Same feel, the ambition is there like a mofo, the concept is lofty..but the abject mediocrity in the verses is killing me..thats KL in a nutshell, its so easily digestible to the masses because its basic in rhyme structure and face value to the point of being ham fisted.

If this is what hiphop heads are going crazy over they've forgotten the face of their fathers.

Well now this is some elitist shit if I've ever seen it. HEAVENS forbid something be accessible to more than a few people in some lone corner of an underground hip hop forum. Real™ hip-hop yall.

I hope you're putting money down on Killer Mike then.

do you have a blog or something I can subscribe to?

I really hate the tendency of rappity rap nerds feeling like artists who rhyme 5 syllables in a bar are better than artists who dont. The only thing that matters is how well an idea or point is being conveyed. I dont give a fuck about how verbose someone can be while conveying that idea. Thats such an internet thing to bring up "basic rhyme structure"...when you write a song like How Much a Dollar Cost, how in the fuck does that even matter?

Meh.Kendrick fans do it all the time. So find it kind of funny seeing it sent their way.

You're right though. Poetry is not all wrapped up in the complexity of the rhyme scheme or size of the words used.

Water, water, everywhere,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink

shit-tier kindergarten stuff.

Really curious to see what those hating on Kendrick listen to. If any of y'all say Big Sean, 2Chains, or any of them lil' niggas, I'm gonna weep.

There's nothing wrong with rapping straight fwd. 2Pac wasn't a technical show off but still had great albums. At the end of the day this is great sounding socially conscious music, it's not like Kendrick is anywhere near an incompetent emcee.

This album is very different lyrically (on a technical level) than Tetsuo n Youth but both albums are great sounding music w. competent rapping. I consider both classic for different reasons.

A lot of "better" rappers couldn't even construct an album like these w.guns to their heads.

btw, Kendrick sold 118k second week.

Just for comparison's sake, Cole sold 135k second week.

I'm going to go ahead and take my L for saying TPAB's going platinum by the end of April.

Finally got around to listening to the whole album after just skimming songs for a couple of weeks.

He was going for something here but I ain't deep enough for it. Albums can grow on me if I want to listen to it for a few songs that captivate my interest but nothing on here is music I would ever be in the mood for. Tis ashame, I loved GKMC and Section 80 but he just went a little too poetic this time. Maybe next time Kendrick.

Just picked this up today and listened through maybe 4 times. The hipster in me wanted to write-off the hype, but can't. Album is insanely good. How it accomplishes dreamlike to adrenaline-filled transitions so well, I have no idea. Kendrick is a genius.

I honestly have a hard time believing that someone who loved both S80 and GKMC doesn't at least like songs like hood politics, how much a dollar cost, blacker the berry, or mortal man, at least on some level.
But hey, if you don't like it you don't like it I guess.

Top 5 rap-GAF post right here.

Kendrick doesn't have to be some over conscious lyricist to put out some good shit. This album flows like straight poetry to (and you don't have to be a masterful wordsmith to write some good ole fashion poetry!)

I'm pretty casual when it comes to hip hop so forgive me-

Why is he doing a weird voice on some of his tracks? King Kunta, How Much a Dollar Cost, and Blacker the Berry sound great, but in tracks like Institutionalized he does something weird with his voice, almost like a subtle autotune or something. I don't get it and it makes the track annoying to listen to, anyone agree?

K.Dot's been doing this for a while now. He adds different inflections to his voice depending on the tone and the subject of the song. Lots of people I know don't care for them, but I personally love them. "u" is a fantastic example on why these inflections work: the first part of the track he's mad, but then he breaks down in tears and booze in the second part.

I guess it works from a storytelling standpoint, almost like structure in a poem or something. I can see the artistic merit but I'm not a fan of his high pitched voice.

Rapsody fucking killed it on Complexion.

Where was that verse when I was growning up?
