2015 Console Screenshot Thread (PS4, XB1, Wii U) [READ OP!]

EDIT: Looking at the screens again..it seems like the CA is more apparent to the sides for some reason
That's typically how chormatic aberration actually manifests due to the shape of lens elements. The center of a lens is typically the sharpest photographically, and the closer to the edge you get the softer the image, and thereby more separation of colors occurs.

Is there any technical reason why you would want to add CA to a game? The only reasonable (and stupid) thing I can think of is that the IQ-degrading element of the technique would somehow free up resources and improve the overall performance, but since I actually do assume CA uses some processing power, I can't think of any logical reason to include it in a game.

Someone, please enlighten me.
Chormatic aberration is simply the separation of colors due to the way light moves through something, so it's most commonly seen in lenses since that's all about how light moves through the different lens elements and thicknesses of glass at the center vs around the edge, etc. But color separation can also be caused for other reasons, like passing through water. Crysis used it when looking through water to mimic how light actually behaves when passing through it, for example. Driveclub uses a similar effect for the way light bounces off specific types of headlights.

It can be employed as a specific special effect, like was mentioned for Titanfall. Other games have similar use cases where the HUD/UI is electronic, and when you get injured or electronically jammed chromatic aberration becomes prominent for a moment. Or Outlast, where in the game your character has a video camera that you can look through at any time to zoom in, "record" elements for your notes, or activate night vision. Chromatic aberration is present when looking through your crappy video camera.

Even The Order has a specific artistic reason for utilizing what is maybe the most subtle and realistic recent example of the effect, as they are specifically trying to make the game look as close to a movie as possible, going to great pains to mimic how the image would look through a film camera as far as depth of field, color/contrast, film grain, etc.

But many games seem to use the effect thrown over the entire image just because it's available, without thought into what the use of it actually communicates or without any real justification or subtlety in its use.

Damn CA in BB =\ How noticeable is it in motion ?

But man, this last interior shot looks insane. So much detail. It's really a shame that the CA ruins much of the detail.
Still, game is looking absolutely amazing. From Soft creates atmosphere and mood like no other dev, IMO.

EDIT: Looking at the screens again..it seems like the CA is more apparent to the sides for some reason

Yeah, it's usually used on the edges/corners of the screen.

Loving those BB shots, btw. Looks a lot better there than it has in some other shots. Love how dense the environments are. That's one thing I loved about Dying Light too. Screw visuals, I wanna see better sound design and more geometrically complex level design.

But better visuals would be nice too. :P

And yeah, I'm in the 'fuck CA' camp. Even GTA V uses that shit. I can't for the life of me think of a reason why devs think it looks good. Especially how harshly it's implemented in most games. It just looks like crap to me, and gives the visuals a blurry, distorted look. Not a fan at all. And I find it's sudden inclusion in so many games really fucking weird.

These are great shots.

Thanks, bro!

I agree with You, but i wouldnt call all light wave distortions as chromatic aberration.
There are different types of wave distortions with different effects

You're right, what I should have specified is chromatic aberration has become a kind of catch-all term for any color shifting/channel split effect in video games. The actual definition is specific to lenses, in which case many of the uses of the effect in video games aren't really chromatic aberration even though they are often called that, a trap I fell into myself.

bummed out by the IQ/CA of the BB shots, because the game's aesthetic is otherwise awesome. big thanks to the posters in this thread for taking their time to compose such great shots.

I really love those colors and poses of the Chief.
In hindsight, Halo 3 cutscenes were really something else in visuals, poignancy and simplicity. The realtime gameplay visuals were ofuscated behind low res, no AA, but there was something really next-gen that really gave weight to cutscenes. An almost matte painting quality to them, and rarely faked like in some rushed later levels.

The trailers are probably the best last-gen, and the opening always gives me the goosebumps... to make amends for that terrible Halo 2 ending.

Finally got round to completing Advanced Warfare. Really liked the graphics. Towards the end I got some great shots.

The shots look quite crushed on my iPhone though.

Man, TLoU's lighting looks so flat after playing so many current-gen (non remasters) games.

Anyway, here's a shot of my Elven mage in Dragon Age: Inquisition (PS4)

I previously made an Elven rogue, but I saw Solas using his magic and it made me jealous, so I tried to re-create my rogue (that I was extremely pleased with) from memory. I also eased up on the eyeliner, gave her more intense green eyes, lessened the intensity of the tattoo, and gave her less of an upturned nose.

Oh, and I made her ears slightly larger so that her hair didn't clip through. I didn't want to do that, but fuck clipping hair.

These day 1 patches are getting a bit out of hand. 3 gig patch for Bloodborne and 8 gigs for The Handsome Collection. -.- Yeesh.

I'm playing through Uncharted 2, and TLOU, right now.

I bet $1Million that Naughty Dog can't make a game without a ladder....make that 5 ladders....or a press "triangle" to boost an AI up.
Yeah they did that to hide load times. If you glitch past them (UC2 has tons of glitches that let you get through walls), it's super evident.
