36 minutes of The Order 1886 gameplay (offscreen)

Just watched most (didn't want any more spoilers so stopped midway!) of the video and I am now truly hyped for this game. Must confess I was getting sceptical after all the negativity surrounding this game from some quarters of the press and people here on GAF. Some people will continue being lukewarm to this game and that is understandable as it seems a story heavy tps which relies a lot on it's story and setting hooks. Exactly the aspects that I am truly digging after having viewed this video. Even if the action turns out only average I am positive the ambience and setting will make it up for me at least.
In short the Order is now one of my most anticipated games of 2015.

Good Lord, so gorgeous. Can't wait to experience this firsthand.

I do hope there's more than one stealth kill animation. That single knife kill will get old real quick.

There are larger areas with lots of NPCs and crazy vistas. If people are going nuts over this, their heads will explode come full release.

Wait and see.

Hope they release a couple of screenshots before February, they're spoiler free and can get more people interested.

Shinobi selling the game better than Sony did in a year

I don't "get" why the game had a bad rap. I've always liked it, and my many posts defending the game and making gifs of it over the months have reflected that.

I think someone said something misguided PR-wise "30 fps was targeted because it's more cinematic" and neogaf types were off to the races.

If he more smartly said "it's 30 fps because we wanted to do a higher level of visual fidelity than is technically possible at 60" that wouldn't have changed what the game is, and yet it probably wouldn't have had the negative perception that it has had.

Looks incredible. It's crazy how seamlessly it goes from cutscene to gameplay and sometimes you can't even tell which one is happening.

I really wish I could play this demo for myself. I hate watching people who have no idea what they're doing. That lockpicking part in particular was painful.

the ship is going down.

female order person: "I'm going with you"
male order person: "no, stay here, my brother told me to bring you back safe" or something.

since she's ostensibly in the team, can't she risk her life the same as anyone else? I guess I was sort of hoping that since a younger person is in this supposedly elite order, that she's a full member of the squad, respected and capable.

not that big a deal, I guess, but that exchange did get a bit of a groan out of me. the "protect the female character" stuff gets old.

Lady Igraine was inducted as Galahad's apprentice under unknown circumstances (probably has something to do with that exchange). May be it isn't related to gender at all? You might be taking it out of context.

Galahad has promised her brother (probably another member of the order) that he would return her safely and they also have a "thing"

What? I don't think they have a "thing". That would be sacrilege if they did. It is a teacher-student relationship, same as Galahad and Lafayette.

I can say with 95% confidence that dismemberment of humans would be removed for the EU release.

Why?

The Last of Us has brutal dismemberment with the shotgun as well. You blow peoples limbs off when you are up close. I live in EU (the Netherlands) and that didn't get removed.

that may be, but regardless of the reason I'm tired of the inevitable conclusion that it's 3 old white guys and the one female is, of course, young and pretty and oh we must all see to her safety. regardless of the story explanation as to how you get to that place, it just feels so predictable that that is where we are. I'm not anti-old white guy, and I'm certainly not anti-pretty girl, I'm for all of these things, but the overall configuration of characters and protect the girl stuff, regardless of how we got there, is what I'm tired of.

again, I don't want to blow it out of proportion or raise a big fuss, I'm just saying that I groaned.

I was loving it until the second there was insta-fail QTE. Why on earth do developers use one of the most awful gameplay feature ever existed? It killed most interest in this game. Only game I can put up with this shit is Bayonetta.

I groaned too but then noticed that the young dude in the Order is sent off the ship as well. So it's more of an old/young thing than a male/female one.

Well to be honest, if this is a historical piece to some sense... wouldnÄt these dudes have classical/historical views towards sexuality? Especially in the victorian age?

I mean... they are killing rebels (who sound just like some sort of oppressed industrial working class from what I have seen).

It irritated me when I saw that in the video too, but RAD has stressed that the QTE's in this game are all branching for the most part, so failing just opens up another possibility in the same QTE sequence. One of the demos from before showed that off.

The French member Lafayette is the newest addition to the group, and younger than Lady Igraine. And the only member who really constitutes as being old is Sir Percival.

Give me a rough estimate of how frequent the QTEs are in the game. (I want to settle a bet.)

Here's my thoughts on QTE.

One-off cutscene QTE, like those in RE4? I don't CRAVE them, but honestly I don't really care much either way.

What bothers me is how the melee takedowns are handled.

Observe:

svjqJHN.gif

He's running around in full player agency mode, trying to take out the enemies. He bumps into one at close quarters and hits the melee button. What we get is a sequence that cuts the camera to a "cinematic" view of the takedown.

This is the absolute WRONG way of doing it. It's jarring and disorienting and interrupts the flow of the gameplay. The camera should remain basically as it was, perhaps panning/zooming just a bit for emphasis, but nothing jarring camera-wise.

Finally looked at the footage.. Off screen hides a lot of faults but this is some CGI level stuff right there. The gameplay seems very good. The recoil is very prominent, hope they don't nerf it!

I think they need more contextual animations for running, especially, running through doors or tight corridors and by the wall should affect the running animation but it currently doesn't seem to, the full speed run animation seems to be in effect even when going slower due to a tight pass, which is jarring given how good everything looks. Uncharted 2 went overboard with this (touch the edges of door/wall almost everytime), UC3 was very good, UC4 seems to have perfected this.

Why?

Well, those are removed in middle east versions (including Turkey, whether you include us in middle east or europe) and Germany as well (I think). I thought it was the case for the rest of the EU like Germany.

I respectfully disagree. I don't think it interrupts the gameplay or is disorientating, in fact i think its really smooth the way the animation of the characters continue into the cinematic melee and it looks awesome.

Umm am I crazy that all seemed completely seamless.

That was only multiplayer right? I think it is censored in the Netherlands as well (SP is as gory as everywhere though).

Nope, I like it that way, very cinematic and cool. It takes control away for literally half a second.

Do you guys see why developers have to constantly dumb down their games? That was brutal to watch.

The lockpick is really simple in this game... I could do it in seconds.

i really hope that this will be fixed...i hate so much this kind of thing in games, it's too hard to do a collision detection with that body ?

Aww yea. See? All they had to do was show a little clip of something like this, and the hype would be through the roof.

My cousin can't get pass one of the puzzles in UC3 and quit on the game. Dude loves his Fifa and GTA V.

Kids these days.

Why didn't Galahad use his machete? :(
What is the point of carrying that weapon when Galahad just uses his punch time after time? :(

I'll have to play it for myself to really make the judgment, but right now I'm leaning towards insta-fail cinematic QTE being the worse crime. What could be stupider than entering a brief cinematic, failing a button prompt, game reloads, instantly starts brief cinematic again? Probably something is stupider. But that's pretty damn stupid. It takes what is supposed to be an impactful moment and instantly makes it a chore.

This motherfucking game! I thought I was looking at a cg scene at the beginning.

Wow, this demo took me from 10% interest to 95% interest. Almost a sure buy for me. Anyone know how long the game is?

This and this ^ Exactly the way I felt.

The Order needs to become a franchise, but preferably, only one game per console generation, so each time we are truly wowed and say "this almost looks like CG".

I'll be looking forward to the sequel on PS5 in 4K and even more complex / detailed graphics.

Depending on how good the first one is, I don't know if I could be patient enough to wait for next-gen haha
