Street Fighter 5 for PS4 & PC teaser trailer

Good morning everyone!

Time to brew up a fresh batch of coffee!

It really doesn't matter who said what and who's console warrioring for whom. Plenty of folks have pointed fingers back the other way with some "now that Sony does it there's outrage" type stuff. It's all childish. At the end of the day we're all consumers, and these deals aren't good for consumers.
That had nothing to do with my post or his.

As someone who didn't buy into the many iterations of SF4 except Hyper this will be the next SF I get since 2010. Finally they are moving on from SF4 and I can't wait to get back into SF again. Shame about exclusivity but I guess Capcom really needed the support. This gen is getting savage, exciting.

Well, by modern Western standards I'd agree, but I feel they're still hardly sneeze-at territory given what else these companies make.

Tomb Raider: 6.5 million
Street Fighters IV: 3.3 million
Dead Rising 2: 2.9 million
Sonic: Sonic Generations at 1.6 million is probably the worst off.

Actually, if you count all the SFIV versions that they have listed (vanilla, Super, AE), it comes out to 6.6 million, and that isn't counting Ultra or the 3DS version.

They've gone and done it... they've gone and woke the sleeping dragon now.

Sony should have left well enough alone and now they're going to get it. It's not enough that they're bleeding benjamins from practically every crevice of their existence. Now they go and throw immense moneyhats at a niche game like Street Fighter just to piss off the market. Why pay to keep a game out of the hands of as many gamers as possible? Why not put that money into first-party studios and games instead?

I know, I know... this is the way the business goes as they say. Well, they forced Microsoft's hands with their early sales lead and Microsoft only responded with an NPD whooping (source: musings thread) by way of incredible deals and value. Microsoft will undoubtedly follow this announcement up with some real megatons of their own.

Gears remake collection. A true Banjo sequel. Halo 5 beta in the hands of gamers. The next Bayonetta, Dead Space and Crysis as exclusives. Those are the kinds of blockbuster response announcements I expect, and then some. You hit Microsoft with a jab, you best be ready for a flurry of uppercuts coming at you in response.

Instant classic.

Well played Sony! I question how smart of a deal this is though. SFV will sell well but will it sell enough to justify a money hat? Isn''t Sony as a whole bleeding cash? But then again it may be worth extra glitter it adds to thier gaming portfolio.

Still for Capcom they have RE that sell 5 million plus and MH which are there major brands.
SF is only really big for the first version after wards sales get less and less .

Limiting it to only one console is dumb. Either way, it gives me an incentive to invest in a ps4 arcade stick now.

Not necessarily, if you have a PS3 one. Lab Zero made a PS3 driver freely available and it will be in PS4 Skullgirls. It's up to other devs to use it. There's no excuse why Capcom couldn't implement it.

Understandable it didn't make it in GG Xrd, but this isn't coming anytime soon. They would be remiss not to include it.

Probably because of Deep Down. There doesn't have to be a precedent for that sort of thing when that format works well for fighting games (judging by KI) and more stuff in general goes F2P now.

if it was free2play then isn't PS4 the only viable option due to XBLG being required for free2play games? basically the same reason FFXIV isn't going to Xbone?

I don't think Capcom needed help to create one of their biggest IP though.

This is SF not something like Okami. Even if i am a simple casual SF player, i am a bit disappointed that Sony also did the same think as MS here. At least use that money to help vaporware like Ninty here or at least make new IP like W101.

if Capcom did need help with production then an Xbox exclusive simply wouldn't sell in Japan. the PS4 might have been the only viable option

It's just the scope of the series that they have no confidence in that sticks out to me.

Street Fighter, Tomb Raider, Dead Rising, Sonic. These are all major brands that should be things the publishers are completely comfortable selling on their own since they're the flagships of the companies, yet here we are.
It seems to me that Japanese publishers were hoping that they could just put more and more games on handhelds until iOS and Android scorched the earth. Western publishers were always on console and PC, so the Steam/PS/Xbox combo works fine for what they are selling.

The way to cut costs now is to go mobile or digital only for PC and console. Mobile is a sardine can ruled by whomever can saturate the market with app install ads (read: Clash of Clans). Digital only on larger games for PC and console isn't all that tenable for something intended to be a mainstream hit because of the bizzaro nature of broadband in North America.

With the way LTE is providing better speeds for a lot of people than land line internet, I am surprised that a game publisher has not attempted an alternative store in the vein of Amazon that focuses on user curation and promoting new content, rather than simply listing the most downloaded apps.

I don't see what was so very "warrior" about my post. It seems fairly logical that one would have a different reaction to this given what we've seen from MS already this gen and last (and at least SF5 is coming to PC anyway and is not Sony-platform exclusive). It's like saying a store should do the honorable thing and not have Black Friday sales . . . then watch everyone else get the foot traffic on the biggest shopping day of the year.

I'm not accusing you of anything here but if people are seeing your posts as somewhat biased it may be due to the Sony logo in your avatar. Just a thought.

What a terrible announcement, simultaneously better and worse than Tomb Raider. Worse because there implies no timed exclusivity, better because at least PC gets a release. Still, this practice needs to die, unless Sony had a big hand in making this game, which I doubt, it's just buying games away from the competition which just hurts gaming as a whole.

But competition is always a good thing, right?

Awesome! :D I don't play Street Fighter, but I love watching the FGC and am always excited to see a new big game that will expand the community. Maybe I'll finally get into the series with this iteration.

Not if capcom wouldnt greenlight it and sony stepped in to help fund. Xbox owners seemed ok with titanfall exclusivity. Same with bayo on wii u

This exactly. Be salty if you want, but in truth Capcom is not doing that great and Ono said Darkstalkers got shelved based on sales of the network release so its possible that SF5 did too. Sony is not really one to just money hat a whole game, most of the time exclusivity on PS was based on a landslide difference in market share (PS2) or technical differences (PS1).

All that said this is fucking huge. The gamer in me (and most of us) would have wanted to see Dino Crisis or Onimusha but deep down I know those would not sell as well as I would hope/want. SF5 on the other hand will move consoles

I think Deep down and Phanta Rei are basically in development hell, which has basically pushed Capcom to take as little risks as possible.

What I don't get is that their Mobile division as far as I can tell isn't even doing that well There's no real apparent green pastures here just more contraction.

Yes, their success on mobile and PC f2p (outside of perhaps the Onimusha game) is pretty limited.

However, it's the lowest risk/highest reward option they can find, so they're investing in that instead of taking risks on other platforms.

They used to take risks on other platforms quite often, but since they've frequently failed, and cost a ton of money when they do, they're retreating to where they can fail very often and not lose a lot of money, and any successes in theory would make them a lot of money.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
It being exclusive don't really mean anything unless the Arcade,SUPER,Ultra and Hyper SFV are too.

I hate when people say this without being specific.

:p Yeah, I know what you mean! Seems that more people were upset at the fact that Tomb Raider was exclusive because they had gone with a PS4 and have no other means of playing the game (whereas, here, they can play SF5 on PC should they not own an Xbox One).

That was more to do with cross platform servers wasn't it?

Cross platform SFV play... PC vs PS4... Mmmm...

Well I don't know about a "big surprise" since this was literally the most expected thing they could have possibly announced, but SF is good. Also not shocked since the PS4 exclusive thing has been rumored forever now.
