Finally gave the album the attention it deserves, and fuck, Kendrick, you did it again. I missed so much stuff the first few listens...

Kendrick cycle: GKMC > TPAB >>>>>> S80

One more album at this level and he's the GOAT.

After the first couple of listens I only liked a handful of the songs, but even those songs had parts I didn't seem to like. I'm in the camp that loves i, Blacker the Berry is amazing and when King Kunta leaked it I really enjoyed it right off the bat. GKMC was the first album of his I ever listened to and I recall once thinking only ADHD and Swimming Pools were good. It's such a ridiculous thought to me now, as it's a no-skip album for me now (Real is the runt). But I'm like that with music.

So I kept persistent, listening to it on my way to work and on my way back home. Played it in the background while I cook, clean, etc. I really started feeling the beats and the message of the album started become clearer and it felt more complete to me. I still do dislike a few songs but I'm still listening.

GKMC > TPAB > S80 = OD would be my ranking (OD is so good I'm throwing it in).

The more you listen the smoother the whole things gets. Everything comes together so nicely. Would've never expected to get a Soulquarian-esque album from a popular rapper in 2015 of all years.
First Black Messiah, now this. Mhmm.

The thing that keeps me coming back to the album (besides the often hauntingly beautiful music of it) is how messy it is. Even something as ambitious as good kid m.A.A.d. city had an overall positive progression and ending. But in TPaB, the narrative only gets more uncertain and troubled as it goes on, both sonically and lyrically.

It's a captivating piece of work.

Patrice O'Neal was spot on with the modern translation for reparations. No Federal Income Tax, seems fair to me.

Or no fed income tax for anyone. It's robbery no matter who it's taken from.

If you did select one group of people to tax that is racism, and also is "punishing" a group a people who literally did nothing.

Middle class and upper class African Americans rejoice. Impoverished ones get nothing.

Reaganomic Reparations : /. Free Healthcare and a 250K College Fund for the impoverished families?

fuck I don't know

and I agree on the Fed Income tax being mostly robbery, but if you are gonna slippery slope, then give it to the repressed, African and Native Americans first, then the rest.

You can tell the release been messed up because of how they're doing all the promos now a week later lol

I agree with this, but the more I listen to TPAB the more on par it is with good kid

Hard to pick between GKMC and TPAB. I feel the former musically offers more punchy, catchy, radio viable tracks, but the latter is more thoughtful and well considered, with more of an old school flavour and quality. Not really going to pick a favourite yet, but I will say Kendrick has released two of the best albums in the business now. I'm pretty curious to see if he can match this level of quality with the eventual third album. Seems like an impossibly tall order.

Weirdly, I've actually never fully listened to Section 80, but now I've had so many listens of the two newer main albums, I feel going back to S80 may be somewhat of a downgrade, hence I haven't bothered lol.

Not that I want to detail the thread, but I just want to say I know where you're coming from. However those ideals would only work in a dream-like utopia. They don't stand up to reality.

It's not like we always have had it. It was adopted in 1916, and there are countries that don't have it.

Luckily you don't need to choose! Personally they are in two different categories.

Shit is pathetic tbh. Really shows TDE isn't ready for prime time. I really think they had planned to do something similar to what Cole did, but when he did it first they scrapped the plan and didn't have a backup.

Album is dope but man it's been painful watching TDE handle this. Given all the secrecy surrounding the project you would have thought they had an elaborate plan.

Idk, its looking like it was all scheduled for the week of the release. If it was truly all Interscopes fault for leaking it early then they did what they could.

First week sales would've been a LOT better tho

Would it? I feel like everyone who wanted to get the album quickly found out it came out early.

Nah son, Section 80 is still a dope album

Section 80 was a good album but it felt like a typical mixtape with somes like Rigamortis and Spiteful Chant. I wish he would have stuck with songs like Fuck Your Ethnicity. I mean go full blown rebellious throughout the album.

Anyone else wish Hood Politics in its entirety used the beat from the beginning?

Yup, was talking about this with a friend the other day.

So after multiple listens I gotta say that the tracks that have the least plays so far for me are Complexion and Mortal Man. The rest I've been listening to pretty much every day since the album came out.

this is a great read, thanks for posting

this line was especially true for the vibes I get from this album

"TPaB is a fine demonstration of having the biggest ego in the room be the music."

edit: oooo, apparently Terrace got Kendrick deep into some Count Basie Orchestra. that's my shit right there.

edit 2: lol, I love Terrace Martin

"I think after this album right here, people will be like 'It's ok to do that kind of shit [jazz and hip-hop] on an album.' People used to say that there's too much music or the sax is too soft or there's too many chords -- a lot of people used to say that to me. It was hard getting work for a certain amount of time, for me, because I've always had this same jazzy musical style. Fucking punks. Now look at them. I told y'all motherfuckers to let me play the horn."

this was a good read. insteresting seeing how Jazz influenced the album

lmao I died at that part.

Yea I hope this urges more artist to experiement with their style rather than copypasting whats hot.
