We asked our local grocery store to make a Mario Kart birthday cake...

This reminds me of the time I went to my local grocery store for a video-game related cake, one with Rosalina on it. It was for me (yes, I buy cakes for myself on my birthday, it's not weird lots of people do it I bet), and I got the weirdest looks when I asked them to do it. To add insult to injury, they didn't even know who Rosalina was. Yes, believe it or not, there are people who are employed to create children cakes who don't know who Rosalina is. Please, don't face-palm all at once. One of them at least knew what Mario was, but pointed to one of the stock cakes they have with Princess Peach on it. I had to hold back my laughter so I didn't offend them.

To make a long story short, I actually had to go home and print some pictures of Rosalina off to show them---just to be safe, I went with five good pictures, some official renders, some of it really high quality Rosalina fan art (choosing which ones to use was a difficult matter in itself) just to make sure they got her good side.

As you can see, I was NOT satisfied with it and complained to the manager. This got me the cake for free and, hey, I was happy. I felt guilty getting it for totally free though, I just wanted a discount, so I bought some cupcakes along with it. Light blue and yellow like Rosalina, of course.

I felt bad eating the cake so I kind of just let it sit on my kitchen counter for awhile, and when it started to melt, put it in my freezer. It's still in there---I don't have the heart to eat it. :(

Are you seriously talking shit about this? That looks awesome!

It's just a grocery store, ffs. If you want an amazing piece of work ask a proper cake store next time.

Considering you got that at a grocery store, that's quite impressive. The person who did that put some care into it. Probably going above and beyond for what you paid for it.

Looks pretty nice concidering that its made at a grocery store.

The upper one with no figurines would be better than that in op. They could draw a street with finish line and it would be better. The only thing that screams mario kart from OP cake is mario painting. Whole cake should be themed no just part of it. It's lazy job.
I dont think you can call it lazy without knowing how much the cake costed. Price pays a big role when it comes to how much you can expect. The top cake that you showed might have cost 3-4 times more, who knows (maybe even more if you had to pay for the Mario figures as well). It definitelly looks like a more expencive cake at least. We also dont know the skill level of those who made the cake. Some are more artistic than others, but that doesnt necessarily mean that someone are lazy because of that.

Did you give them a picture?

I mean, I used to work in a grocery mart bakery in high school and people would ask for the weirdest things, but incredibly vague in their descriptions, and not provide a picture. Then when picking up would be totally confused at why the cake didn't look like what was in THEIR head.

Not bad at all considering it's from a grocery store. Here they don't even take requests, there's one bakery that will accept a photo which they will print on edible paper and that's how far they go with custom cakes here.

Sure, compared to those fancy cakes you see on TV, it's not as good, but they'd have charged you a whole lot more. I think it's a nice cake.

My Uncle worked at the bakery at a local Pathmark (grocery store chain in NorthEast).
My Uncle also served 35 years of his life locked up for manslaughter (I am not kidding), and got the job at Pathmark after. First he worked the meat area (butcher, seemed appropriate), then he got a promotion to the bakery.

My point being is the people running the bakery at your local grocery store more often than not are NOT bakers. They are someone following a recipe. Sometimes you do get a baker, that is why my mom goes to another supermarket across town, the baker there is an aspiring baker so they make some pretty good shit, but generally speaking, the people are just normal people trying to make a living.

So honestly this person tried their best.

Oh wow, it was done by hand. And without a reference, its almost like the last Mario kart the frosted
played was the original, and that Mario sprite is what they remembered when they made the design.

Yup, this is correct. Everything usually in a grocery store is frozen or pre made, cakes included. There is only a couple things that are actually store made. There is step by step instructions for how to make everything.

My manager doesn't even know how to decorate cakes or even cook frozen food at the right temperatures. Its embarrassing for such an easy job.

Clearly this person tried their best.

I don't know how or why (or if) you expected some kind of cake artisan at the local grocery store, but this thread makes me feel bad for the person who tried to make you what you wanted and is now having their honest attempt dismissed.

Most grocery store cakes / basic bakery cakes will just print out a picture on sugar paper and then add some designs around it. Or even add a plastic doll (amiibo would work great for that). I think it's remarkable they took the time to paint that Mario in frosting. Sure, it's far from perfect but the lines are clean and it's pretty well done besides the weird perspective and face.

They could've added a checkerboard pattern, which is really easy to do and a basic cake decorating technique, and some grass in frosting to finish it off. But overall I'd be happy considering it probably was quite cheap for such a personalized cake.

Mods, I agree, this was totally tag worthy. I can't believe I almost didn't click on this thread and would have missed this tale of mirth and mischief.

And OP, that's not bad for at all for a grocery store cake.

this looks pretty good. my sister bakes as a hobby and says its pretty hard to do this kind of cakes.

"We asked our local grocery store to make a Mario Kart birthday cake"

Well if you were going for a professional finish that was your first mistake.
Exactly it is going to made on minimum wage with one hand with the icing gun and the other hand holding a smartphone for a reference picture and done in the best part of 10 minutes.

Oh my god.
Reminds me of the time when a chocolatier ended up making a load of easter eggs with shopping list item names as the customer handed in their shopping list instead of the list of kids named by mistake. Like during the task didn't they think "who would want an easter egg named bacon?".

I was hope people would realize that's out of character for me. :<

'Course it's a joke (but I bet someone has really done that though), the cake's from gogle. I just cut off the "Julia" name.
At least you were spared having post linked in your tag.

...but again for my 30th :\
The OP didn't say it was for their 30th, right?

Jesus this thread delivered.

Who the fuck buys themselves a custom birthday cake then complains it not good enough for them? I bet they didn't even say it was for them.
