Legend of Zelda Wii U Gameplay Demo

Yep, I personally found the format awesome.
Same here, it's very refreshing to see such big time developers just sitting around and talking about their games while showing actual gameplay instead of having PR people hyping up over the top trailers. This had a "Treehouse" feel to it and it's awesome. Half the reason Nintendo did so well at e3 this past year was because they ditched the grandious and went for a more down to earth format that showcased what really matters gameplay and people interacting together while playing. Additionally they have Nintendo directs now which grant them more freedom to drop little bits of info at a time so they don't have to blow it all on one single occasion. Just look at how they handled smash Wii u/3ds. They dropped a character trailers one at a time, short segments of info, smash centric directs and then one final blowout. This was a nice little sneak peak into the development progress and thought process. Obviously there is much more in store but it's still nice to get thrown a bone like this.

Whole thing felt like it was the Nintendo way of showing off some stuff without showing off too much. Alot of it felt more like a we told you so with showing how big the map is etc. People doubted Nintendo could do a big world in a 3D zelda game. This was Nintendo saying see we did it but we aren't going to show you much else now. Cya at E3.

I love the way this new Zelda looks, the huge landscapes, and where this game seems to be headed. Dont recall the last tine I was this excited for a new Zelda.

Looks interesting. I get the sense that Nintendo will find a way to make exploring the giant landscape interesting rather than just a mini map point of interest collect-a-thon. At least that's what I'm hoping for.

Zelda confirmed for 2015 and Star Fox confirmed before Zelda? This year was good for Wii U but next year is shaping up even better!

HNNNNGH?? Link?

I'm really, really hoping this is an early version of the game that doesn't have all of the elements in place. The graphics need serious polishing and the emptiness of the overworld is concerning.

But I love its scale and I have faith Nintendo will deliver me an enjoyable Zelda game nonetheless.

Nintendo carrying this console all on their own lol.

I wouldn't worry about the music. This is pretty much guaranteed to be orchestrated. It likely hasn't even been recorded yet. Older trailers for Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were full of low-quality MIDI tracks.

music is like the last thing that gets added. not to say what's in there now isn't a placeholder, but usually it doesn't get done until a few months before a game's complete, i think. there's still a good year to go.

skyward sword had a tremendously wonderful soundtrack. i wouldn't be concerned about this game's music.

Good points, each. I hope you guys are right. :)

My favorite songs from Skyward Sword were in the beginning of the game, particularly during the cutscenes. Didn't really dig the lower world songs or the battle themes.
Comparatively, Super Mario Galaxy had those fantastic Bowser battle themes (especially during the final encounter in Galaxy 1). I'd like something on par with those for Zelda.

I just don't get the cynicism. If there's *any* franchise that has repeatedly earned the benefit of the doubt it's goddam Zelda. Even the brief gameplay moments shown in this video make me feel like it's Christmas morning. This game is going to be freaking EPIC.

Doesn't sound huge to me

About the same as Witcher 3 just that this map looks like it is mostly empty landscapes, while Witcher's...

That's roughly double the size of Skyrim's map, coupled with Nintendo's superior art direction.

Christ almighty.

That is 3 times the Stratis Island of Arma 3 (and 1/5 the size of Altis^^). Big enough for a Zelda game. Hope it won't be clustered with icons and quest markers. I want that Wind Waker Adventure feel where you have to discover things on your own.

Also keep in mind that this isn't the entire world map, it's just the most zoomed out view that was shown in the video. I'm guessing that the entire world map will be at least 3-4 times bigger then what was shown, if not more.

I missed this live so I just watched it and, needless to say, I am blown away. If this makes 2015 as expected, that alone will make the entire gaming year for me. Yes, I'm that excited for this.

Hmmm. I'm not feeling this.

Graphics look kinda barren.

EDIT: Forget it. I watched the whole thing. They need to make another game in one year if they're gonna sell this to me. This looks downright bad. Ocarina of Time has a more lively world than this.

You are literally judging a pre-alpha game by off screen footage.

You are kidding yourself if you think the game they will ship is what you saw. Look how crazy different TP trailers from the final game.

Instead of not giving you any direction at all or marking them with numbers on the map like in Zelda 1 and LTTP respectively, I hope the game gives either vague or creative descriptions of dungeon locations, like OoT.

Be like:
In the mouth of the water dragon(river mouth)
In the land of the dead (graveyard)
In a pile of 69105 leaves (forest)
Underneath a Steel Sky

Only better written.

Not to be spoiled sport or anything, but I wonder what SCEA has in store for Uncharted? A gameplay trailer like Zelda or something even more polished? Usually ND is good at delivering quality promotional videos for their games. This weekend is just too awesome! Its like the Christmas edition of E3! Gonna miss it when its all over!

Probably a cutscene followed by gameplay. I think that's what they did with Uncharted 2 and 3.

Just wondering, in what ways can they improve the world map? More enemies, items, puzzles? In such a huge world, they're not going to be jam packing it with content in every square inch. It should be expected that there are going to be wide spaces with not a whole lot to do except run around and fighting the occasional enemy. At least they've made it visually appealing.

