Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Do OLED TVs have that blotching issue? My Vita had that pretty bad and it was pretty off-putting. No way I'd want a TV with the potential for that to happen.

I'm pretty sure they're continuing the 55EC9300 in 2015 as their only 1080p OLED.

Edit: Yup, see here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=965365

Thanks for the heads up and correction.

Damn the P series 2015 Vizios can do 4k at 120fps with their hypermode or whatever they are calling it. That's really damn cool, we are far away from a single card doing 120fps on 4K. But damn if they put that into 1080p TVs I'd buy that way before a 4k TV, even if it is a mediocre Vizio.

Where abouts are the details on their 2015 models, didn't think they were at CES? The current 2014 models do 120fps in 1080p, but not 4k. I didn't think there were any chipsets with the bandwidth to carry 4k/120 unless they're planning on putting Displayport 1.3 or something on there?

2014 models only I believe, likely soon to be EoL/discontinued if not already. All their announced 2015 models are 4k only if I'm not mistaken.

Yep.

There's one reason 4k OLED might go below $2k - they are being built on a brand new factory which LG has just finished. With this factory ready, LG should be ready to bring OLED closer to the mainstream. That means more competitive prices and more units produced and sold.

Until now, production of OLED sets has been so low that LG might as well charge high prices.

Bought a bedroom TV yesterday, was looking for something small and cheap. Planned on a Samsung, LG or something decent around 32 inches. But I could not pass on the 48 inch Westinghouse that was going for $299 at Best Buy. Not the best brand but that price has pretty much half of everything else.

I'm likely going to be in the market for a media room this February (pending how my bonus turns out in light of the plunging price of oil). As such, my preliminary budget for the whole project is anywhere from $6-7k, including a TV, surround sound system, and a sectional couch/other furniture. That means that I likely can't blow more than $2000-3000 on the TV, as I want to get the 7.1 surround sound wired through the ceiling and I'll have to condition the room a bit (blackout curtains and the like). The viewing distance is approximately 9-10 feet, so I want a 65"+ set that's great for both films and gaming. I currently own a 65" Panasonic ST60 in my family room, so I don't want a huge step down from that one in image quality. I've been doing some research the last few months and no "obvious choice" has jumped out at me like the ST60 did two years ago. My main priorities are image quality first (deep black levels, accurate color reproduction, minimal color streaking), with input lag at a close second. I can deal with some, as I figure that for online gaming my ping will be higher than my input lag anyway, but it can't be cumbersome. I'd likely prefer something more along the lines of an LED TV to avoid image retention, a problem I've been having more specifically with Destiny of late. Power draw is of no consequence (cheap electricity). I'd really appreciate any help someone more informed than I could give me.

One last thing: I spoke too soon when I said that my TV has no forward directional buzzing. It does, actually. It just didn't kick in immediately and only started up after I had racked up about 45 minutes of use on it. It isn't noticeable unless sitting directly in front of it and I did watch a movie on Netflix last night with the volume at 50 and it drowned it out when positioned in front of the buzzing. Pretty disappointing to have something like that going on with a top-of-the-line TV, how it could have persisted in the line since it came out in early 2013 and no likely fix action ever planned. Hell, no one has still ever figured out what causes it.

I have the same samsung f8500 and my set also had some pretty annoying buzzing right out of the box. I found that simply loosening the top left (if viewing the screen, top right if you are looking at the rear panel) screw completely took care of the buzzing sound. I'm not sure if this is the same "forward directional buzzing" you have but it was an easy fix for my set which I absolutely love.

Roughly how many hours have you put on your TV?

Also, after long gaming sessions do you get any temporary IR with OLED?

600-1000 hours I would estimate.

No, haven't seen any. I've played quite a few games with static UIs, including Towerfall with its permanent 4:3. For 6-7 hours at a time.

I got this information from CES coverage. So their 1080p Tvs right now can do 120fps? Any way to get solid information on that?

Like I would literally leave my house right now and buy a Vizio if it's true and put this Sony on the floor to sell.

Down side to oled beside price? All I've really seen is good. Why wouldn't manufacturer concentrate on that tech.

They are trying. They're difficult to make. Samsung couldn't get their production going at satisfying costs and yields so they stopped.

LG are the only ones who can manage at the moment. They use a slightly different technique based on patents they acquired from Kodak.

