Just got to listening to this while grinding some Hearthstone... currently on track 3 and daaammmnnn. This album is fire so far.

Edit: Finished. Fav jam so far: How Much A Dollar Cost

Although it's probably better this way, it is weird to hear a TDE release without any TDE features.

I'm pretty sure this is the first CD of any kind from them that had no features from within the camp since Black Hippy came together.

Or Jhene Aiko or BJ The Chicago Kid for that matter.

This shit is amazing.

Kendrick hits an inside the park grand slam. Takes me back to Death Row by way of Outkast with crunchy vibes all the way through.

With back to back Bilal features, I thought this album would be a tough listen. But this is quality sleepy shit. This is the shit Common has been trying to make for two decades.

You do have the dig for the gems tho. Track 4 has the best Snoop verses since the 90s. God damn Kendrick. God damn.

I do like it HipHopGAF but, but, I would have preferred that this was album 3, or rather album 4. I do understand however, the times and the need to make something like this. There isn't a single radio hitter in any of these, which isn't a bad thing but, I want him to be able to make more music and I feel like, using Kanye's first 3 albums (as an example) which are classics, did he delve into darker more personal(mother) territory but, at that point he was pretty much solidified and was able to do whatever he wanted. Then again the tone of a lot of his albums were similar and maybe I'm expecting a Kendrick that simply never existed.

yeah I agree. I tried hard to get into cole but he is just missing something for me. lord knows I love to rep stuff from my home state but I just can't with him.

I agree, I do support the kid and buy whatever I can but, I want more from him that he isn't delivering for me personally. I think when his rhymes start sounding like he doesn't care anymore will he get out of this funk.

All this bitching about Cole I agree with.
I'm bored with his albums because he has been doing the same sound and flow on every one, he nailed it with the mix tapes so the albums seem derivative and boring in comparison.
To Pimp a Butterfly on the other hand, even if you don't enjoy the direction he has taken, is something different for Kendrick. At least it keeps me interested/engaged, and in this case it's not just a change up its DAMN GOOD!

This is his third album.
Why do people keep thinking good kid maad city was his first album. Section 80 is too damn good to be forgotten.

Correct. But, I think you understand what I mean. If you want me to clarify I am more than happy to do so. I start at GKMC which introduced a lot of people to his music. Like most artist who cut early works in their 'rap careers', Kendrick is no different. Do you want me to say Major release?

Listening to this album, due to the real Funk/Jazz feel of the album, i feel like he basically did what his mom asked him to do on the previous album on the song "Real"...

But look, you take that music business serious, and put out something me and your dad can step to. Shit, you know we from Chicago, you know that's what we do

and this as well, due to the Powerful messages throughout the album and uplifting songs such as "I"

But when you do make it, give back with your words of encouragement, and that's the best way to give back. To your city...

just my thoughts anyways.

mortal man is amazing. This is a really good album. Kendrick has transcended typical hiphop albums with this as this is so much more than your normal hiphop record.

Section 80 not being recognized as Kendrick's first album worries me. It's a good album to be brush aside because of GKMC.

It sounds like the album came a long way in quality from people picking out every undesirable soundbite and claiming a sophomore slump, or Erika Badu taking his musical talent through sexual intercourse.

I felt section 80 was a solid effort but the quality I felt wasn't even close to what he started on his first major release(see what I did there?). Most notably Rigamortus but, honestly I didn't feel a whole lot of it and opted not to buy the entire album.

Loving you is complicated
Fuck the first half of u.

Sonically, I'm digging it, but I haven't really caught Kenny dropping jewels lyrically.

Might have to stare at rap genius on my next listen-through.

Damn. There are many songs on .80 that is just as good as most of the songs in gkmc

I always feel like I should get regular MP3 over iTunes, but have they upped their bitrate to 320 yet?

Variable averaging near 256 still.

I'm fine with it personally; I also get the physical CD most times. If I feel like the amazon MP3's I download or stream sound particularly bad I'll do my own rip.

Do people count Tyler the Creator's "Bastard" as his first release or is it Goblin?
I'd say Bastard, but thats just something he literally put out on tumblr for free, while he was signed to a label when it put out Goblin.
If Bastard is Tyler's first album, then you could definitely call Section.80 Kendrick's first.

Wow. Thats a great point. I definitely see Bastard as the first for Tyler...but idk...as good as section 80 is I still don't consider it Kendrick's first lol.

No one thinks about Tyler at all. :P

edit: damn beaten and snark failed :(

yeah I actually prefer section.80 by a pretty wide margin to gkmc. still love gkmc though. I just can't deny stuff like blow my high, hol' up, adhd, fuck your ethnicity, rigamortis, chapter 6 -> ronald reagen era.....yeah ok pretty much the whole album except for no make up

edit: I even see some criticism of ab soul's outro and that track never bothered me. I actually liked it, probably because of that awesome bop instrumental. so good. terrance's solo is really nice too. dude's really talented. that one line he does takes a lot of breath control.

I'm in the Bastard/section.80 camp

I don't get why people think Section.80 wasn't his first album. You had to pay to get it and was released through a label (just wasn't a major label) so therefor its an album.

btw tyler just looks at bastard as an album but in all honesty shit was like a quality mixtape. it had the album like qualities but the quality of the songs themselves were horrible i wish tyler would just remaster the shit already

I'm pretty sure he did release a remastered version.

I'm interested to hear your take.

I knew someone would bring this up, mostly because I figured they would take it out of the musical realm. I mean no disrespect against J.Cole, and indeed he's genuine (about Ferguson in particular). He's a good dude and I actually fucks with FHD. But J.Cole tangentially addresses the subject in his music, whereas Kendrick fully immersed himself in the topic and made an entire album about it in which he tackles a variety of perspectives within that realm.

My take?

GKMC > Section 80 >TPAB. Simple.

This album feels like it should be grouped with Dwele and Musiq Soulchild. Very funky at times and Jazzy at others. If "Piñata" had come out this year. It would have my vote.

GIBBS!

that complextion > blacker the berry transition...

I don't know why people were saying earlier that the production was weak. This knocks in the whip.. lol

Say what @ the bolded. This album might have some jazz in it but its waaaaaaaaay too abrasive and hard-hitting to be anywhere near Dwele and Musiq. Thats a comparison thats just straight up wrong.
