Digital Foundry: Bloodborne Performance Analysis

Aside from the aliasing, the stuttering and FPS drops are things that could be easily remedied in a patch, right?

Also, if Havok has been such a performance hog for the series, why continue to use it? Would something like the Euphoria engine be too much as well?

Euphoria isn't an option for the vast majority of companies because of how NaturalMotion gets involved with the development of the game. It's well beyond the scope of simply licensing the tech.

You can see it in the video. Its very regular.
I saw it, but I'm asking because in the videos they often times choose a specific section/area that shows the problem the most so you can see it easier - but it's not necessarily there all the time. But reading some comments now, it does seem to be there pretty much most of the time.

So what is this like in comparison to Dark Souls? I don't like the sound of this stuff, but it I got over the technical problems pretty easily in Dark Souls. The real thing that bothers me here are the load times which will I feel like will get to me.
Performance seems better overall than any of their previous console games.

Seems like it wouldn't pair well with the faster-paced combat either, all things considered. Thanks!

Are there any alternative physics engines that could be used? Or, would simply removing the ability for certain things to break limit occasional drops?

I noticed the stuttering too, I don't know if I'm overreacting but I think it gave me headaches, may be something related to FOV, tho.
The loading times almost got on my nerves since I'm not a great Souls player (I die a lot).

Isn't 24FPS the speed movies use?

Wouldn't that in theory create a more cinematic experience, like you're watching a blockbuster movie?

Maybe in theory, but in reality you're playing a game. A game should be as smooth and responsive as possible. Doesn't make much sense to intentionally handicap an interactive medium to make it feel like a different non-interactive medium if you can help it. Never really saw the point in that.

But the issue here is a stutter effect, which isn't even present in film.

That sounds good to me, although I don't exactly know how this certain stuttering effect looks like, so I don't know if it'll bother me more or not. Welp, I wont be getting a PS4 for a few months, so hopefully From can have some of the problems patched out by then.

I dunno, I watched some of that youtube video linked and it seems perfectly fine to me. I don't notice frame stutter in games for some reason, but hopefully they'll fix it for those that do.

24 fps don't bother you?

Actual framerate drops are rare. It's the constant stuttering that's the real problem. Other devs have fixed it rather quickly, so there's hope. I might just stop playing the game and wait for a patch. I'm not enjoying the performance I'm seeing so far at all. The load times are also incredibly awful, which Kotaku claims From said they're patching.

If people are expecting Souls fans to be disappointed by frame drops, you are mistaken.

I'm a Souls fan. An occasional frame drop wouldn't bother me at all. A near constant stutter however, does.

the first next gen game worth buying a new console for and it brings all the performance problems of the last gen with it.

Still doesn't sound nearly as bad as Dark Souls and Blighttown. That was operating at a frame rate in the single digits at times I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

People expecting frame drops to be patched are somewhat delusion. The usual is an overall increase of 10% total FPS. They are unlikely to patch out every drop, but they might be able to spruce up some problem areas.

I think there is precedent in frame timing being patched.

Glad I am waiting on this one, I will pick up when the timing issue is resolved.

Umm most people are talking about frame hitching

Eyes will bleed due to the chromatic aberration, not how the framerate feels. The way the framerate feels will just piss you off.

People keep using Blighttown as some kind of litmus test and act like all of Dark Souls had that issue when that area was the worst by itself. This game doesn't slowdown as bad as Blighttown, but it's slower across the entire game so far.

Dan is wrong, though his assessment does make me wonder if some reviews have been noticing the frame pacing problems and putting them under the general umbrella of "bad peformance."

Well that's some bullshit spreading. He's from IGN, right?

Yeah he's with IGN and he's the one who was complaining about how it was a terrible game on Twitter last night. Luckily, he's not writing their review.

Not really it performs better than any other console souls game. Also frame pacing seems to be a next gen console issue more than a previous gen.

Kind of dissapointing, but From hasn't been very skilled on the technical side during the last generation.

Hopefully they release few patches that help the issue

Jesus, what's with this guy.
He has spent way more time and energy hating on this game than any "professional" reviewer should. It's even more pathetic than how some people reacted to The Order

the loading patch I heard about is gonna be a godsend since it seems to be the main complaint from reviews.

What us up with this dude? Why is he trying so hard to troll this game? Does he do this all the time. He really seems mad.

Surprise he works at ign. most time ign guys are pretty level headed. Guess it falling apart since they lost so many people. Turning into polygon.

I saw him complain on twitter about having no checkpoints before bosses, forcing you to play through the same section again, and potions not resetting after death, forcing you to grind for them between attempts.

framerate issues framerate issues framerate issues, let me put my mask on here, let me put my mask on here

Biggest issue looks to be loading times for me. Waiting 40 secs per death in a game where you'll die A LOT, is gonna push my patience to the max.
Frame looks a little disappointing too, but it looks hopeful that can be fixed. Would have loved 60fps, but didn't seem possible this time
