Patrick Klepek is joining Kotaku

This is going to be fun.
Famous premature words?

I kid. I kid.

Hopefully next on the hire list is a website designer.

I've actually enjoyed reading Kotaku's stuff recently, but I hate going to the site. it's so ugly it should be illegal

I stopped visiting all Gawker sites a few years ago when they first made their big redesign. It was perfectly fine as a typical "list of articles" website like Joystiq still is, but after they made it this weird, split screen garbage I never went back.

It's better now that it was when it first changed (it went back to more of a single column structure, but it's still not great), but now it's just a mess to read if you just want video game stuff. It's seriously structured like this now:
Kotaku Article
iO9 Article
Ad/sale
Summery List of Articles from all over Gawker
Kotaku Article
Kotaku Article
Summary of recent Kotaku Articles
Gizmodo Article
Ad/Sale

Good for him, he never really fit in with the Giantbomb way of life.

He's a reporter and Giantbomb gives barely a fuck about breaking news on anything, really. And they shouldn't, they have an entirely different set of strengths.

People in the game journalism business must drool over a job at Giantbomb. Still can't believe he gave that up for Kotaku.

Makes more sense as Kotaku is all about the written content and Patrick seems more at home doing that. Plus Kotaku folk are all spread around no? GB needed people together to make content.

Kotaku has gotten a lot better over time, I still think they are internet-angry for the sake of being internet-angry too often and have way too much shit from other Gawker sites but they are moving in a decent direction.

Hope this works out well for him. Maybe they'll give him a pay bump and he can bankroll a new Evil Bong.

As much as I'll miss having him on Giant Bomb streams and podcasts, this seems like a good move for both him and Kotaku.

Looking forward to seeing who GB hires to fill the void. Assuming they're hiring in New York, it'll be nice to have someone to rotate into the Vinny/Alex pairing just for variety's sake.

They're hiring in New York now, so we'll see who it turns out to be.

Should have worked at Gematsu! But I have no idea if their writers get paid working there. Gematsu has become my go-to site for news about games, besides GAF. I haven't visited Kotaku in years. I find the user interface "too busy" on the eyes.

Kotaku is becoming god-tier. Hernandez gets way too much hate and it's depressing because she's one of the best writers there is at Kotaku.

So what drew him to Kotaku then, whats Kotaku allow him to do that GB didnt?? I was half expecting his new role to be in a completely different industry but the fact that its still games related begs the question was he unhappy at GB??

I don't. Klepek said that he's been technically off of GB for a few months and that he only announced it on the podcast Monday?

He seemed disappointed when they hired Dan/Jason by the retweets he made...

I haven't seen the retweets but that is a super weird (and unprofessional) thing to do.

He unfavorited these after someone called him out for it.

The weird thing about this is that if Klepek knew that he was leaving for somewhere else, why would he care, or if this prompted his move to somewhere else due to the hires.

Good for Kotaku. Him and Schreier both being on the team definitely raises their integrity quite a bit in my book. Hope he gets some kind of audio or video content going, too. I'd hate for Patrick to do only written stuff.

I like how so many people seem to be so knowledgeable about Patrick's motivations and circumstances and about what it's like to work at GB and Kotaku to disapprove of this so much.

Congratulations to both Patrick and Kotaku.

It's a perfect win win situation as far as I'm concerned. Quick Look Solos are boring, the morning show was meh, playing horror games with a face cam is some YouTube stuff I absolutely don't care about. I love GB and hardly ever consumed any of Patrick's output. It's like he wasn't even a part of that video centric site anymore. Now he can focus on writing for a bigger site with more access to key figures and that's great.

Giantbomb means having a personality and talent for video content. Lots of it.

Patrick was a good writer. It's not that strange he left for a writing position.

Good for all parties.

GB isn't a news or written article site and Patrick's strengths were never his on-camera stuff. Patrick writes for a site that has actual text readers and GB frees up a spot for an additional GBeast hire.

Kotaku has improved itself so much in the last few years and it just keeps on improving. Quite an impressive about face.

Polygon could learn from Kotaku. (Which is funny, because Brian Crecente, the EIC of Polygon, was the EIC of Kotaku before Totilo)

Chris Grant (ex-Jostiq EIC) is the EIC of Polygon.

To be fair, he tried to stay relevant with stuff like the Interview Dumptruck. But those basically stopped after a while. But people go to GB to hear people talk over games, and I think most solo streams are kind of hard to listen to. Heck, they even stopped those Retro QLs that they did off an on from their bedrooms.

I think it's the latter.

Klepek has a resume that would make most would be games journalists blush, he could be hired anywhere he wants, realistically.

Kotaku happens to have a diverse staff, something that Klepek could feel proud about.

But..it should be interesting. If his articles are half as good as Jschriers, then it should be a great time there!

Good for Patrick and Kotaku, I guess.

I haven't browsed Kotaku in years and I doubt his presence will be enough to draw me back.

Next time Patrick's on GB I hope he shares the insanity behind the scenes of Kotaku.

Big loss for GB, good get for Kotaku. But as others have said: Klepek and Kotaku is probably a better fit.

He managed to broaded the spectrum of games getting discussed on GB considerably and his departure is a serious blow in that regard (hopefully GBeast will pick up the torch in the future).

That got hampered once he went home and the people he found were already in GB content. :p

Was unfortunate since i liked that feature.

It's kind of weird how everyone in the last thread (which BTW, we're not returning to the Dan Ryckert rodeo) pointed out how Patrick was obviously in a sticky situation at GB given how he was cut off from the rest of the crew in terms of video content (GB's main focus) since moving back to Chicago, and now that he's joining a much larger site that caters to his style of reporting more, it's suddenly "well why would he leave his cushy dream job at GB for an obvious downgrade?"

Is it the same people posting? I imagine having "Kotaku" in the title draws a different crowd...

Makes sense. Nobody goes to GB for written content. Kotaku is primarily written content.

Yup. And written content is what I prefer.

Good move, and good luck to Patrick.

At Kotaku, once I get past the Gawker nonsense, I only ever read stuff by Jason and Stephen, which is quite often top notch. I guess I'll add Patrick to that mix. The rest of their writers are not bad writers, but the subject matter ranges from forgettable (Luke) to downright atrocious (the Ashcraft guy and Patricia in a race towards the very bottom, in that regard).

The last time I read an article by Patrick Klepek, I think it was on 1up.com. He wrote an "article" about how Nintendo would not be putting multiplayer in Metroid Prime 3. It was absolutely one of the least professional articles I have ever read, and peppered with a very crybaby tone that lacked perspective.

I think he'll fit right in at Kotaku.

If you want to be a Gaming Writer rather than a Gaming Personality, then Kotaku would be your first choice over Giantbomb. If Patrick never joined GB then Kotaku would be the a good place for him. It only seems like a "downgrade" because many folks care way more about GB than Kotaku.

Don't waste his talents Kotaku.

Damn that's an eerily specific thing to remember.
