Kid share plays Destiny to stranger...

We must have crossed wires here because I have no idea what you mean. My paedophile analogy was specifically in response to n0razi's post which said it's the mother's fault and also posts in general blaming the kid, rather than blaming the 38 year old man who deceived the child and deleted his characters.

I've not even argued that Bungie are to blame either, which is what your analogy suggests I'm doing. Your analogy, taking out the end bit which I haven't touched upon, has the same outcome as mine... so I guess we agree?

Most of the ending bit was generally for the thread discussion as a whole. I guess I jumped in a little late and your pedophile comparison doesn't leave much wiggle room for a proper discussion of what happened. No one would try and argue that being sexually preyed upon is a valuable life lesson and it's damaging to an otherwise healthy discussion.

I don't know, this prank, gamergate, the comments on this and other forums of "LOL" and "he deserves it" make me seriously question the modern gamer crowd. Maybe it's just typical teenager ignorance, 20-something selfishness, or maybe it's just a broader picture of humanity but that someone would do this to a child and you trolls would laugh or laud it, makes me immensely sad.

I am not condoning what the guy did, but I don't say what I do out of selfishness or ignorance. In the game of life there are much more serious consequences than having some virtual items deleted from a game. The kid can get those items back. The guy should definitely be punished for what he did, but it's ignorant to ignore that the kid is partially to blame here. It really is of no consequence how young he is.

After checking into the players involved, I'm honestly not sure who I should feel worse for in this situation:

The 11-year old kid who got his characters deleted by a 38-year old man.
or
The 38-year old man who has logged well over 500 hours into this game across his 3 characters.
He had done this horrible sh!tty act to others. Banned this sadist for life I said.

What's wrong with 500 hours since September exactly?
You're really going to call out how much time he plays video games on a video game forum?
Maybe it's odd to shame him for it on a forum full of hardcore gamers (I play plenty), but isn't 500 hours usually a pretty huge amount for any one game? With him having a history of trolling kids like this, along with his reddit history, I just can't imagine him living anything other than a pathetic life. I would love to see him get his 500+ hours of progress wiped.

I can just imagine the 'lesson learned' crowd seeing their five year-old kid falling over in the street and them dragging them back up screaming "Lesson learned, gravity bitch!!".

When my 2 year old hurts himself, you're damn right I use it as a lesson. I first go and make sure he's okay, giving him a hug and what not. Then I tell him he shouldn't do that if he doesn't want to get hurt like that again. I don't see what's so hard about that.

I have 218 hours in BF4, and I don't even play that much.

Not Destiny, haha. I had a bit over 100 hours and I played for about two months before I sold it...and I didn't play nearly as much as some gaffers. I think some people had 3-400 hours in that same span of time. It's a game that requires and rewards grinding.

Why not both?

The adult probably should be removed from the game.

Helping the kid get his characters back would be a nice thing to do, however it also has potential to set a bad precedence that a person doesn't need to be careful with their accounts because Bungie will be there to save the day.

But I wasn't arguing that. I was specifically talking about n0razi blaming the kid's Mother rather than Kirmit, not the merits of the experience as a whole. If I was making the latter point then I could see your point.

I agree. I think there is a large difference here though. If your child made a mistake or fell that is one thing. If you tricked your child into doing something then that is a bit different.

He should have his entire PSN account banned.

Fair enough, Bungie is already putting in a way to restore stuff in the first place.

Depends on why he logged those 500 hours. I don't know anything about the guy, but maybe he does let's plays or is paid well to produce Youtube videos. Perhaps that is what he does for a living. That doesn't make his life pathetic, maybe that's just what he enjoys doing. One man's paradise is another's living hell.

I don't feel sorry for this kid. You don't play x dozen hours of a game just to get a load of loot, not really, you do it because it's fun. He lost the loot but he didn't lose all the fun he had. The joy is in the journey and that's the real lesson he should learn from this.

Not really.

Some games can be played for extended periods, others not. Depends on your preferences. I can't imagine someone putting 1000 in Journey for example but competitive multiplayer games or MMOs, yup.

