The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

Yup, the schedule at the moment is suppose to be (I guess spoilers if anyone still wants the surprise from yesterday's review):

Jan. 6th: The Matrix
Jan 13th: The Animatrix
Jan 20th: Matrix Reloaded
Jan 27th: Matrix Revolutions

Seems like her work really affected her output it seems. But I wish her luck.

I think this part was key.
Lindsay Ellis said:
To answer the inevitable “why”, though, is simply that it’s time to move on. Honestly that time was a long time ago; I just wasn’t willing to let go of the crutch the site had become for me.
I made my full living off of online video from about 2011-2013, when I just got kind of burned out on it. Honestly I found it less stressful to do it for the love of the game than for money, but found also when I did, I just didn’t feel incentivized to be “Nostalgia Chick” anymore.
Got tired of being NC for money -> Decided to get a real job for money -> Decided to keep doing NC for fun -> Hardly got around to doing NC for fun -> Realized that doing NC is not really her definition of "fun" (or maybe there are other things in life she enjoys more), that was just her way of quitting without making a clean break of it.

The job didn't affect her output, the burnout made her find a new job.

Lindsay's reviews were so grounded, I liked her stuff a lot more than Doug's. She's not just bashing stuff for laughs, and gave things a more critical look (more like RLM). I think my favorite reviews of hers were the Lord of the Rings reviews.

And the Labyrinth review still makes me laugh non-stop.

I'll miss her videos a great deal. She also remains one of the cutest girls on the internet in my opinion, and flat out the cutest to me out of all of those online that does videos like hers.

At least this isn't out of the blue though. I've already pretty much gotten used to her no longer really releasing videos. Although I still, up to this point, check her listing to see it just in case every single week. I'll sure miss the "Nostalgia Chick" persona, that's for sure. At least we will still see her from now and then.

So apparently Channel Awesome/TGWTG is falling apart. Phalous just left too and everyone's coming out of the woodwork on Twitter to talk about how their experiences have been. JesuOtaku is probably the most outspoken of them all though. Lindsay's calling it a "Mass exodus". lol

Have there been any explanations or detailed posts why? I don't follow any of them on twitter, but I tried to skim through some of them and didn't find anything specific.

That might explain why some of Phelous' videos tend to take a while to appear on TGWTG/Channel Awesome compared to when I check his blip.tv page. Though I haven't heard anything from him about leaving the site.

Edit: So Phelous JUST posted this between 20 to 40 minutes ago that he's no longer posting videos to Channel Awesome. He'll have a more detailed post, but he's "not really been happy there for a while." & "it's just time to move on"

SO basically LordKat was right.

Yeah I noticed even with the new channel there was a lot of fallout.
Spoony was gone, and then it just continued from there.
Still like NCs stuff but I could tell keeping it all together was beginning to be too much.

Nothing specific. Just the same vague "terrible place to work" stuff. Phalous is talking about how funny it is that he was there 6 years and he was "taken off the site instantly" implying that there were problems with getting videos up in time in the past and there were hints at a grueling schedule you had to keep. Jesu was joining in because I think she left a while ago for the same reasons.

Havent seen Todd in a while. I think he's dating Lindsay? So that may be in connection.
Todd is still there. He last uploaded a video on December 24th. I don't think they've broken up or anything. I can tell from both their Twitters. If he ends up leaving too then we'll know something's up.

Mike J was making some jokes. He was as surprised as Lindsay was. I think Lindsay actually left normally. This just happened to coincide with the same timeframe. Mike J is still there though. So far it's just Phalous. No word from Lupa. (Who I believe is still dating Phalous.)

Phalous still has his own site though so it's not a problem for his fans. Lindsay has her own too.

I don't know if we'll really get the whole story. TGWTG seems to thrive on drama. Remember the Spoony incident a few years ago? Their stuff makes the GameGrumps split seem like children arguing on the playground.

