Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

I'm trying Dolphin for the first time since I upgraded my PC last year and I'm not all that pleased with the results so far.

I have an FX-6300, HD 7950, and 8 GBs of RAM. I know that AMD systems don't perform as well as Intel and Nvidia's but I'm hoping I can squeeze better performance out of this thing, specifically Twilight Princess. I can get 30 FPS during certain scenes but then it randomly drops to 20 or less here and there, especially in bigger environments.

I changed EFB Copies to RAM, as suggested here, and that didn't help much. Direct3D seemed to give better performance than OpenGL but in order to get the game solidly playable I had to turn down the internal resolution to 1.5x native and AA and AF down to 4x or so.

Are you using the latest development build of Dolphin? Do you have the Hyrule Field Speed Hack enabled?

Same problem here, with Phenom II x4 955 CPU. Have the latest build (around the end of January) and field speed hack enabled.
Runs Xenoblade with high texture mod perfectly at 60 fps all around.
The Last Story runs poorly, as well.

Ohhhhh this is great. I love everything about this. This is the one tweak I wish more emulators could get going well. Gonna read now.
You can play Banjo Kazooie-Tooie @ 60fps in PJ64 with a combination of Action replay codes and counter factor "1" and you can also play Goldeneye/PD @ 60 fps if you use a modified version of 1964.

And yes, i agree with you. This sort of thing is amazing.

Edit: I followed the instruction and while the game runs at 60fps, the audio is too fast. Can this be fixed?

Stupid question here but how do I update to latest build without losing my previous settings/save file? As in, what files am I supposed to replace?

REmake has put me on a Resident Evil kick lately, so last night I tried playing some Darkside Chronicles in Dolphin. I bought it years ago because I loved coop Umbrella Chronicles, but remember giving up on it very quickly and couldn't remember exactly.

...now that's a game that would benefit from an increased framerate. I'm stunned they even thought it was a good idea to release a game that plays like this. Even a locked 30fps would be a godsend in its case.

Dolphin now keeps a folder in Documents for settings and stuff, so, afaik, all you have to do is place the new version anywhere and it should grab the settings/saves from there.

Make sure you are using the latest development build, turn off any enhancements you have applied, and try both graphics backends. If you still get performance issues then your CPU likely isn't powerful enough for fullspeed emulation.

You can just run the EXE of the latest development build and your settings and save files will still be there.

You should just be able to delete all the files inside your current Dolphin folder and replace them with everything inside your latest build download.

Stuff like config files and memory cards are normally stored separately in 'My Documents'.

Of course that only applies if you followed the standard install procedure when you first installed it.

Is it locked to 20 or something? If not, the game might benefit from using the Dolphin CPU Overclock feature to get smoother framerates for you.

I doubt a month difference of builds won't have that much impact on performance, but I'll give it another try later anyway. Other titles such as Tales of Symphonia, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade and Wind Waker run at fullspeed without problem, even at 2-3x upscaled resolution. My only problem is these 2 games, Twilight Princess and The Last Story. I guess the games are just too demanding for my system.

It's nothing big but I was working on a higher res HUD replacement for RFT and thought I'de share it. It's far from done but it should replace a good chunk of the text and HUD elements with higher res versions (4x the original resolution I left the character portraits untouched).

I am using the latest build but I didn't know the Speed Hack was a separate option. I thought the latest developmental builds had it built-in.

Nope. Go to Twilight Princess' properties window and in the patches tab there should be a checkbox to enable it.

So I've been on a zelda kick going through Wind Waker HD and kind of want to go through Twilight Princess after. I forgot that I even owned it. The non HD is kind of killing it for me though, it looks OK but I got it running on dolphin and it's way better. I need to buy a bluetooth adapter though. I don't think using my 360 controller is going to work too well.

Plus I'd like to try and get Galaxy running on it. That's got to look gorgeous.

Im having one issue. Custom textures are not loading and I have Load Custom textures on. Am I missing something? I used to play without issues with custom textures on previous builds so Im kinda scratching my head here.

You could try the Gamecube version, that'll match up well to 360 controls. You'll get camera controls as a bonus and you may be able to enable 16:9 support with a hack.

What build version were you on previously? If it was before 4.0, the location where the emulator looks for custom textures has changed.

Well I dumped the textures with the newest build of the emulator so I was thinking it would automatically load them by setting it. Where does it look for custom textures now?

I dont see any user folder on documents or the dolphin folder where the exe is. >.>

EDIT: GOT IT!

You should toss that on the games wiki page.

Most people won't randomly search or stumble upon it here on the forum, but most people will check the wiki when starting a game new and it would probably make sure plenty saw it.

Is playing wii games a lot easier with the wiimote or is it doable with the 360 gamepad?

I want to play with the wiimote but don't want to go through the hassle of buying a bluetooth dongle and a wireless sensor bar just to play some games.

I'm not confident enough in it as it stands to put it up on the wiki. There's still a lot to do and honestly I'de like to remake some of them at about double the resolution because it's still a little small for 1080p.

