really (probably Mario Party 10, right?). I'm curious now.

The same image I posted in another thread. I only planned on getting Marth/Pikachu and ended up leaving with Fox and Link too... then the Nintendo rep basically said I should get Wii Fit Trainer and Villager since they're in smaller numbers, so I ordered them online since the store didn't have any... god damn my life sometimes.

I think I got the only Wii Fit Trainer in East Oakland, and right as I was getting rung up, someone called to ask about it. No Marths though.

The thing is, WFT was hidden in the back and the actual Amiibo section only had Mario and crew, so be sure to ask what they have in the back. The guy offered to reserve the one Marth coming in, but that's a hole I can't afford to go down.

Ended up with WFT, DK, and Samus.