Edit:

What did he say? I follow pretty much everyone from that site. Never really knew why, but now it seems like a great idea in retrospect. You get to see the whole conversation play out when you follow everyone.

I wonder if this would explain why it feels like when they made the new CA site, there was a bunch of new people while the older members like Phelous & such weren't contributing as much. I pretty much just check their individual sites or blip.tv accounts now.

Yeah I noticed that as well.
The new site was showcasing a lot of the new guys but not the older ones.

Nothing on this incident but the is quite candid in his opinions that the brain trust at CA do not know what they are doing.

I mostly watch MikeJ and Todd, but that's pretty weird what really going on. I'm seeing a bunch of new faces, which is good but most of them have youtube channels. New site is shit

Channel Awesome in general feels like a relic of another age since every single contributer either has a Youtube page or has created their own site.

I've watched Nostalgia Chick once and wondered why she was reviewing stuff she wouldnt have nostalgia for as she is to young to have enjoyed (like 80s cartoon). Her stuff was more "Young person reviewing old stuff by todays standards."

They certainly don't know how to create a good website.
Agreed. I've complained numerous times about how archaic and outdated the old site felt. The new one doesn't seem much better. Just rip off YouTube's layout for goodness sakes.

She started out reviewing "girly things". But soon realized she didn't have any nostalgia for anything girly. Like at all. So she recreated herself as more of a structured well thought out version of the Critic. Whereas he was the angry geek, she was much more clear with how she reviewed stuff. I like both of them but I always really looked forward to her stuff. Actually she goes into that on her blog post.

She also has nothing nostalgic for the the nostalgia stuff she reviews. Like Jem and the Holograms (the first one I watched). She's simply watching old stuff and giving her opinion on it. That's not nostalgia. Dont get me wrong she seems cool but shes not being nostalgic like the male version is. He's Disney Afternoon one was great and he displayed actual nostalgia.

For those wondering about Todd, he recently had a death in the family and had to fly out of town for the funeral. He's admitted it has put a hamper on with work progress getting his Top 10 videos out but that he is working on them. There's also the added bonus that he says Top 10 videos are generally the hardest to work on and edit.

Well yeah, she hasn't really been a "nostalgia chick" for a while. She was just another reviewer with really good ways of putting words. I wish words could be put from my mouth half as good as hers.

I thought CA was just a place where (more popular) video makers could gather and get their stuff posted. I wonder why anyone would be unhappy if (as I understand it) CA doesn't really control any aspect of the various channels.

I was wondering what happened with Phelous. I would say it sucks that he's not part of Channel Awesome anymore, but I don't really go to CA to find videos. I just check their blips.

I wonder if Brad's going to be leaving soon.

She actually is an 80s kid (1984). Her big thing, nostalgia-wise, is G1 Transformers. I'm not sure how old you think she is, but she ain't really young (Doug is 3 years older than her).

But yes, her 'nostalgia' episodes were not really for things she was actually nostalgic about.

She would have been 2 when Transformers the Movie came out. After that it was all new Transformers and the decline of the series. Let's say around 5 years old she started watching Transformers G1 it would have been pretty much after the fact.

She's a 90s kid, being born in the mid- 80s doesn't give you much nostalgia for 80s stuff.

I can remember rushing home from school to watch GI Joe and Transformers. I recall the introduction of the Dinobots. I remember having battles with my Transformers and Go-Bot toys. I remember seeing the movies in my local theater. (OMG Primes death, the tears).

And like I said I don't want to criticize her work, her videos are entertaining, but she might be better served by reviewing 90s stuff on up.

It's actually kind of sad now that I think about it, Kids today don't really get those experiences anymore. Saturday morning cartoons etc. Everything served up per season on Hulu and Netflix. There is something more to it then just watching 10 episodes in a row on your PC.

I guess that's kind of what made the 80s (and to a lesser extent the 90s) special, everything wasn't served to you instantly like they are now.

Meh just rambling now, anywho. She's a good reviewer but I think her "brand" is hurt by calling herself "nostalgia", but probably to late to change the name etc.

