The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

Kickassia was by far the best of their anniversary film videos. It's technically really bad obviously but it's just a silly film shot in few days for fun. This is the kind of stuff me and my friends used to film all the time as kids.

Spoony hamming it up is priceless.

so, I know I'm the only one holding out that he reviews Tall Tales (in the early mode he reviewed 90s garbage) but what was that dinosaur movie in a mini golf course? I wish he went back to "nostalgia" movies and not popular stuff.

Eh, fantasy used to be not very respected.

yeah, but we're talking about a book whose sales are pretty much only exceeded by ones co-written by various gods (examples of highly respected fantasy, i might add, teehee).

basically, if the lord of the rings was not a household name, what book was?

Not sure about local US books, since I didn't grew up there, but generally Faust, Tom Sawyer, To Kill a Mockingbird, books like these would be household names. Imo.

kind of weird to say that the lord of the rings wasn't a household name before the movies. books don't get much more famous than that.
Well technically speaking LotR are only within certain circles, and most of the household names are usually lit studied in schools.

And I dunno, I still think Frozen is mediocre in repeated viewings.

New vlog series, Real Thoughts on Nostalgia Critic Reviews. Where Doug and Rob give their actual out-of-character thoughts on a recently featured movie.

First one is The Matrix

Sounds a little bit like damage control considering the backlash to it. Though they do say they're going to do Mamma Mia next time so... *shrugs*

I thought that was what Sibling Rivalry was for? Or I guess that one was just for recent movies instead of older ones. Still, seems like they could merge them into one series.

Nah Sibling Rivalry was for Doug and Rob talk about what they think about a movie particularly because they have different opinions on it.

With that said I thought he has been doing this (as in his comments) via separate vlogs?

Damage control? There are way bigger reviews that got bigger backlash. They still bashed a lot of things in the movies in this.

Oh wow, I haven't really spent any time on TGWTG for months. I come back to finally see a new site design, devolution, and a farewell to quite a few people. Its nice to see Brad and Linkara are still around although I really haven't followed their stuff closely for a while. I kind of float in and out the site for months on end only to catch up in long video watch binges.

I really want Doug to succeed but it seems like the more the site tries to do, the less it changes. I was really hoping for a proper site redo even if it were bare bones. It feels like I'm still looking at a website from 2006.

I'm excited to see the matrix stuff despite its shortcomings. I've got a lot of catching up to do.

Who would be the best person to start with if I wanted to watch other Channel Awesome? I've watched every NC video and the majority of Brad Jones video.

Is there any specific person that I should jump to next or should I just randomly pick someone?

I love Todd in the Shadows. And I don't even like todays pop music. I held off watching his Call Me Maybe video for a year because I didn't want to spoil the song for when it inevitably snuck up on me. And it did last January, like more than a year after it became popular.

Todd and Brad are the only two on the site I still watch from time to time. Big Todd fan, though. Hell, I made a thread about his videos back when he was still on Youtube and it got like two replies. :lol

I just want to start branching out. I came to the realization that I've seen the majority of NC's reviews 5-6 times.

Right now I'm chained to 7 channels that have been on repeat for years. I figured its about time I picked up the remote. Theres got to be more stuff of quality out there.

What are you looking for? Serious review or entertainment? Only movies or is any topic fine?

Could I just say how terrible the "Channel Awesome" website has become. I guess they just accept everyone who reviews anything now. Is anyone seriously clamoring for a guy who reviews theme parks?

The theme park guy (Some Jerk with a Camera) is actually one of the better pickups. There's some other good ones (Count Jackula, iRawss, Brandon Tenold), but most of the new guys are... crap.

EDIT: Forgot SFDebris, but he's on a different level. Rantasmo is good too.

If you stick to Channel Awesome for reviewers, I would highly recommend SFDebris. He's been doing it for years, but was only picked up recently to have his show linked on Channel Awesome's website.

Entertainment in line with NC/AVGN/YMS, Any topic is fine.
Angry Joe's Angry Reviews are not only very informative, but also entertaining. He has little sketches in them that parodies the game he is reviewing, no meta plot or something, it's all about the review.
Spoony is very fun, although his topics are very different from each other and his work ethic is questionable at times. I would recommend the Ultima Retrospective (Spoony loves this series and this makes him taking the games apart pretty cool, because he isn't just hating for the sake of hating), the Final Fantasy reviews (begin with X, VIII is in my opinion not a good review, very funny how he presents the games) and my absolute favorite of Spoony: Counter Money. Counter Monkey are tales, anecdotes and tips around tabletop gaming. Watch Thieves' World (amazing story that the players created for themselves by playing), Age of Manure (interesting thoughts of a kid) and Shadowrun: The Code (Funny story about the dumbest future heist of all times).

I thought he was affiliated for as old as around two years ago when NC did Star Trek reviews?

Is it me, or does Doug's Mamma Mia review just felt like he was just dumping on "chick flicks" and people who enjoy then?

I thought he did a great job at the start of the review pointing out how there are "chick flicks" (movies targeted towards women) just as there are "dick flicks" (movies targeted towards men), but in spite of "target audience" men can enjoy chick flicks and women can enjoy dick flicks, so long as the movie is good, and then he listed a bunch of great chick flicks.

Then he said what pisses him off is when movies are bad but some people give them a pass because "it's a chick flick", so it doesn't need to be good. That's insulting to both women and film.

Then he called out Mamma Mia as the worst offender in the category of bad chick flicks, and spent half an hour complaining about things that Mamma Mia (specifically) did wrong, not complaining about things that are inherent to chick flicks.

I definitely don't agree, it's bad movie and frankly too many of them get a pass simply because their "chick films". If a chick did the review would you feel different? Not implying anything but I do believe a dude negatively reviewing this film would be hit harder then a woman even if their options are completly the same, simply because he may be shrugged off as a guy hating on chick flicks. I thought he presented his options very well.

Well he did point out stuff that bad chick flicks inherently do.
