Bloodborne gameplay : The first 18 minutes

What's striking to me about Bloodborne's story is how personal it seems to be. The other Souls revolve around deciding the fate of entire kingdoms, while Bloodborne seems very focused on the player character and what they're trying to personally accomplish in the world.

That is very true. In Demon's Souls, the player character was just another person swept up in the calamity of Boletaria. In Dark Souls, the Chosen Undead was merely the latest in a long line of Chosen Undeads meant to link the First Flame
or, y'know, not.
But from what we've seen of Bloodborne, there are some pretty interesting mysteries surrounding the protagonist and their nature as a Hunter. Speaking of...

The female Hunter who gives you the mask drops the line, "tonight of all nights." That seems to imply that there is a specific reason that the player Hunter has arrived at Yharnam at this moment in time. I'm looking forward to finding out what it is.

Cant watch. So what's the death / levelling system for this game like?

They sticking with souls and bloodstains or they trying something new?

Same principle as souls, but it's "blood" now. At the end of the video you see the player die to the boss and his souls start ticking down rapidly, but the video cuts before they reach 0. So you either lose some of your souls or more likely all of them.

For retrieving your souls, it seems like you have to kill the monster that killed you to get them back this time, though nothing's confirmed.

I'm almost in disbelief that they're really going with the Cleric Beast as the first boss. That motherfucker makes Phalanx, Asylum Demon/Taurus Demon, and Last Giant look like hollow soldiers.

WTF AT THE SOUNDS THAT MONSTER WAS MAKING??!?!??!?!!?!

The sound that finally gave me the last push I needed and made me order proper Sennheiser headphones and a USB DAC

I could have bought a Wii U with this money, but after I watched a movie with my brother's headphones on during Christmas holidays, I haven't been able to stop thinking about how fucking amazing everything sounded

Yeah. Makes me wonder if it's not possible to go off in a different direction rather than fight the Cleric Beast. Maybe they put him right at the beginning in the same way Dark Souls puts the Catacombs right at the beginning - you can come here if you want, but you really shouldn't.

Just wanted to say the sound design is amazing.

The battles sound so full and rich without being overwhelming with sound.
The Blunderbuss shot in particular is so satisfying; punctuates the battles nicely. Exciting to think that it's only a starter weapon!

It seems like the enemy mob voices have been toned down somewhat, too. At least, not all of them would shout a full quip - most would just grunt, or scream when killed.

I've already spoiled myself too much, but I know it'll be an entirely different experience once I have the controller in my hands. Gonna take this one reeeeal slow, like the Souls games. Can't wait.

Why does everything have a shimmering effect on it, like a jagged-type staircase effect on all of the textures? Sorry, hard to explain what I'm seeing...

And that's a good thing.

I could realistically see the majority of players getting stonewalled by this boss, especially since blood vials are consumable and will likely require grinding to replenish. There's a trick that makes him much more manageable
(shoot his head repeatedly to stagger, then parry, then wait for him to regen his head and repeat)
but I didn't find it intuitive in the PSX demo and doubt a significant number of players will figure it out without outside assistance. I kept trying to parry him like normal enemies and got fkn rekt like 6 times.

I have a question though.. what's the combat controls like in these games? I've never been great with overly complicated controls and especially different combinations of buttons pressed simultaneously or in a particular order to achieve certain results (proper fighting games for example). Certainly not in highly pressurised situations like this game obviously presents to you. Is the combat fairly simple, like a dash/evade button, a light attack/strong attack buttons and that's kind of it? Or does it require you to be quite dextrous? If it's not fairly simple I know I'll have no hope in hell of getting far. I hope the difficulty comes from how you move around enemies and places yourself, and how/when you attack, rather than on mastering really complex controls. Anyone with some guidance please?

That is more or less a very good one sentence description of Souls combat. If that's what you're looking for, you are probably in luck.

Yeah. The Souls games will always need to balance the fanbase's desire for more challenge with the fact that a lot of people have never played them - Cleric Beast as an introductory boss seems much more weighted towards the former than the latter.

