A peek inside Notch's housewarming party

How much did he overpay?

Trying to find the comment I saw about it back when the thing about him buying the house first came up. Don't even remember if it had a number, just that what he paid was more than the house was valued at.

But now that I think about it the house came with all that other stuff so maybe when you include it all it evens out some.

Anyway, I think people were reading way too much into my comment. I didn't say "Notch is clearly depressed! Look at him!" I suggested the idea in response to a comment about the money getting to his head because it happens to people that come into a lot of money, they spend it frivolously trying to be happy, and end up feeling worse for it. There's as much or more chance that isn't the case here though.

Most people would have like to see more from him. He pretty much left the industry with an unfinished (billion dollar strong) product, many unrealized promises and projects and a lot of meaningless twitter-posts. It is just a waste.

He stopped working on Minecraft years ago.

I just find it funny he done things he said he was completely against on Twitter.
I am glad he found success. I am not salty if I make jokes about him.

Who they?
Girls famous when they were teeny boppers on Nick/Disney or something, but not anymore.

Why are people knocking it. If you have a billion dollars you gotta get a cool house.

Yeah, I don't think people realize just how much money a billion dollars is. In a crazy conservative fund earning 3%, he would get 30 MILLION a year in interest from doing absolutely nothing.

Second certified NaCl in the thread. First was chaosblade's.

I see... that's pretty cool to know. I've never played Minecraft but I know Java. Extremely unusual that he didn't do it in C++.. and yet it makes me pleasantly surprised.

Well, he probably used C++ as the programming language. I thought you meant if he used a game engine which I don't think he did.

The house doesn't really look an actual home, more like an hotel slash gallery of tacky things, but that view though. I'd just chill around that pool the whole day.

Come on guys, Notch always donated big money on kickstarter projects and charity gaming events. It's not like he is purely headed to make money.

The funny part is that he is a billionaire now because people annoyed him.
Didn't he was just tired of all that status he got after his huge success?

This guy on the right looks familiar... Who is that guy. Martin Garrix?

Yes, that's me on the left.

My guess is that the people I'd find interesting were not the ones who were camera whores.

(I'd exclude taking pictures with Notch though. He's the host.)

Photography was banned at the party, aside from me. I pretty much just hung out with the people I work with on the music side (Zedd, Selena, Martin Garrix, Kill The Noise, 12th Planet, Dillon Francis, etc..). I don't know any people from the huge developer side invited, aside from Rob Pardo.

Why is that DJ Zedd in like all the photos?

See above.

I almost guarantee you that 50% of those people have no fucking idea who Notch is.

Please do, i'd love to make tons of money off of you. The same people that make Notch's GDC parties made this event, and invite the same people. So pretty much 80%+ are all game developers or game industry people, the rest are usually DJs/musicians.

Just a side note, all the photos were taken with a Canon G7X so if you notice it's not DSLR quality, I didn't want to be "that guy" with a giant ass camera roaming around ;)

I thought Notch was a humble dude, not into living the rich mans life even though he is technically rich.

Maybe hes having a breakdown?

lol.

What's with this thread and everyone like it? You can live in a mansion and still be humble. You don't have to live in the slums to be "real". You can throw a housewarming party and not be on the verge of collapse. Lets at least wait for the day the guy starts bathing in Cristal, calling other people "poors", and generally being a dick to start assassinating his character. Shall we?

Lol at people assuming Notch is depressed or gonna go broke just cause he bought a fancy house.

The dude just outbid Jay-Z and Beyonce on a 70 million dollar mansion, packed it with Ferraris and a candy shop, and still has 2.43 billion left over. Think about that for a second.

Nah, Minecraft is all Java - the smartphone/iOS ports are C++ though. You're right in that it doesn't use a game engine.

I hadn't been keeping up on Minecraft news but after seeing people say he could afford 10 or 30 of those massive houses, I had to check out his net worth. I thought a while ago he was a millionaire, worth maybe 100 million and I find out he's well into being a billionaire because Microsoft has bought his game.

Absolutely crazy to think he's this rich from a Java game. This is not a common occurrence though by any stretch.
I saw him on a talk show about a year ago and he seemed like a pretty typical quiet and not so sociable guy that I'd expect an independent game developer to be.
Now this is where he is.

I wonder how Major, Albert, Yusuf, Phil, and the rest of the 9 to 5ers at Microsoft feel seeing the years of revenue and hard work they've put in at MS being spent so frivolously.

So you were there. How was the party? Anyone tested the swimming pool?

Java programs are programmed in Java. Java is compiled into Java Bytecode which can then be read by the Java Virtual Machine. The advantage of the JVM/Bytecode is that it further abstracts the OS/Hardware from the code so that you don't need to re-write / re-compile your code for every OS / architecture. By developing in Java, he was effectively writing the Window, Mac, and Linux versions of Minecraft at the same time, if that makes sense.

Oh -_- damn it

See above. Your Java knowledge isn't wasted.

Doh! For a moment I forgot that Java itself IS a programming language. A very C++ like language but still a different language. Yeah, he definitely wrote the whole thing in Java by hand.

One thing I always wonder when I see massive houses is: doesn't it get lonely? I mean, it'll be big and empty unless you invite people over all the time. I've never seen any comments about this myself, so I'm curious if I'd be the only one.

They're going to milk the shit out of Minecraft so I doubt they care at all.

Rukes website can't handle the traffic, it stumbles between down and very slow.

Thank you captain obvious. It's on a pretty big VPS server in LA, so it's doing as good as it can without me spending hundreds of dollars more haha. Luckily if you keep reloading it pops up pretty quick.
