I'm anxious and fearful of the Bloodborne review thread that'll pop up in the future. Miyazaki fucking up a souls game is highly improbable, but any issues that are addressed will either enrage Souls fans and cause a bloodbath where some people will want to burn down IGN's headquarters. Or some will claim that the Souls series peaked with Dark Souls 1 or Demon Souls and that Bloodborne is a terrible game.
Or I'll be wrong and there will be a nice, even, middle ground.

Here's the thing though. You wanna compare DS2? You don't JUST compare it to it's own franchise. You compare it to the entire gaming landscape at the time of it's release. DS2, despite its huge flaws, is still likely my GOTY because it was so much better than almost anything else I played the entire year. It's absurd for me then to say the game is a 7/10, but the best, compared to other games I'd rate as 9s.
Pretty much, the only other things I have wanted to play as badly as DS2 this year aside from MGS, were Vampire Bloodlines (2004) and Arcanum (2001), that says a lot to me.

The comparison I've come up with is that episode 4 of Gurren Lagann is shitty and hard to watch. But that's because it's part of Gurren Lagann. It's not anywhere near as bad as the worst anime has to offer, and it only feels like it is because it's Kamina and Simon, goddammit, and they deserve better. No one gives a fuck if a game you like got good reviews.
Like with most things, you need balance but you're never going to have a "perfect" review system. It can be improved sure, but you'll always have to take them with a grain of salt.
Honestly though if someone does an in depth review of a game, and then a major patch is released or fixes are made later, that review should be updated to reflect the changes made, because the previous review is now moot.
And if you aren't dedicated enough to do that, get another job pls.
I definitely agree, but people usually don't have/can't afford the time for that sort of love and dedication to games these days sadly.

It does a lot of things wrong, but I think overtime, as I've come to terms with Dark Souls 2, I appreciate it for what it is a little more as time goes on.
I'm sure somewhere down the line the game will grow on me like an annoying little brother, but right now I'm still burnt out on its faults.

Then its easily one of the greatest games of the year, no question. Much better than games in its remote genre. But I just can't see it as a great game when those other games do exist. They took one step forward, but two steps back with everything they did in that game and in the same vein as your comparisons to other games of this year, I can't justify giving it like a 9. Not when they had multiple chances to build on what's right and follow a blueprint and fucked up. I can't reward that with such a good score.

That's why I personally look at streams before I buy a game. Sure I might get slightly spoiled, but I know what I'm buying without being colored by fancy words from a review.

I believe since there is no overarching "complex" story tied to it, its way more interesting than a David Cage game. It's like Night Trap in a way. It's more in the moment of trying to survive in a horror movie. Actually, it takes the tropes from horror movies and embodies them into video game form, so you can't talk smack about her decisions like when discussing horror movies.Hey, why was Until Dawn a ton more interesting then anything David Cage could do?

I'm really excited that Bloodborne is gonna be a really fast spinoff. People are gonna judge it like a Souls-successor, but I'm really happy to see a new take on the basic concept.

I disagree. If a game comes out with bugs then they should be reflected in the review. 10 years later when people look back they wont read reviews. Let's look at VTMB as an example. People play that now because its a great game with the patches, no one reads the reviews and goes "oh shit it's a buggy mess". Reviews become redundant over time when you can just ask someone about the game instead.

I treat review threads like they're a spectacle, going back and going through the Uncharted 3 review thread is always a sad and comical treat.
And you're right, reviews are purchase justifiers for the majority of people. For people that engage in a lot of B tier titles reviews don't matter at all. Nier and Deadly Premonition are two of my favorite games last gen, and they're viewed as weird, janky garbage games. I don't hold grudges for reviewers that felt that way, because those games weren't created for everybody in mind.
Hell, being a fan of Resident Evil 6 has taught me that taste and preferences really do exist. Taste doesn't mean "I value the good things" necessarily, it could mean that some people seek out very different things compared to other people.

Reviews aren't the problem, people over reacting and going "WHAT HOW DARE YOU SAY SOMETHING NEGATIVE ABOUT A GAME THAT I HAVEN'T EVEN PLAYED YET!" Also the fact that no one actually reads them and they just end up reading the summary near the score.

Reviews feel so pointless to me personally. Like I LOVE giant bomb and their content, but I wouldn't touch any of their reviews with a 10 foot stick. I'd much rather hear their thoughts on the game in a quick look, or especially on the bombcast when they go into detail about what they thought after they finished it, without talking about their score.

Obviously the initial review should mention any issues. But if they care enough to make fixes or release a major patch in a reasonable amount of time, those initial reviews have been nullified within a relatively short amount of time as well.
I'll use a dumb example that makes my point. People were pissed Sims4 didnt have pools. Sims4 now does have pools, and this happened within a few months of release. Therefore the lack of pools shouldnt have any bearing on current reviews.

What bothers me is how radically different a game can be from day 1 to last day of server support.
Last gen had too many games that were broken out the box, but we should be at the point where the product ready to shipped isn't requiring a day 1 update.
Master Chief Collection not having proper working matchmaking is dogshit unacceptable!
