PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Does anyone know of a list of games that support the multitap?

Crash Team Racing and Crash Bash support it. Basically, any multiplayer game that supports more than two players will support multitap.

Thankfully there's a few games that are fun in just co-op. Crash Bash's Adventure Mode, Ratchet Deadlocked Campaign, and also this one obscure PS1 game called Assault Retribution.

Hello PS2 appreciation thread! I have a rather important question I would like to ask of you all. I have a collection of PS2 games that I've owned since release and what-not right, but lately I have been wanting to expand my collection more and more. I feel like I will start looking at various stores online and off for PS2 games.

So the question is this; Amazon sells PS2 games and in some cases will sell games that they categorize as "New". Are these games actually brand spanking new, Y-Fold, security sticker and all? If so I feel like I will be scouring Amazon to add more to the collection, but if not I'd assume it isn't worth buying from them, correct?

in my experience, "new" doesn't necessarily mean factory sealed from an amazon seller. However, I if they haven't done so, I usually ask if they could provide me a photo of what they're selling. About 90% of the time they've been nice enough to accommodate my request.

I think you misunderstood me, not from an Amazon seller, but quite literally, Amazon. An Amazon seller is like an eBay seller, but using Amazon as the output for their product right?

This is what it may say "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com. Gift-wrap available."

Oh, then chances are that if its being sold by amazon, then it's factory-sealed.

welll.. it might be resealed in order to add some extras (french packaging or whatnot), but they usually reseal it on top of the factory seal.. that's been my experience anyways.

At least you're not buying it "new" from gamestop/ebgames! lol

Agreed on the last comment, I'd have to personally witness "new" games from GameStop or EB Games.

I do hope others can chime in about my question, I really will/do appreciate it.

I buy a lot of stuff on Amazon and every PS2 game I have bought that says "Ships and Sold by Amazon" has been brand new and factory sealed in the shrink wrap.

I think I can help. I got Sly 1 + 3 from Amazon recently and they were sealed. No idea if it was factory sealed or what, but they looked new to me.

Thank you so much Ravager61 and maxcriden, that's exactly what I was looking for, first hand experience.

Really, thanks.

Just to reiterate: yeah, if it's sold by and ships from Amazon.com and is sold as new, it is factory-sealed new. I just bought the Atelier Iris trilogy from Amazon last week brand new. Also, items that are sold by a secondary seller but are fulfilled by Amazon are also new. (These usually have paper bar code stickers on them that I don't normally get on Amazon.com items, if you're worried about that.) Anything else is completely third-party and would be questionable, but if you go to the buying choices page (E.G. click on the "15 new from $19.99" link), you can usually find sellers that indicate if it's factory-sealed in the condition description.

The used items from Amazon are sold under the Amazon Warehouse Deals moniker, and are marked as used, even if they're new but opened.

Is Mr. Mosquito a fun game?

I'm trying to see what games from my PS2 wish list can be cut... I'm wondering if this is one of them. Am I interested in it just because it's quirky? Or should I be interested because it's a game that will really engross me like a Katamari?

Nice collection, don't know why but I prefer the PAL spines, to me they look much nicer in a big collection like that. :P

So, unfortunately, the Disc Replay I've been working at for the past few months is closing and moving shop up to Indy. I'm pretty bummed but it's mainly because I'll be stuck looking for games at Half Price Books and Game King. Ugh. So in memory of the store, here are some of the great PS2 finds I've gotten over the past month or so. I'm really happy that I have most of the big PS2 games out of the way now (except Futurama and a few others -- gah!!!), but Disc Replay really helped me out by selling them for cheap.

I figured this might be the best place to ask. Is there a way to play games from other regions without a mod chip?

I have freemcboot on my ps2 and am looking to not use my disc drive so any kinda swapping is the last step. I backed up my games to my HDD and play them from there

You say you have FMCB? Do you have an HDD installed on your PS2 and play games from it?

yesterday I finally got my SCPH-90000

unfortunately all my 70 PS2 jpn games are still in Italy but I bought some to start enjoying the good old times

Rez (60fps amazing)

Automodellista, I game I always wanted to play

gorgeous white ps2. I had the satin silver one years back and I always loved the way white and silver ps2s look. Is that a Japanese import 9000?

not properly import cause I live in Tokyo since 2013 :)

but I think I had a great deal, 1,000yen cheaper than other 90000 I saw in many Boo-Off, including the original box and the controller (seems normal but a lot of shops sold them separarely to maximise profit)
and neither scratches nor stains, which is very important on a white model

now I just need two memory cards (PS1 and PS2) and a proper output cable, A/V sucks :P

Any luck finding a matching white memory card? I think they're kinda scarce but I lucked out with one for my white scph-70000

ahahahah, no no, today I went a little outside Tokyo in a shop I usually go and I noticed they were cheap (around 50%) so I bought a black one for PS2 (cause white and black reminds me my favourite soccer team) and a green one for PS1 (reminds nothing, it was the only colour I liked)
I'd liked to match colours between console and memory card, but actually I don't have so much money so I preferred to buy one and I can start playing game seriously, maybe in the future I will lool for a white one :)

ah I also bought a Simple Series Ultimate, a racing game called Saisoku! Zokusha King, which was also released in Europe as MaXXed Out Racing
it's a crap game I know, but I like both racing and Simple Series games :D

So back up with Open?

