lol @ people saying they can't fuck with this album because it doesn't have "bangers"
I think it's the fact people are so used to hearing 808 drum machines compared to the live instrumentals in this it's weird because at one point the more g-funk sounding songs were once the popular sound in the 90's.

I'm feeling some type of way that folks are trying to cut the skits. It's like tearing the acknowledgement out of a book....but hey to each it's own.

Maybe on GKMC, not on this album.

Not even on GKMC either. I never understood why folks like the gut stuff from albums. It's like taking the "20 sack pyramid" skit from The Chronic because I want to hear music. It's defeating the purpose of a album.

A friend of me likes the entire album except for the conversation with Tupac in Mortal Man and calls it a weak way to end the album. I don't know how to react to that.

oh man...that's interesting....

agreed. I mean if somebody wants to do it that's cool, to each their own, but I always hate the notion that it's the artist who should change. somebody saying something like "hey Kendrick, next time do ___________ because it's a pain in the ass to push a button and go to the next track" annoys me to no end.

Sometimes, I just want to listen to a collection of songs as opposed to an "album." Like if I'm driving or doing chores, I'm not going to sit there and contemplate the meaning of this shit, I just want something to bump to. The fact that TPAB works in both contexts is another reason it's great.

Think it's fair to say a good amount of people who want to listen to music don't play through albums all the time and rather individual tracks. That's where GKMC falls off for me in replayability, unless you enjoy listening to the same narrative 20 times through.

but most of the skits happen at the end of the tracks, no? so you just skip the skits.

Exactly. I listened to GKMC enough times that I got the narrative. I got what it's about. I don't feel the need to listen to Kendrick's phone conversation with his mom every time so I made a version of the album with all that stripped out. If anything, it's extended the life of the album for me because I can listen to it in different situations, like at a party.

I still listen to the original and I would never try to replace that, but sometimes I just want some dope background music.

It gets annoying when you're listening while playing video games, or having some friends over, or driving, or laying in bed and you have to manually skip the track every time. It's nothing for me to do a bit of audio editing and remove that stuff so why not?

True. I guess I'm old school when it comes down to albums. I usually make mixes in that case or just shuffle the albums on my vita. It just feels sacrilegious to tamper with an artist work even if it's sometimes an annoyance, but that's just me lol.

I agree...GKMC actually felt accessible when it comes down to just listening to music instead of just venturing like TPAB. Me however, I don't really mind the same skits and etc...the only time it was an annoyance was Supreme Clientele which felt draining at times when letting the album play.

oh yeah for sure, I get that. I'm not against doing that or anything. yall do you always. I just hate when it gets to the point where people bitch about the choices that an artist makes. you're doing exactly what doesn't annoy me. realizing what's ideal for you, doing it, and then continuing on. the poster on the previous page who lamented the fact that he even had to edit the tracks and wished kendrick would change the way he makes albums in the future to accommodate him, that's what annoys me.

But how hard would it be to just make the skits there own track?

With the way CDs play and with gapless MP3 playback you'd have no effect on album listeners and make it way easier to create a music only playlist.

I guess i'm in the minority, but the extra verbiage doesn't really bother me that much. and one of my most played tracks have one in the intro and outro.

Ok, I didn't see that earlier post. I think there's definitely hip-hop albums that I would criticize for having too many unnecessary (and usually terrible) skits, but this definitely isn't one of them. Everything Kendrick does on his albums is thoughtful and measured.

it's easy enough to do yourself and not make a fuss over it

Kendrick should tour this album with The Roots. Or maybe he's already got a good band lined up, dunno.

I imagine his band'd be the people that played on the album and have already played talks shows with him. If kenny could get Glasper, Thundercat, Martin, Dopson together for a tour playing most everything live, it would be flames.

Yes, it would be. Would be even better if he got George Clinton too.

MBDTF > Yeezus > Graduation > College Dropout > Watch the Throne > Late Registration > 808s and Heartbreak
Get this shit up out of Kendrick's thread!

Jk.. But kind of serious

A friend of me likes the entire album except for the conversation with Tupac in Mortal Man and calls it a weak way to end the album. I don't know how to react to that.

Not sure it's anticlimatic, but I could have done without drunk barbershop patron philosophy at the end, too.

Just because they please it doesn't mean it's intrinsically good.

very true but for Kendrick specifically I'm willing to err on the side of his particular vision. he ain't done me wrong yet.

anywhooo I'm done with this line of dialogue :) I've spent more time discussing it than it would have taken to edit all of his albums down

Tool puts most of their variety songs and skits on separate tracks, Kendrick is making similar long ass albums with a ton of skits and spoken word stuff, so ya. Just put them on a separate track so it is easier to skip or delete if you don't wanna hear it.

I have no problem going through all of it, especially on Kendrick's albums, but the complaint is valid, and a "fix" is simple.

TPAB finished @ 318k

Good numbers, better than GKMC.

356k with the streaming numbers added in. Good shit.

Now that all the physicals are out, I expect a big 2nd week number.

Unrelated Note: Tay Tay's really outchea outselling most rappers' first weeks when her CD's been out for five months.

I'm thinking that Lamar goes out of his way to set up his skits this way. I'll bet that most people that see individual tracks as skits just automatically skip them on the norm and he did this to get as many of those people on board as he could. Especially with what he seems to be trying to do with this particular album.

Am i the only one thinking that Kendricks next LP will hit quite soon now that he has processed everything bitter he went through on TPAB ? I would not be surprised to see a GKMC type of Album a year from now.

I really doubt you're going to get another GKMC

he has grown up and moved on