Guys, I'm more of an '80s kid than either of them, or possibly most of the people on the site. I'm 35 and was born right before they started. So the only stuff I wouldn't have remembered at all would be stuff from the first 3 years when the '80s were still part of the '70s culture-wise. If anyone should be the Nostalgia Critic it's me. But I'm not and don't want to be because he still remembers a lot of stuff I don't. So I don't have to.

Also, from what I can tell, CA/TGWTG isn't just a place for reviewers to put their videos. It's a business. And they had schedules. If you didn't post enough, you weren't supposed to be there. Phalous was talking about grueling schedules he had to keep because they needed content. And Lindsay had to leave because she just didn't have it in her to keep up with it. I'm sure there's more to it than just another YouTube for reviewers without the same copyright restrictions. If you are there, you are working.

I don't know if Doug is really a terrible person or someone else is the puppet master but I really hope I don't have to hate him. No one who leaves the site ever says he's to blame though. At least not by name. I'd hate to have to not watch his stuff.

Damn it Doug, it's Carrie-Anne Moss. I imagine he'll bring that up next week since everyone in the comments will point it out.

I still like the movie, but it's flawed. Not to mention the sequels ruined it.

Doug misses the actual big plothole of the movie, not why the Matrix is needed but how and why humanity is kept as living batteries in the first place.

I think Doug has said in the past that he can get obsessive about work and demand that his employees do a job over again if he thinks they can do better, when they think they did it perfectly the first time, and that he can get into heated arguments with them, and sometimes he's wrong and sometimes he's not, but at the end of the day, they all realize that this is just a "work thing" and they're all cool with each other, and he respects everyone he works with, saying they're all professionals who generally do great work and occasionally go above and beyond. And from his perspective, he wants to be (and thinks he is) friends with everyone he works with. I don't know Doug as a person, but I expect that this is probably true. He can be a dick sometimes and he knows it, but he doesn't want to be a dick, and doesn't think he's really been that bad, has he?

Channel Awesome has a management structure, which I think is important to consider (although I admit I'm not an expert, I don't normally follow this, I just googled it).

Mike Ellis, Bhargav Dronamraju, and Mike Michaud initially approached Doug Walker with an offer to solve his Youtube problems, and make their own Youtube alternative, and gather talent under their banner.

Mike Ellis initially ran everything, Bhargav Dronamraju was in charge of talent, and Mike Michaud was the webmaster. Doug is the first customer, and superstar celebrity endorsement. Then Ellis was fired (?), Dronamraju quit (?), and Michaud took over running the company. Rob Walker stepped in as the guy in charge of talent. Doug's role with the company is unclear, because the best thing he can do is keep on being an artist, but the company can't survive without him, so he has massive power over them and could abuse that in any way he wanted.

Phelous just posted an explanation of why he left.
http://phelous.tumblr.com/post/108013883721/goodbye-farewell-and-amen-ca

He says (among other things) that Channel Awesome wants everyone to be Doug's minimum wage employees. He seems to say that he didn't mind working for Doug, but then CA started dicking him around over money, and the normally-upfront Doug started acting sneaky and manipulative (complimenting him insincerely while asking a third party to push him for a do-over).

He says that Michaud is a dick who is often unresponsive for days, but fires people for being out-of-contact for fifteen minutes. And Michaud fired CA's head of HR in late 2013, someone who was great at smoothing over issues with the lower ranks. And he says that when he quit, Rob Walker was cool about it, but Michaud got petty and pulled his videos from the site immediately.

Sounds like Channel Awesome needs a serious re-working in management.
They can't hide it like they used to with Lupa and Phelous saying the same things. It's a PR nightmare.
Hiring a new PR manager will likely fix a lot of shit.

I suppose if there is an upside to this mas exodus is the fact that with so much of the upper echelon now gone, new talent will have a chance to shine though. Let us not forget that a hundred thousand people post vids to that place.