Can I use it on the same partition? I just put the game in an rip it?

I just rip them to my PC, transfer them to the PS2 like any other game over FTP, and them use OPL to play them. I'm not sure if you can rip them from the PS2 itself if it's a disc from another region.

I was able to get through FFXII IZJS and the Rurouni Kenshin game with no problems.

Awesome. Well I'll try it out and see if it works. Hoping to pick up a cheap import to try it out.

I have a question for you folks:

I never owned a PS2. My brother did, but I was the Xbox guy. I didn't have anything against the PS2, it's just how it worked out. He broke his PS2, but we still have the games left over. I'm tempted to take them off his hands. I could emulate them, my PC could handle it, but part of me wants to own a PS2 and play the games despite it not looking as good and being more expensive.

What do you think?

Do you have a CRT TV? Most PS2 games don't look great on an HDTV.

Automodellista

How would you compare it to GT3/GT4? It always intrigued me but I never got around to playing it.

Back in the day I got to beta test Automodellista along with a couple other games. It was really cool for 18-19 year old me, to get disks of early versions of games in the mail MONTHS before they were officially released. I always liked the game a lot, had a very unique visual style for a racing game, although it seemed like every other game was cel-shaded at the time haha

I've run into too many problems with PCSX2 to make it worthwhile. Graphical glitches, missing effects, many games that don't display correctly unless ran in software mode, random slowdown from data access, random program crashes for no reason. I just said fuck it and went back to playing PS2 games on my PS3.

Do you have Gitarooman? Because you should have Gitarooman.

I just tried it for 30 min around, I didn't have the memory card yet so I just wanted to take a look

Honestly I played GT4 around 10 years ago so I don't know if I can make a comparison

Anyway for what I saw the game seems interesting, I just played 2 tracks in Shinjuku, I have to try more drifting tracks; the feeling is more arcade than simulation, in certain situations I felt playing a classic SEGA racing game (for example the comment about what are doing during the race)
If you hit some wall you bump and seems a little unrealistic, of course the tuning section is where the game shines, so I will focus on it as soon as I start to play it seriously

My first impression was good, I like cel-shading, tracks seems like to not be so much but regarding card there are a lot of brands and unlockable vehicles.

But to answer your question I think that Automodellista and GT are different games with different driving approach and different target

^ Cool, thanks. After I posted I realized they aren't really the same, simcade for GT and more arcade for AM. I may have to check it out at some point. It looks like it is wheel compatible too!

I agree that PS2 emulation is far from being perfect. Most bugs can be solved by using software mode though. While this means the games are rendered at native PS2 resolution, it's still a bit better than connecting an actual PS2 to your LCD TV/monitor. Using a PS2 on a CRT TV is the best solution though, imo.

yes, I can confirm that

Definitively a game to give it a try, especially now that you can find very cheaper (or so I suppose)
Also the US version was slighty different from the original japanese one, in fact it was released again ad "US tuned" or something similar, and that's the version which XB and GC got, I read somewhere about it

Only games that I have tried on PCSX2 that worked great was FFXII (still slowdown in towns) and Persona 3,4 (only played the intro)
Tried Black and it will not display correctly even in software
And thats with a Phenom2x4 955 3.2GHZ

Get a real PS2. Im so close to re-buying one but my monitor is only HDMI or VGA

AMD processors are absolute GASH for PCSX2 to be fair, but I agree that PCSX2 is quite iffy with a lot of games, unfortunately it's the best PS2 emulator we've got.

For compatibility purposes I'd prefer PS2 over PCSX2. Make sure you have a component cable and it doesn't look TOO bad on an LCD TV. Erasus you could probably get a component to hdmi converter.

Man getting into the .Hack series is expensive. It starts out ok, but then BAM part 4 is like 100+ dollars already?

I guess the GU series is sorta better since each are about as much as an on sale retail game these days.

Wow, I had no idea that it had gotten that high.

Yeah, this is probably the most expensive series on the PS2. There are a few outlying single games that are super expensive (rule of roses or w.e that atlus horror game is, etc.) but I can't think of a single series as consistently expensive as the .Hack franchise. Big bummer since I, too, want a full set.
