Titan X Launch / Review / Tears Thread

You really should try crysis 3 to see how far it goes. At 4k, you will hit some barriers and push the cards to the max. Keep running around the opening rain sequence, especially on the ramp that connects to the floating platform. Similarly the welcome to the jungle section with all the crazy explosions and grass.

Same situation. 4K, 4xTXAA, everything else maxed. This was the highest temperature and voltage I could get.

The default fan attached to the GPU. My case is just air. At 70 degrees, the fan is running at about 72% speed.

That is weird. Really weird. Can you take a snapshot of the graphs (temp, voltage and usage %) while running crysis 3? Also what FPS did you get for crisis ultra at 4xTXAA? Your claim seems waaay below spec and I'm really curious to see what's going on.

I can't get the OSD to work for Precision X, or I would. Did I mention I absolutely HATE this UI? Seriously it's the most intuitive thing I've ever seen.

EDIT: Nevermind. I have to tick each option I want to show up. Just a sec....

Haha! Yeah. They must have given it to a graphics designer who had no clue about the basics of UI design. Looks great, but confusing as hell to actually work with.

Here's a screenshot. FPS is kinda shit, as you'd imagine. 4K + TXAA is not going to give you a very smooth gameplay experience :P I wouldn't run the game like that anyways. I was just trying to push the card.
crazy low temps, do you live in Antarctica?
Pennsylvania :P It's currently 68 degrees in this room.

still testing games it's addictive!

bf4 - 4k, ultra, 2xmsaa runs at 60fps , msaa killed my old 780's at this res, it's actually also shown me that this 4k gsync monitor has very little input lag and feels surprisingly close to my 120hz monitor and this is with gsync enabled

dayz - 4k, ultra, no aa runs 40-60fps, this is the biggest difference so far, sli worked before but not great, i'm getting double the performance of 780sli with a single card :O

prototype 2 - 4k, max , low aa - 50-60fps, for whatever reason my 780's would never go above 40fps in this game, they barely went above that at 1080p sometimes, the game looks excellent at these settings, will play again

Speechless. I think the only people who can comment on this is Nvidia. Assuming you ran the game long enough, I almost get the feeling that there is something wrong with the temperature sensor calibration. Have you checked the air coming out of your card under load? Unless Nvidia snuck in some magic coolant, that reading isn't making sense o.O

How would I check it? Stick my hand in there? I doubt I'd be able to tell the difference between air coming off a 70 degree card and an 80 degree card.

But now that you mention it, I am a LITTLE worried that the temperature reading may be inaccurate. What would cause that? And even if it were wrong, could it be that it's actually a temperature that's damaging to my card and I just don't know it?

Fellow GAFers im at a crossroads. I need some advice.

I currently have this version of the GTX 980.

I'm considering buying this card from a fellow user.

My problem is should I SLI or get a Titan X. Price isnt really the issue i'm just curious which option would give me a better gaming experience. I don't game on any fancy monitor. I just play everything maxed out at 1080p60fps on my 50inch TV. My concern are mainly for future games coming out like Witcher 3, GTA V, and Batman AK.

Other than getting a thermal imaging camera or holding an air thermometer in front of it, I can't think of any option other than using your hand. May be get a sense of it every 5 degrees and see if it continues to get hotter after after your reading tops at 70?

Sorry if I freaked you out. Just trying to help. I'd recommend that you PM Andy and see if he could provide any guidance. Better safe than sorry.

I think youre fine. You have your fan speed high, all the reviews used default profile

Oh man, Far Cry 4 just crashed after about 45 mins of playtime. Looks like I'm gonna have to lower the OC a bit, or switch from Afterburner to Precision X for voltage control.

The temps and noise on the standard cooler are already quite high, so not sure I want to go that route.

SLI 980s will provide higher average FPS as long as the game supports multi-gpu's.

Titan X will provide a more consistent experience and probably higher minimum fps.

At 1080p though, I don't see how either setup is necessary. A single 980 should be enough to max games at that res and refresh rate.

If you end up going the 980 SLI route, I'm selling the following card. PM me if interested.

Understandable, and I'm not about to tell you to hide money from her, but it can be healthy for a relationship when both parties are allowed to set aside a percentage of their earnings to do whatever they please with it. You see, while my wife doesn't mind "gaming-related" purchases, she does mind gas-guzzling sports cars, but thankfully she has no say in the matter because that part of our finances is completely separate. Just saying! ;-)

Yeah, all the good reasons for doing that could be a thread on its own. In my case it's higher than the usual ballpark, so I ran it by her and she was all "oh, of course, gaming is your big thing, thanks for asking though".

I actually used the sports car analogy when explaining the purchase to a coworker. "Some guys get sports cars, some guys get badass gaming PCs."

Got the Titan X installed and have been running some tests.