We've seen two, possibly three, bosses so far I think. Cleric Beast so far is my favorite, though the one in the co-op trailer that transforms as the fight goes on is cool too.

I skimmed through the video with the sound off and I have absolutely nothing negative of note to say so far, as far as I'm concerned Miyazaki have done it again.

I'm sure there's a catch, like an alternate path or an NPC partner or something. Miyazaki's design is a bit too deliberate to just throw this thing at the player straight-up, giving the player no outs. Still, (potentially) giving players Manus-lite pretty much straight out of the gate is ballsy as fuck.

Anyone else noticed how some enemies are begging for their lives yelling "No! Please!"

The enemy dialogue is fucking fantastic and was easily my favorite aspect of the PSX demo that didn't involve a certain hammer weapon. Just a few short lines added an extra layer of "weight" to the combat, if that makes sense.

It was terrible when Killzone and Second Son were downgraded, but it got really suspicious when Driveclub was downgraded. And just when you thought it couldn't get any worse they decide to downgrade the Order. I guess Bloodborne is no exception to this.

Text posted from an early draft of a post that's still in development.

Its in good hands though, I'm sure it will look amazing by the time it releases.

That was my exact impression as well.

I will get to watch it properly later but from skimming I clearly see the artistic style, powerful sense of atmosphere and general creativity I associate with Miyazaki's games here...I doubt jaggies or AA are going to upset me at all

"YOU are not wanted here!" Love their voices, too. The pitch-down makes them sound so gruesome.

Remains to be seen, the video gives nothing away on that score. Levelling and the signature "retrieval" mechanic are notably avoided completely in the video.

We see NPC's for buying/selling gear and for upgrading weapons, but nothing whatsoever on xp/levelling.

i dunno...i didn't see anything all that special until the boss fight at the end w/ the music. In desperate need of AA but this is early so maybe it'll get added in the final build.

I find myself repeating some of their dialogue when I'm alone in my house. Is that weird? :3

Nah, it's just fun to say! They remind me a lot of the ganados in RE4, who are also supremely quotable and spooky. Both are subtly-off villagers (or "city dwellers" in Bloodborne's case) who swarm you with torches and pitchforks as well.

If the final game turns out to have jaggies and no AA after that Dark Souls II debacle, are people going to boycott the game like they threatened to last year?

I've been lurking this thread since 2pm (an hour after it got posted) and I couldn't take it anymore. I have to watch the video!

Take me! Bloodborne!

I don't know about the others but Infamous Second Son was not downgraded, at least from what I remember, people assumed it was downgraded because the shots were from a different time of day, then it was proved the game was improved rather than downgraded. What exactly has been downgraded in The Order and Driveclub?

It will definitely hurt their attempt to draw more casuals or new players in. People that enjoyed the previous games will buy regardless of some disappointment with the visuals.

I thought the Dark Souls II debacle was an entirely different lighting system that was removed. I don't see how that's comparable.

But yeah, if that means the thread isn't the same shit as this one has been, please, by all means boycott.

It was hand-wringing over downgrades... Seems like the same ol' shit, but maybe there won't be complaining because this one's exclusive.

This game has never been shown off with graphics beyond what we're seeing here. There was no downgrade, unlike DS2.

Why would the people who were annoyed by DS2 graphics debacle pass this game up? Not the same scenario at all.

It seems like Bloodborne's hub area is in a dream, and you pass through this dream world every time (at least lore-wise) you're reborn after death. Very interesting.

What downgrades, though?

And lol @ there won't be complaining. There wasn't even a downgrade and this thread is full of people whining about the graphics.

Console wars are the fucking worst, I swear.

I don't remember Second Son being downgraded.

Ive seen people talking about downgrade several times now, but none showed or even mentioned where is such thing.

Please, someone enlight us.

yeah, this is my sentiment as well. whatever shortcomings people see in this preview has been there all along. people are now coming out of the woodwork bitching about downgrades like FROM has shown some impeccably clean-looking game before.

With the exception of DC (which was an incredibly mild downgrade), nothing else was downgraded.

What are you talking about?
