The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

And you make it sound like quality is consistent. He makes bad stuff, he makes good stuff. Hell, back in his second year I thought his year-opener - Nick-month, was terrible. And people are suddenly loving it when even now after rewatching it felt... ehh.

Well, yes. I personally think he was getting consistently less funny and the sketches just weren't doing it for me.

i disliked nickelodeon month because it seemed especially poorly research. he could have just been honest and talked about the shows he liked, but he clearly only watched the first episode of hey arnold that aired and then made a sweeping generalization that the show was a wacky kids show when it was basically the animated version of pete and pete, and even better in several ways.

You're giving me flashbacks to the 90s cartoon survivor thread.

There are shows that he does know but yeah when he looks up on shows he isn't familiar with, it feels sketchy. I guess that's why he stopped reviewing series or at least changed them to review the first episodes instead. I wish he did more of the latter though, I think his last one was Ducktales.

the nick special I loathed the least was SNICK.

And I think he varies from time to time even to now, so let's agree to disagree. Like for instance his scope in TLA couldn't be done in his old format.

I liked the ending, I don't mind the sketches though I'm not sure who are they aim at. They are not very funny.

At this point, I feel Doug does the sketches for himself.
He really wanted to do Demo Reel, and when that fell flat on its ass and was forced to return to the Nostalgia Critic, he *ahem* "compromised" by including way more sketches.

Channel Awesome in general does need a major management shift, especially with the drama from the last couple months

Though to be honest, I'm not too broken up about Phelous and Lupa leaving. I haven't watched their content in a long time, couldn't stand their "hur hur we're so random and meta hur hur" videos

I don't know about the drama as I just watch the Nostalgia Critic videos with the occasional Nostalgia Chick. I like Tamara, the black guy is ok, the older guy can be alright in moderation, the fat guy is really unfunny.

Still is alright, I like Nostalgia Critic the most so I enjoy the parts when he is talking about the movie the most

Which ones are these guys?

Am I the only one that thinks he lost his comedy touch when he brought back the NC?

I could go back and watch Captain N and then watch something recent and there is no way it touches Captain N.

the cinema snob and some guy with a hat. I don't know his name

It's Linkara

Really haven't been feeling their last few reviews. I haven't been following the NC long and I'm not familiar (nor do I give a shit) with this drama surrounding their production that everyone's talking about. I feel like their channel works better as middle-brow entertainment than actual reviews. Their skits drag on for a bit long most times and they're largely just targeting low hanging fruits based on obvious observations made about the film. I appreciate that goofiness occasionally but more often than not I find myself jumping forward past them to get to the rest of the review where they spend 80% of the runtime just summarizing the events of the film.

Honestly, I feel like they'd do much better if they just focused on their comedic material and skits rather than trying to meld them with a mediocre cliffnotes review.

Yes the one in the spoilers, really unfunny.

I disagree, I prefer the reviews over the skits. Especially when it's obscure ridiculous things.

As do I, when he's actually reviewing films and not summarizing them or mocking them is when he's at his best for me. Unfortunately, the actual review portions of his videos are ridiculously small to the point where I'm spending half the video jumping around to find them amid the long-winded skits.

Just not my cup of tea I guess.

Disneycember: By Popular Demand FINALLY up

Pom Poko
Into the Woods
The Tale of Princess Kaguya

I need to see Princess Kaguya one of these days, & I remember watching Pom Poko with a group of friends when we were watching a bunch of Miyazaki films (short version, we were BOOORREEEEDDD & felt it just dragged out. I can't remember JesuOtaku's exact review, but I recall she disliked it and I'd probably agree with her review if I could remember more of the details)

Catching up (because the RSS feed keeps breaking on me), I really liked the Matrix reviews. I may not agree with all of it (especially the first review) but this felt like classic NG. I feel like everyone forgets the skits in his earlier stuff (revisit the dinosaur movie where he pretends to be, poorly, Hunter S Thompson) or Congo (and the stupid sign language?) but this felt old and new at the same time. This is one of my favorite reviews in a while.

Also, I really hate that Lindsay not only barely produces stuff anymore, but is calling N Chick quits. She did great work and I always wanted her to do more and some specific things (I really wish she did more of the 90s/50s/60s movie remakes that occurred. It seemed apparent that in the last 15+ months she didn't have it in her that much. At least we have her earlier work.

Edit: Also, one of my favorite theatre moments is the end of the last Matrix movies where it ends on the park bench or sunset or something and someone in the theatre, days later (so it wasn't like an opening night thing) shouted "BULLSHIT". It was great.

Ah, "We're Back" that's the dinosaur movie I was thinking of.... Where's my Tall Tails review?1?1?

Lindsay has a better regular job now than just making funny reviews for the internet. She'll still do stuff but not as the Chick and not as often and they'll be on her own website instead.

I always thought most of the time Jerry was the asshole. Sure Tom had his moments, but at most he is just doing his job.

EDIT: I just noticed that the Fifth Element review of NChick isn't in the site. Weird.

Lindsay apparently hated that review, it had been removed from the old site for a while too.

So does that mean they're not going to do any more retarded anniversary specials any more?

They didn't do one last year, so it's likely they're done for a long time.
NC also did videos mocking Kickassia, Suburban Knights, and To Boldly Flee so the self-deprecation isn't new.

They haven't done those in years. Also, they weren't retarded. They were awesome. But they got bigger and bigger and took longer and longer to make so it's a good thing they stopped.

Maybe they'll do one if they make it to 10 years. Though no one who was there at the start will still be there. But if we're lucky we'll get our obligatory AVGN cameo!

(Seriously, Kickassia is my most favorite thing the site ever did. It was perfect. Doug as M. Bison and Lindsay as Sarah Palin were wonderful.)

I never heard of his Uncanny Valley shorts

They were the 2013 anniversary special. Done in this format because they didn't want to bring everyone together.
Only one of them was Doug's (the first one), the others were by Sci-Fi Guy, Brad Jones, MikeJ, and Welshy.
It was pretty inconsistent. I asked Brad Jones about it at a convention, and apparently all they told the producers was "Make a video about the internet".

I bet Doug & co. really want to get this right. His last ambitious project cost them in a big way and Channel Awesome is apparently falling apart. I haven't seen any of their material in a long, long time.

i've barely been following any of this for a long time. what was the last ambitious project?

They had an anniversary special in 2013? Huh no wonder I haven't heard of it.

I think he means To Boldly Flee in 2012.
Though NC has done some ambitious reviews since his revival. Like the Les Miserables review (a musical with a lot of contributors singing). He actually managed to get Dante Basco for the Top 11 Best Avatar: The Last Airbender episodes. So the ambition is still there, just placed in other aspects.

I imagine right now, the upper management is scrambling to fix their PR system after the major fallout from Lupa and Phelous.