Highest stable overclock now is 220 core, 400 ram, 112mv voltage, 110 power limit.

Gives me the following in 3DMark Firestrike:

About 1200 less than my 970s in SLI. Worth it for the removed memory limit and lack of SLI headaches.

And Watch Dogs is finally smooth with ultra textures. My white whale. Almost in tears here. :P

Not only that, the game is smooth with ultra textures and in 4k (using fxaa). Trying to get the get the game to utilize SLI was such a nightmare, but with a single titan x the game just works. Yeah, tears should generally not be shed over Ubi games, but in this case I may have to make an exception.

Has everyone moved to Precision X for tuning these? Getting frustrated with Afterburner 4.1.0 not being fully compatible. I prefer Afterburner for sure...so I'm hesitant. Any news on an update?

Moved to Precision after Afterbruner was irritating me. First time I've gone back to Precision since they decided to make the utility in house. Works well after you get adjusted to the garbage UI.

also fixed my downclocking issue. my rog swift was at 144hz. i changed it to 120hz and like magic my cards are now downclocking when idle.

Yeah that UI is so bad.

So they're *NOT* downclocking when idle now that you're at 120Hz? Or they are? Must be a typo.

Finally at 1440p/144hz btw. :)

Anyone got any advice? I got my ASUS Titan X today and have been tweaking for most of the day. I just can't seem to get any kind of stable overclock.

I've used Afterburner, Precision, and GPU tweak. I've increased voltage by 112mV, and have only been increasing the core clock. Can't even add an offset of a 100 without the driver crashing when tested in Kombustor.

Something seems off. Most reports that there is a lot of head room on these cards.

It is running on PCIe 2.0 x 16 but that should'nt matter and I have a 1250W PSU (Thermaltake) I connected it via 6pin and 8pin.

Any thoughts.. I'm considering flashing the bios...

at 144hz they weren't down clocking. they were staying at 1001mhz and providing temps on the 55c range. i changed my monitors to 120hz and now they are down clocking as they should when idle.

and about time!! how does it feel.

have you tried your OC on games? 3Dmark benchmarks?

Using custom fan profile? Have it kick in pretty aggressively at around 75C

Gotcha.

It's pretty great. Awesome monitor. Love the real estate. Taking some getting used to for BF4 MP. Lot of screen space to watch, heh.

overclocking is never a guarantee. there was a review that could only add like 80 mhz.

It would be nice. I can't even get the OSD to work for Precision X 99% of the time. I got it to work for Crysis 3, but it's seemingly impossible to get it to show up for Far Cry 4. I'm curious as to what my FPS is... and my memory being used. But I still have to open afterburner to see those things.

Can ask what program people are using to test their overclcoks? I think I got 3DMark 11 kicking around.

I might just try a few clock and do some real application/gaming testing. I think we might need an update to some of our fav tweaking programs as I am getting mad inconsistencies across the board.

  • 3DMark
  • Unigine Heaven
  • Unigine Valley
  • Play the games that you like and use any built-in benches on repeat.

I find the lack of backplate revolting for such a pricetag.

It's a thermal performance issue. TITAN X users are typically more hardcore so you see more tri-SLI/4-way SLI setups. Backplates have no place in that configuration.

You can certainly purchase your own. $30-$40. Not a big deal if you're already buying a TITAN X.

i dont know if id agree with that. id be shocked if there werent far more people using sli with weaker gpus. the whole draw of a gpu like titan x is that you pay a premium for perf without having to suffer through mgpu.

Yeah.. i know it´s better for sli but for me as a single gpu owner i would prefer one. I´m waiting for the evga backplate (already confirmed by a evga employee on the evga foruns)

Congrats...now oc that baby and let us know how you do.

Played with the new "toy" a few hours, not a huge step up from my msi 980 gaming (as expected since the 980 easily overclocked to 1500/8000).

So far i got to play up to +198mhz (boosting to 1400) on the core without any problem but im already hitting the power limit since it throttles to 1380 a few times.

The card is a little noisy at 68%, i adjusted the fan curve to keep the card below 80c, it´s really the perfect time for nvidia to upgrade the stock cooler (i know AMD stock cooler is even worse) at least on titan since the AIB partners can´t use a diferent solution (mandatory by nvidia).

Tested a few games like AC:U, FC4 and BF4 mp and done some firestrikes:

Firestrike:

Firestrike Extreme:

Will play a little bit with mem oc tomorrow.

Is it true that the Titan X doesn't support all DX12 features in hardware? I'm not sure I want to spend so much on something that's going to run into that issue so soon.

False. Titan X (and 960/970/980) fully supports DX 12.0 and 12.1 in hardware. The FUD that has been spreading around is related to unlimited bindless resources (Resource binding tier 3), which is not part of 12.0 or 12.1. May be it will come in a future version of DirectX, may be not. But rest assured that we are set for the next year or two at least.