Depends on the game. A lot of games are perfectly playable with a 360&PS3/4 controller.

You're also free to post it on the Dolphin forums and I'll move it to the HD Texture forum for you once you have a download link to your wip (as per the requirements).

I haven't messed with Dolphin in a long time, but I'm getting the parts to upgrade my PC tomorrow. Anyone know what type of performance I can expect with an i7 4790k? My GPU is a 780 and that's not being upgraded atm. Also upgrading my MB, but I'm not sure if that matters that much.

My previous/current CPU is an i5 2500k and performance was hit or miss in the few games I have. Specifically Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword and Galaxy 2.

Anyone have a similar setup and available to offer some insight?

Thanks for the tip.

Would that help the framerate in other places in the game?

I'm not sure if it impacts other places in the game or just Hyrule field.

Depends on the game really. Some work just fine with a 360 controller while others are basically unplayable. It's mostly to do with how extensively the game uses motion controls (and MotionPlus for games that use it).

The i7-4790K is pretty much the single best CPU you can get for Dolphin right now. It should be fine.

The 2500K is still an excellent CPU if you have it overclocked and you should be able to run both Twilight Princess and Galaxy 2 at full speed with it (haven't played SS yet).
As for how much faster it is... I'd say its roughly 33% faster than a 2500K @ 4.5GHz.

Just Hyrule Field. It's the minimap rendering in Hyrule Field that's so demanding to be precise. The patch adds nops for the primitives (thus skipping them) in the specified address range which gets spammed a lot on Hyrule Field.

Or a 4690K.

Hmm... weird. I had so many issues with these games last I remember. Maybe I had a bad version of Dolphin or something? Anyhow thanks for the quick response.

Gotta fix the seems and mess around with SweetFx but I think the cutout filter helps hide some of the weak details on some of the models. About 1/3 of the game already has the effects and considering going all out since I can just process the effects on photoshop automatically just for the look.

Guys I have to ask (probably has been said a hundred times already, and I apologize in advance ;D), has there been widescreen fix for GC classics such as MP, MGS:TTS, TLoZ:WW... ?

I assume MP means Metroid prime. If so, the answer is yes, but I think only the Gamecube version?

Hi guys, first time on this topic and I'd really appreciate your help. I finally have a new pc and I'd like to play Xenoblade the best I can with this config:

Intel® Core™ I7 4790 3.60GHz
GeForce GTX 970 4GB GDDR5 256-Bit
Chipset B85
2x 8GB DDR3 1866MHz

Any tips will help, you see I'm not an expert on emulation.

With that rig you should be able to run it great.

You should be fine as that's close to my specs (though my i7 is OC'd to 4.4). You should be able to do 1080p easily, even with the HD texture pack. Just crank up the IR and AA until you start noticing more than a few stutters to find your high-end point.

my dkc360 config is crazy
dkc360mxih.jpg

I have Shake mapped to Y and Right Bumper
I have Down & Shake mapped to the B button (for blow)
Jump mapped to A and Left Bumper (for those levels where I want to roll forever)
X for Grab
D-Pad and Analog to handle movement

i don't really feel like uploading it

This works so damn well.

Do we have a thread for controller profiles or is there a website with good ones.

I've been playing Xenoblade with an i5 2500K OCed to 4.2 GHz and a GTX 680, and it's locked to 30 FPS all the time. I was getting some stuttering with the optional environment HD textures, though. I switched back to the core pack with the 360 buttons and it's been rock solid since.

My Wii U Gamecube adapter finally shipped so I am going to give dolphin a proper try now. How will my PC hold up, i7 2600K, 8gb Ram, 1gb 560ti. Hopefully dolphin isn't heavily gpu based...it is isn't it?

I have been experimenting a little with RE: Zero, specifically with "Disable Fog" option.
I haven't played RE: Zero original GC version, so what do you think, which one is better?

Or better yet, which one do you think is closer to the original?

I suppose with fog is the original, but to me without looks better IMO. Somehow black is really black.

Never heard of this game good shots though.

From Software's Action RPG with Cards. Both games are rather short but they are fun to play. 1st game runs at 60fps since they use random battles to keep the action at that and LK2 while improves some things it drops the framerate to 30 to have seamless battles and being able to escape encounters (Unless trapped on a room that is required to clean the area). I recommend the game.

Edit:

Why some games look terrible while others look amazing?

4:3 being stretched to widescreen?
Prerendered cutscenes?
IR set to 1x?
Also games that use the Real XFB are locked to 1x IR for emulation reasons.

Well Im running all games widescreen but I guess the XFB part explains everything.

EDIT: Working on most games. Neat.

i'm not sure if i'm doing something wrong but i think on metroid prime after a while the wiimote stops working well? like it got desync'd with the sensor bar or has low battery or something?

i don't think the battery can be it cos the batteries on both the wiimote and the bar are new so i really don't know what it is

it's super annoying

anyone had that happen?
