We asked our local grocery store to make a Mario Kart birthday cake...

What do you think?

I'm honestly really impressed. There's great line work there. It's frosting, people! The perspective's a little weird, but I think the detail makes up for it. A professional bakery would have probably made a fondant car, which is easier, but you don't get to eat it.

Could you have told the customers that what they were requesting was outside of your skill set? I know, for example, every balloon artist I've ever seen has told me when my first two or three requests are outside of his or her skill set.

I would if I spoke to them and at least be honest about what it will likely look like when taking the order but usually the orders were just sitting there when we came in for our shift and just had to follow orders.

I thought it was a scam that the corp offered the service but wouldn't invest in any kind of training to actually make a good product. $40-50 for a crappy sheet cake and premade icing in a bucket... blech!

Yeah. For something random is not bad. I guess depends on how much you paid for everything.

Heck, an edible printout could have been better as long as the provided image was good...probably cheaper too, if they had the means.

Yeah, that makes sense. Sorry, that seems like a shit job.

This reminds me of the time I went to my local grocery store for a video-game related cake, one with Rosalina on it. It was for me (yes, I buy cakes for myself on my birthday, it's not weird lots of people do it I bet), and I got the weirdest looks when I asked them to do it. To add insult to injury, they didn't even know who Rosalina was. Yes, believe it or not, there are people who are employed to create children cakes who don't know who Rosalina is. Please, don't face-palm all at once. One of them at least knew what Mario was, but pointed to one of the stock cakes they have with Princess Peach on it. I had to hold back my laughter so I didn't offend them.

To make a long story short, I actually had to go home and print some pictures of Rosalina off to show them---just to be safe, I went with five good pictures, some official renders, some of it really high quality Rosalina fan art (choosing which ones to use was a difficult matter in itself) just to make sure they got her good side.

As you can see, I was NOT satisfied with it and complained to the manager. This got me the cake for free and, hey, I was happy. I felt guilty getting it for totally free though, I just wanted a discount, so I bought some cupcakes along with it. Light blue and yellow like Rosalina, of course.

I felt bad eating the cake so I kind of just let it sit on my kitchen counter for awhile, and when it started to melt, put it in my freezer. It's still in there---I don't have the heart to eat it. :(

You're strange.

It's good for frosting. Could have been a lot worse. If you went to a cake shop, it probably would have been better-though it would be more expensive.

I need to know the name of the grocery store so I can add them to my blacklist.

I sincerely hope most of this is fiction and/or sarcasm.

Do I need GAF Gold to see the /s at the end or something?

lol, this is a funnily strange post.

I think I would have been more disappointed if it turned out really well. Part of the joy of asking a grocery store to make cakes is to see how ridiculous they come out. This cake would bring some solid joy to my birthday celebration. lol

Is this copypasta from somewhere?

That's a really decent cake for a grocery store, imo.

Are you for real?

That's really good for a grocery store bakery, considering 99% of the cakes they do all they're asked to so is write "Happy Birthday -name-" in flowery lettering.

I love it. While it may not be "perfect," I believe it wholly conveys Mario Kart in the realm of decorated cakes.

And as an aside, my aunt, who worked as a Jitney Jungle's cake decorator in south Mississippi many years ago, went out of her way to concoct a Game Boy Color cake for my eighth-birthday, coinciding with the release of the hardware that year.

It was, by and far, the best birthday cake I'd ever seen, not just because of the fact it solidified by recieval of a Game Boy Color, but because a cake decorator (my aunt) pained herself to get the entire thing "just right."

I guess I'm saying that I'm biased in-terms of cake decorators, but regardless of the final product, someone went out of their way to get this Mario Kart cake right. They could have half-assed it with a figurine and text. But NO: They took a frosting-gun and went for it, and that makes it all-the-more better in my eyes.

You sound a tad ungrateful there. I think it's a great looking cake and I applaud whoever did it per your request.

Yeah, I agree. For a grocery store especially.

If you really wanted some professional looking cake you would have to pay out the nose and not get it at a grocery store.

Hats off to whoever made this cake for probably like 20 bucks.

Cake's pretty alright. You wouldn't get any complains from me. Unless it tasted bad.
