PS4 performance on a ~£300 PC. Can it be done? (spoiler: yes)

Not everyone wants to play Witcher 3, dude...though this will play that too.

That rig is going to give you 1080p/60 on the majority of the most popular PC games today, from CS:Go to Hearthstone to League of Legends to BF4. Not to mention the thousands of other games, emulators, free online, best sales, games that will still work 4 hardware generations from now without rebuying and compatibility with your 360/PS3/PS4/Wii/One controllers and USB peripherals you already own.

And in the end, if a buyer decides they want to upgrade, they can move a rig like this into the bedroom for streaming or something and they get to experience the games they already own in much higher fidelity. No rebuying games for your new hardware like you must for consoles. For anyone who doesn't have a PC, the real question is why the hell not? Price shouldn't be stopping you, and the selection of PC exclusives really demands to be played as much as any other platform.

witcher 3 won't play on this rig, not well enough anyways, minspec is a 660, so maybe 15fps at 1080p on all lowest, if you are lucky.

I think it's time to put money avatar where my mouth is. If this rig runs The Witcher 3 and/or Arkham Knight at PS4 level I will where Knack avatar for one month.

There are tons of reasons why people might prefer gaming on consoles. Might be something as simple as their friends being on console. And it can be the cheapest way to game, with game rentals, second hand games, and sharing discs between friends. It really comes down to the person, what kind of equipment do they already have, how much time do they have, how many friends do they have in which ecosystem, what kind of games do they want to play. Doesn't require Stockholm syndrome or exceptional stupidity to own a console.

I completely agree with all your points. My response was to an idiot that posted a picture that you can see by clicking where I quoted. He implied that the reason a PS4 is the way to go is that it's smaller, and you can use a controller and that PCs are worse because they are larger and don't use controllers. Those are absolute nonsense reasons to go with one platform or the other, but all the points you made are completely valid and make sense. I totally agree with you.

Always find these articles interesting. I'm sure it could be done, but what's the point when PC gaming is about high performance and building for the future? Seems like you'll have to replace parts in this build very soon thus making the comparison useless. I'd just suggest someone use their laptop and save them the $400.

I hope they'll test GTAV on this machine, should be interesting. Or not work at all because the CPU is below minimum requirements.

~45 pounds for a case, power supply, mouse and keyboard. Huh. Are there reviews of the power supply? The case? My hands start bleeding just thinking of my last low budget case.

You can build a pc on PS4 performance levels, but it doesn't mean you should. I made the experience that a low budget PC is rather frustrating. I feel sorry for all the people building this or a similar PC.

I don't see why it wouldn't. Although I don't think there's a lod slider so PC might not be able to get down to console settings since it's supposedly about 1/2 that of the PC version.

I definitely think people shouldn't ignore exclusives when talking about these things.

I can see someone maybe wanting an entry level pc just for the exclusives, there are a lot of really popular games there like DotA 2, LoL, Civilization, etc. It would be really nice if they made a companion piece using this pc about how well it runs exclusive stuff. These games are meant to be scalable, so how much can you get away with on one of these entry level pcs on.

If we are just looking at a few of the games that released recently(past year or so), how well does it run stuff like:

-Cities: Skylines
-Total War: Atilla
-Grey Goo
-Assetto Corsa
-Company of Heroes 2: Ardennes Assault
-Legend of Grimrock 2
-Endless Legend
-Spintires
-Men of War Assault Squad 2
-Wargame: Red Dragon
-Age of Wonders 3
-Banished
-Might and Magic X: Legacy
this one had some performance problems in outside areas
-Insurgency
-The Sims 4
-Depth
-Pillars of Eternity
how much can I downsample?
-Offworld Trading Company

What about stuff that was released in early access that people might want to get into, but might not have very good performance because of how early the game is into development.
-Medieval Engineers
-Besiege
can get choppy for me if I use a shit ton of parts
-Grav
-Chaos Reborn
-Tabletop Simulator
-Mordheim: City of the Damned
-Fractured Space
-Clockwork Empires

What about stuff that is on pc, but isn't on console yet. Some people might have seen the games when they were recently announced for ports and want to play them now.
-Elite Dangerous
-The Talos Principle
-Divinity Original Sin
-Next Car Game: Wreckfest
devs said they were interested in porting
-Killing Floor 2
has a beta going, and is releasing in early access soon
-Vanishing of Ethan Carter
-Distance
-Wasteland 2
-Tropico 5

Starcraft 2 Legacy of the Void is in its beta now, how well does that run on this machine? What about stuff that was released on last gen console but not current gen ones like Grid Autosport? Of course I didn't include the glut of survival games like The Forest, Stranded Deep, Reign of Kings, Subnautica, Savage Lands, etc. How well does this thing run games that are built to last like mmos? I really think an article focusing on how this thing runs pc focused games/exclusives would be more interesting. They could even go back to some popular games people are still playing that were released before 2014.

To be literal point by point of graphics comparison really sidesteps the real issue of PCs.

The hassle of drivers and dealing with installation crap to try and make a game work. The onus of getting the game to work is on the console makers, where PC, you're left to fend for yourself. If you don't have adequate tech knowledge, you will be stuck not being able to play the game.

Are you stuck in the 90s or something?

Steps to getting a game work on PC (as someone who doesn't possess tech knowledge):

1. Install Steam
2. Download latest drivers for your Graphics Cards (you even get linked to the right website from within steam)
3. Buy game
4. ???
5. Profit