Sorry for the confusion, I should have been more specific. No, I meant it's their current 4k TV's that do 1080p/120. Their current 1080p TV's DO NOT, they're 60hz only as far as I know. To the best of my knowledge Vizio was not at CES and have not made any product announcements concerning 2015 models

I just received a Samsung UN32EH5000 and when I tilt the TV back and forth there's something that slides inside. I tried it and it works fine but it has me pretty worried. It's not like a screw or broken piece rattling it's more like something big shifting back and forth when it's tilted. Is that something that would be at all normal or should I just send it back?

Are Pre Superbowl TV sales actually a thing?

I believe so. I think people say around Black Friday and just before the Super Bowl are the best times to buy.

Hopefully next week we see some great deals, that or the week after. Right now the deals seem to be a bit thin.

Amazon is offering the LG OLED for 3k, which is about $500 off. That's the best I have seen so far. I would love a great deal on an awesome plasma but damn they are getting hard to find. The F8500 looks like the one to get but I can't seem to locate anything bigger than the 51". And right now that is $999. If it falls some more, maybe.

Is this a weekly sale price? Do they offer any extended warranties? If I replace my Kuro Elite with an OLED (it's bound to happen sometime), I want to get an extended warranty just in case I experience burn-in on it.

no - sale was one time shot and now that inventory is out, no longer avail.

Need to buy a tv. I need something for gaming. So priority are : no ghosting, not much clouding and good ish colors. Don't care for 3D, don't care for speakers.

I'd rather 40 to 48 inches. Europe by the way. Any selection ? I can't find any french reviews about ghosting and most friends got fancy tv but are broderline unplayable because of ghosting even of Sonys

So does 4k make games look noticeably better? I like to sit fairly close for gaming but that's probably still 4-5 feet from eyes to screen and that's only on a 48". Next set will have to be 55" - 65". Right now I have been debating Plasma, 4k LED or OLED. Of course, 4k OLED would be best but the pice scares me. If they launched it for the same price as the 1080p OLED, that would be awesome. Still expensive but that's a worthy future proofing price to start with.

I want great motion and picture quality but have never owned anything other than LCD in the past 7+ years so am leaning towards moving to another screen tech.

GAF, some quick questions. Do HDMI cables really make a difference? Even if the tv has a rate of 240hz? I've seen some crazy high prices on some brands. If that's the case, can anybody recommend a good HDMI cable under 50 bucks?

As far as I know, a cheap Amazon cable will do just fine vs the inflated prices of some other brands. I ordered 3 Amazon brand cables years ago and have had zero issues from them. I don't know anything about the newer HDMI formats and whatnot, so that might matter. I doubt you need a $50 cable though.

Are you asking if you should use HDMI?

If so then um.

In terms of which HDMI cable, if it transports the video and audio successfully, it's done all it can possibly do. The $10 HDMI cable is the same as the $100 one in that regard.

Can I ask you how much you got it for?

There's an ST50 on Craigslist for $450. Is that a steal? I can't tell anymore

I paid 2k for this set back in 2013. That set has a beautiful picture (best picture quality at the time according to cnet). That was the set that was stolen from me recently. *grumble*

I finally received my replacement 55X9005B from the local Sony dealership. Will be assembling it later tonight. All in all it took them exactly 6 days to deliver the replacement.

Fingers crossed.

I bought my St50 new off Amazon for about $950 two years ago. I'd say its worth it but I have gotten IR on it when playing games for hours at a time even though it always goes away after watching TV for an hour or two. Request to check for any signs of burn in or scratches on the screen and if it look good, grab it.

Also, mine is the 50 inch model. If he's asking $450 for a bigger size then yea that's an absolute steal

I've just find out that only the 50 inches version of the Sony W705B has the adjustable motion flow settings with the praised "impulse mode" for gaming, that's pretty disappointing.

I was about buy the 42 inches, do you guys think it's still worth it?

Whoa, that's pretty high.
High? Err... That's totally fine with gaming. It's the 100+ ms range you should be wary of.

If you want a crazy good gaming TV (for twitchy stuff like fighting games), get last year's Sony W8. That had something like 14 ms input lag in game mode. That is also the lowest any LCD panels have gotten around to.

Whatever technology can produce 4k TVs for the cheapest... so probably LCD, but until then, Plasma is the best, until they stop making them.
I just bought an LG 60" plasma at Costco. The sales guy said that they are not carrying plasmas any more after this stock is gone. I picked it up for $639 CAD plus tax. I couldn't afford not to buy it at that discontinued price.

Rest in plasma. I would have loved to get my hands on a Plasma 4k down the line.

Well, yeah.
I was just considering about switching from plasma to OLED, but not yet, I guess.
And while Sony is good, I tend to stick with panny almost my entire life (starting with childhood's CRT). =))
