PS4 performance on a ~£300 PC. Can it be done? (spoiler: yes)

Day after day, year after year, the arguments of those who defend one side is the same. Do not you realize that everyone has a preference for something and you'd better let people choose for themselves?

Some prefer to play on PC, others play on console.

I know all that each has to offer and I prefer console.

Interesting. I'm going to build something similar, though I might go for a cheaper mobo and case. Won't need non-stock cooler either. Thanks mate.

I really wish they would.

But then you have one side of console users pining for heaps of OS amenities from rich dashboards to suspend to media center functions. Those niceties are not free <_<
 
raw power wise it is similar, but that doesn't mean game will run on similar performance, it will run better on console, maybe not now but in the next few years it will.
 
Well one big plus for consoles is that they don't lose performance over time like almost every Windows OS to date. Just witness this by myself again. Wanted to play some Dota 2 after a half year of break and the game was slow as hell on Win7 due to all the shitty updates and extra software that installed over the months on my system. One really bad thing was There Came an Echo. This game alone installed over 20 MS Speech Packs on my PC and slowed the system massively down. Not to forget all the anti-malware and virus scanners you have to run on Windows. It's awful and just reminded me how much more I prefer consoles for my gaming sessions these days. In the end I had to set Win7 back to an old date before I could continue to play the game in acceptable perfomance.

I would always recommend someone a gaming console over a PC for playing games. That's what they made for. PCs are not. They are workstations first of all and you notice this with every update and extra program you need to install and setup for your needs.

No problem. Runs pretty sweet. But I tend to stick to my older games. Bioshock Infinite runs like a beauty at Very High settings.
 
stuff like this usually never makes sense. What about a monitor and Windows? But sure I suppose you can use your TV, but personally I prefer a monitor so I can sit properly.

The cost of an OS is quite substantiable and if I wanted to buy both the OS (windows 7) and a cheap monitor I'd pay half the price of what a PS4 will cost me.

A third issue is what about sound? Sure if one were to use the TV it wouldn't be an issue, but that would IMO require you to put an effort into - meaning also buying a controller so you can do some couch gaming.

I've seen quite a lot of these articles or threads and some even manages to forget about mouse/keyboard as if it was something everybody have owned since forever.

Truth of the matter is quite simply that most people do indeed have a TV, far more than people who doesn't care about gaming OR have a really old desktop and just so happen to have all kinds of spare parts lying around (monitor/M/K/OS).

Honestly would people really bother to go so much on a compromise just to get a cheap "next gen" or "current gen" gaming experience?

I have both a PS4 and a gaming PC so I wouldn't consider myself biased, but unless I'm missing something here this seems foolish.

Did you take account for the price of your TV when you bought your console? Like you said, you can use your TV, and you don't have to use a controller to do couch gaming - wireless mice and keyboard exist.
 
So now that PS4 finally got good exclusive, all threads of this kind is going to be "but muh bloodborn". Can you build? Yes you can, but what is the point of PC if it offers console-like experience? I pay more and I get more, simple as that. The only reason for building 300 pounds PC for me is if you for some reason don't like controllers at all.

AMD and Nvidia are eventually going to stop optimizing their drivers for their currently available cards which could cause the performance relative to consoles to decrease over time.
 
The real question is why would you want PS4 performance on a PC?

If you do not have enough money just buy the console, if you have enough money and are not interested in exclusives just buy a PC with better specs....

That's not entirely true. It's just that as the GPU architecture evolves, there's only so much you can do with the old cards. Case in point, look at the 9800gtx. It's 7 years old and still meets minimum reqs for brand new games :)

TCAE didn't impact my Windows one bit, same for all the normal updates. How many av programs have you installed exactly? Maybe that's the problem here because the days when Windows would slow down by itself are long gone, if even DOTA slows down and it happens to you regularly there's something else going on. How much RAM do you have? Free disk space?

Sucks to be the guy that likes PC games and thus wants a PC above else - PC games being both PC centric and console centric. There are plenty of games that function fine on even less than a PS4, not to mention the countless older generation games also available.
 
The upcoming feature in the last paragraph sounds interesting but they should test each generation of Intel Quad Cores not just the second gen i5 and up.
I just want to see if I can get a decade of use from my ancient i5 cpu.

There is no satisfaction for this kind of machine might as well save the trouble and buy a console.

I tried once - instead of feeling happy with the perfomance you wanted to upgrade it for more. Then what's the point? You built it in the first place to save money you know?



So the choice either PS4 for it's price with decent performance or Best looking performance on better PC (definitely not this kind)

What about the games? The PC can play thousands of exclusives and has backwards compatability that the PS4 can only dream of.

Okay slightly off topic, but TECHNICALLY even the people running pirated version will get Windows 10. Yes it will not make their copy genuine. It will still be a pirated version. But they do not have to pay as they don't care about using a pirated version. There isn't any feature that Microsoft has outlined, which will prevent non-genuine holder from using it

The whole point of that version is that there will be features missing or hobled performance. Why would anyone bother activating Windows in the first place if they gave them everything

No its not. There are people out there who wants to use non-genuine version and will always use non-genuine version. They have been doing it before and they still will be doing it in future. Even if Microsoft don't allow Windows 10 to them, they will still find a way to crack and use it.

The whole point of giving it free officially, is that Microsoft want everyone to get into their eco-system. Store apps/games etc. there is a bigger picture to it.

But then again you can make the same argument that people who wouldn't buy a genuine licenced copy are likely not going to buy paid app either lol

This really is something that gets overlooked. Buy a PS4, can't access old games on it unless you buy them again (or rent/stream, for PS3 games). Buy new PC hardware, old games still work. Want a game to look better on your new PS4, hope for and then buy the remaster. Want a game to look better on your new PC hardware, increase the graphics settings you previously couldn't or download a texture pack (if applicable).

This coming from someone who mostly plays on console, though I do have a PC I go to if I'm looking for pretty graphics or older games (might just start up some Fallout 2 or 3 to cure my desire for Fallout 4 news).
 
I might be missing the point of articles like these but why would you want a PC that matches the PS4. Isn't the whole point of going master race to have a better experience than you would on consoles?

Part of that "better experience" includes having unlimited BC and a wider choice on games, settings, and non-gaming software.

It isn't merely a fidelity thing (which is too often associated with the whole "master race" crap). Having entry level PCs have that choice is... just nice.

There is no singular main whole point of gaming on PC, you can build or buy whatever you want, that is the beauty of it.
If you have limited budget and are deciding what to get, alphaesqe PC can be a great choice.

The article was a budget PC guide, and graphics is not the only reason to own a PC, mods, control schemes, cheap games, things like that.
