Will this be the defining holiday season for Xbox One?

Honestly I think this is a perfect time for Microsoft and 343 to delay Halo 5 as well. Halo 5 is defiantly the first party exclusive that has to get it right, MS cant afford to fuck it up. So a delay to super polish things up is a good idea in my book.

For those predicting a Halo 5 delay I'd hold off on that. MS marketing has begun already for it in full force. First Live Action trailer is airing during Walking Dead season finale Sunday, that ain't cheap.

It's a decent lineup. I'm hoping for a couple of surprise announcements during E3. Otherwise, I think Blops 3 and Battlefront will be the two big games this holiday season (maybe The Division as well).

I think a Halo 5 delay is out of the question as that would mean a spring release or waiting until fall 2016 and I don't see that happening.

yup quality is secondary when it comes to 343

Games hitting in september whether its completed or not, master chief collection style.

for me, Halo 5 is MS and 343 last chance at making things right for the Halo franchise, a delay can only make things better.

I don't think Sony going to get caught with their pants down again. The holiday season was brutal for them last year and I expect them to actually compete this holiday season.

Yeah, Halo 5 for this year is a lock. A delay would cost MS too much money at this point due to advertising alone.

We'll see how much the MCC fiasco has damaged the franchise.

The overall lineup looks strong tho.

I doubt it'll have much of an impact. All it will take is a bit of pre/post release hype and people will forget about the MCC's issues. People who like Halo will still like Halo, if Halo 5 ends up being good many of them will happily buy it, regardless of how the MCC launched.

Is this the narrative we're spinning now? MCC launched broken as hell yeah, but Halo 4 was solid on a technical level.

Just think for sec, Halo 5, Blops 3, Battlefront, The Division, Forza 6 and Rise of the Tomb Raider all on Xbox One this holiday at $299 would sell through the roof imo.

MS just got a helping hand with U4 and Zelda being delayed. But, E3 is still to come. No one knows what's up Spencer's, Reggie's and Shu's sleeves.

It was brutal? The PS4 still sold by the boatload without a single price cut and apperently with "no games" and WW it sold like twice as much. Games wise, they were about on part with the other two.

I mean, am I living in some bizarro world here or something?

It will likely be Xbone's defining holiday season, in that it's the only plausible timeframe where it can be a serious contender (in one region) that isn't also marred by a totally fumbled exclusive launch and mixed pricing messages (maybe), and also in that it's likely to show a system firing on all cylinders and only managing a local standstill and global failure.

Whether this is a definition anyone would or should want is a different question.

The h5 beta was a blast for me
here's to a successful holiday for everyone

Now give me BTB halo 5 beta this summer to bring in the hype machine

3 of the 4 biggest games are multiplats available on PS4 this Fall too. Forza won't sell much, but Tomb Raider is a bit of a wild card. Still looks it will appeal mainly to people that like Halo.

Lol, Microsoft missing a holiday with a title like that? No chance in hell. It's the only season they realistically have.

They will bring out the whips and drums if need be, that game is seeing release this year.

He could simply be stating it from an exclusive game lineup standpoint (in his opinion).

Does Sony has a franchise big enough to counter Halo? U suppose GoW and Uncharted but I doybt to be a new iteration of thosw games by holiday.
Yet MS has Tomb Raider. I don't think Sony being able to counter those 2 big franchises, at least not with their exclusive portfolio. Maybe they manage to secure a third party exclusive like RE7.

They need an impressive, AAA, XB1 exclusive. Not on PC either.

They need to build a game with eSram in mind and show it off and prove the world wrong.

That's all.

Well, sure it could, but we're assuming the game needs a delay if the game is done and actually ready (I understand cynicism about that, really I do) but they shouldn't delay it if it doesn't need it.

343i are a big studio, I don't think MCC issues would have caused them resource problems as I've seen that Splash Damage helped on the big March update that helped fix a lot of the problems, obviously I don't have access to the all information but I don't get the impression they moved resources from Halo 5 to MCC, it seems they just drafted in extra help for it.

343 have said they needed 3 years for a Halo game, they've had that, I think it will be ready. If its not then sure, they should delay it, but I don't think they should just do it unless it actually needs it.

But at the same time, MS is doing everything in their power to beat the PS4, atleast in NA.

MS is in prime position again to demolish the PS4 in terms of sales for Nov/Dec.

They aren't going to miss this opportunity.

They probably should do this to counter Uncharted 4 which Tomb Raider was positioned to do. Now that it's delayed I doubt Square would agree to delay their game as well. Something else needs to fill that spot.

For people on the hunt for a console this holiday the full package( mutiplat and exclusive) looks great so far for X1 this holiday and if they get the price to 299 it will sell a ton considering everything coming out.

Why is it assumed Halo 5 is being rushed for it to come out this year? Genuinely curious.