There ought to be puzzles scattered around, they just didn't focus on them here. Same with items and even sword combat.

I miss riding around Epona over a large field. Last time I did that was when I played TP in 2007.

This is a good way to sum it up.

Like you said Zelda has benefit of the doubt regardless. Might as well try downing it now when its unfinished because when its finished its probably gonna be shitting on everything else as usual.

Don't know ... I don't need it that big. Wind Waker was already overwhelming with all the islands, side quests ... But I know Nintendo will deliver great quality. And that matters.

Man if this game turns out to be Zelda 1-esque I will freak out. I love Zelda 1 and seeing something similar to that but in 3D would be amazing.

It's a year before release, of course it's an early version that doesn't have all the elements in place.

So I'm playing DA:I and it is a good game - some might say game of the year good, apparently - but goddamn is it ever just either tight corridors made of mountains or vast emptiness.

Is that level of populated acceptable or unacceptable?

Hmm, that actually looks like the whole map, I doubt it's going to be bigger. Really cool that they are showing it to us.

No, sorry, that's actually the final build. Nothing will be changed. :p

Could be possible but that doesn't seem to be the case.

The zoom out button is grayed out.
It could still be possible to drag the map around to other locations. We really don't know yet.

I somehow doubt this is the entire map, given that there should be other themed environments [ice, water, etc.].

Twilight was done for a long time, only reason it was delayed was so it could be on the Wii lauch.

Nah, Twilight Princess got torn down almost to its frame. Much of what we saw at one point didn't even end up in the final game.

It did get delayed so it could be on the Wii, but not solely so. It would have been a March game held back for Christmas as opposed to a Christmas game releasing at Christmas.

Which Zelda game does this? Curious. I really wanna know! Are you confusing them with Ubisoft?

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but remember Oceanhorn, the Zelda clone for iPad? Here's the main character:

And seeing this new Link he really resembles him. It's kind of hilarious to think how similar he looks since Oceanhorn was pretty much a Zelda clone, and now Link of the new official game looks so similar.

I actually think that Nintendo is marketing this perfectly. Like all good marketing, it is not going to win over everybody, but it is so different from everybody else in this industry. I always felt that Nintendo was taking a big risk by making a huge world. It is either going to be amazing or a complete disaster. It might never live up to my expectations, but I like this Nintendo.

Even showing early footage of the game is a huge risk since it is not even near release. At a time when it is hard to surprise anyone, I got to say nobody expected this gameplay footage to be shown especially from Nintendo. And starfox!

Even if you thought the video didn't show well, you got to admire Nintendo. They don't just show us another movie trailer, they sit down playing the game. No hiding behind a story and cutscenes. This game is real and running on the Wii U. To show it this early, it tells me they are very confident about this game and its release date. Like the earlier trailer, I think this early footage shows the potential the game has, but a lot is left to your imagination.

More so than any other Zelda, this one seems to capture the feel of the original Zelda. I watched the video many times but I found it was best to watch it with the sound turned off while listening to the Zelda Theme by Imagine Dragons/Konji Kondo.

It's so poetic. The visual style is the perfect realization of the Zelda world that I imagined I was in as a child. It is so different from any other Nintendo title or anything else on the market. It looks like a fantasy world. The scale of the world is amazing. I like how you can climb to the top of a cliff and peer down at the world below with the light peeking over the mountains. When they were zooming in and out on the map and finally zoomed all the way out, it blew my mind.

There was not a lot shown but I like a lot of the new things they are integrating besides the silly motion controls. The fact that epona runs like a horse could introduce some cool new combat. You can freely aim with your bow while riding your horse around.

Like Wind Waker HD, I like that they are making use of the gamepad as a map. I think since it is integrated into the gameplay from the start they could do some really neat stuff. You are running around with a map in your hand. I can just imagine stumbling onto treasures like the original Zelda.

These teasers ask us to imagine. How is this all going to work? We know that there are going to be dungeons, but will there be barriers to enter them? .If it takes a very long time for Link to walk to the edge of the map, is there any other way of transporting around other than the horse or sail cloth? What other cool details are they working on? Has the combat changed? Are they just going to drop us into this world and have us roam around or will it be driven by a story like games like GTA? The beauty of the footage isn't what is shown, it is what is not shown.

I assumed this thread was for reactions of any sort, not just positive.

I'm honestly baffled by how bad this reveal was. seriously, they emphasized waypoints. WAYPOINTS. they could have reshown the first Oblivion trailer and it would have been more impactful. I don't understand what people are getting hyped about based on what they saw in that footage.

The idea wasn't to emphasize waypoints.

The waypoints were simply a great way to illustrate the scale of the map once they zoomed out, since Link's location and the location of the waypoint were both shown on the map--and we then saw that Aonuma still took a long time to reach the waypoint.

I know it was a demo, but was I the only one who thought then open world implementation felt extremely empty (and there simply to make travel longer and the world to feel "bigger")?