Trust me, it's not a 20 something thing, this is the current day and age. As a matter a fact, there was a social forum I used to go to frequently and one guy told a personal story about how he was driving down the highway and noticed a car kind of swerving strangely. It turned out to be an in-car struggle with one guy being thrown out of the car. The guy telling the story pulled over got out of his car and helped the guy get to safety. During all of this cars were steadily passing by honking and yelling at them, not anyone else stopping to find out what was going on. He said it was a wake up call to him on how humanity really looks as a whole.

Most things in life have some value as a lesson. I'm talking specifically about the smug, callous drive-by posts like these:

"I thought it was pretty funny and like others said, it's another lesson learned for the kid."

"it would seem that a lesson was learned"

"The kid definitely learned his lesson today. No honor amongst cheaters. Grind that shit out yourself."

I probably wasn't clear enough on my targets in the original post I made.

Did this maybe have something to do with this taking place in a highway?

MMO playtime really should be measured in days not hours. 500 days isn't uncommon for an MMO and destiny has a similar enough compulsion loop and quest style that it qualifies

I suppose it does vary. I put 100 hours into Destiny since it launched and I felt like I was addicted; I just can't imagine 500, personally.

Have you played Destiny? The loot is literally the key to progressing in the endgame. You can't level up (which is the key to accessing new areas/modes) without loot.

Define rectify. Rectify as in ban the adult? Or rectify as in help the kid get his characters back?

Both probably.

But certainly the latter.

That kid should not be swindled out of his characters like that.

Sure, he may have been doing something would deem as inappropriate, but hes just a kid.

It isn't Bungie that should be doing anything, it's Sony. What the 38 year old adult (and I use that loosely) did was against the terms of service/coc.

This. It's sony's shareplay system that was abused. If Sony wants people to think shareplay is a good thing and something to want, they need to not let it get a reputation that you can't trust people and not to use it. Sony should realize it is in their best interest to at least ban this guy since he's getting so much bad pr for their system that is special to their console. Even if they aren't going to make a habit of banning people for abusing the system to troll people (Though I wouldn't complain).

Nope I haven't played it. But you're not telling me you spend 100s of hours in the game just to unlock new areas. You do it because it's fun to do. The unlocks are just the carrot that gets you moving.

Uh, considering you haven't played it...

Destiny is a lot like D3, you play it for the loot and to see you character getting 'stronger'. The base game doesn't change. Losing a Paragon 500 character in D3 would be crushing, same is true for Destiny.

Sounds like it was collusion between KirmitTHEfrog and AztecStrikerS13. He's on Reddit with the name BuzzGoku claiming responsibility too

Never thought this would get to Reddit but I have to defend myself The kid was unbearably annoying. I don't know how he got our IDs but he was spamming me and my friend with messages asking for glitches and shit. I got pissed off and decided to to mess with him a bit. I don't really feel regret for deleting them. It's just video games.

Well no you probably wouldn't immediately but you might eventually and it's a good thing to learn. The sooner you learn that, the more contented and happy you will be IMVHO. Good day to you.

He's a lying piece of shit. How does he explain that this is not the first time he's done it? (there's one other documented incident with him, there could be others we don't know about)

Couldn't he...I don't know, block him or something?...

Bungie should delete his account, it's just videogames, right?

So true.

I had 150 hours in Destiny before I just stopped, and I guarantee I could still go back and spend another 50 hours grinding for weapons and stuff if I wanted too. ( I don't)

Yeah, and then he's on the Bungie forums claiming he had nothing to do with it. Fucking slug.

For what its worth I flagged this thread earlier today.

For Sony? Can they do anything about this though? Seems to be a natural risk with SharePlay. An unfortunate inborn problem with a cool mechanic. Oh wait, you mean to ban the guy who did this, right?

Also, Bungie can ban the guy, right?

Did he break a terms of use for Bungie or Sony by doing something malicious like this? Would be great if he did so he could have his account banned.

as someone who hit 1000 hours in Destiny(feel free to judge me), i see this and give no shits. It could be any game and id feel the same way tho. When youre putting your account in the hands of others to glitch your way up for whatever reason, youre open to these kinds of attacks. are they right? no. are they justified? not at all. but its a risk and the kid took a loss that i can only hope will shape how he chooses to play games in the future.