I think since they've been relatively quiet since the beta and the marketing machine hasn't fully spun up yet people take it as a sign of the game being behind schedule and needing to be delayed, rather than it being a bit early in the year for it to be in the spotlight.

"ESRAM in mind" is bait for fools. ESRAM used to its full, DX12, Brad Wardell-endorsed, Big Mac, secret circuitry in the power supply that people have physically taken apart and found no circuitry in, extent is definitely a plausible development for this winter, will definitely improve Xbone performance, but leads to an Xbone that has memory nearly as good as the PS4's but still lacks a third of the processing hardware.

If there's a global salvation, it's in exclusives, but right now the AAA industry is pointing to a PC/PS4/Xbone "oh god please give us money before we go broke" meta that will stunt the PS4 and strangle the Xbone.

they basically stole 60$ from people last holiday. you cant expect people to blindly trust them again

and the beta also had tons of connection issues while playing as party

What if Uncharted gets delayed again?

Its a bad idea for MS to go chasing Sony release dates, UC4 is going to be big whenever it releases and MS might end up delaying Quantum Break, i've always thought Scalebound was due in first half of 2016 and who knows, they might have something else.

We don't know when Phantom Dust and Crackdown are launching, although obviously I'm not expecting Microsoft to launch 4 games like that in the first half of the year. Chasing Sony/Uncharted's release date isn't going to do much for them.

If its ready for the holiday they should release it then and hope that with TR, FM6 and anything else they have coming that it gives them a big holiday.

With the news of Zelda for Wii U not reaching it's 2015 goal for release and Uncharted 4 being delayed until 2016, both PS4 and Wii U both lost their big holiday exclusive game to next year, while Halo 5, Xbox One's big holiday exclusive is set to launch this year. With neither PS4 or Wii U having a big exclusive for the holiday, could this be the holiday season for the Xbox One to really shine?

So since Zelda and Uncharted were delayed PS4 and Wii U won't have an exclusive title for the holidays... Yeah right OP, whatever you say.

If Halo 5 has any issues akin to those MCC had at launch then it might not be good.

The important thing to remember is that, for Microsoft, the calendar is reduced to 2 months. I think that's what one of the execs said about preseason stuff last year.

Maybe there is a surprise coming from Sony at E3 to fill the fall exclusive hole. Maybe Sony will do some crazy bundle, who knows. All I know is that Microsoft is advertising the best games of 2015 are on XBOX ONE and yet, Bloodborne is on PS4 which negates that argument.

If Sony does absolutely nothing for the fall, then this will be Microsoft's best chance to shine. And if somehow the difference isnt all that great, or they havent clawed their way into the lead, then the question becomes: where do they go from here? Should be an interesting holiday season.

Strange rationale. There's no need to start the heavy marketing until after E3. You really don't need a year worth of advertising to get the word out that a new Halo is coming...

No, delaying Halo 5 to Spring 2016 would be silly from a "console seller" standpoint. The game needs to be out before the Holiday season for MS to have a chance at getting the top spot in America. They were never this close to being #1 in America this early in a gen.

If anything, I could see Quantum Break getting delayed to Spring 2016 for the Xbox One to have something to go against Uncharted 4. Spring usually isn't huge for console sales so a new IP being there would probably be better.

Are they really? It only happened last Fall because of an extreme price disparity. Most seem so sure that PS4 won't get a significant price cut, but if it does it really nullifies any Microsoft might try. I really don't see them giving the holiday season in the US that easily again. And if Sony does respond and Xbox doesn't dominate then the entire year becomes a failure as they are not releasing anything meaningful until the Fall. That is big gamble assuming your competitor won't adjust...if that is what they are doing

I also would not assume that Sony nl has big releases planned for Fall. I would be SHOCKED if Uncharted 4 was the only game they had pegged for that time. I'm starting to think they knew UC4 would be delayed a long time ago.

nope. Halo series isn't the juggernaut it was in the xbox and xbox360 era
halo 4 killed the series status. all ps4 needs is a superior multiplat and they win again.

Well we've seen nothing from Gt7 so atm it really is a pipe dream for it to come out this holiday season. :p Wouldn't change my opinion though as i've played both franchises and vastly prefer Forza.

I prefer Forza as well, but GT destroys it in sales. The ps4 is also starved for a racing game while the xb1 is already getting a 2nd forza motorsports.

I know. But it would be nice for them to surprise us with some sort of technical mastery and blow our minds with a game built for the XB1.

Just wishful thinking on my part I guess.

the answer to this depends on what Sony does and how much cheaper MS can get the X1. If they can't undercut the PS4 significantly like they did last year, they'll be left behind. It doesn't really matter though. At best they take Nov and Dec in NA, but WW they still get absolutely outdone by the PS4 and the gap continues its rapid rise.
The price is already cut and that's not helping. Also from that tweet we got recently Sony isn't trying to give Microsoft a smooth ride this holiday.
