You are misremembering.

I seriously feel like I'm taking crazy pills, why do so many people not remember the reaction to Ledger's joker reveal? It wasn't that long ago!

We've been talking about how excellent Ledger was for seven years. It's hard to remember the negative feelings that lasted only a few months from so long ago. But it was there. Hasn't anyone linked to the Ledger reveal thread?

I tried looking for the first reveal of Ledgers face but I can't find the thread. We've all seen the posts responding to Ledgers casting announcement already.

I'm going with this ain't the real Joker and that Leto plays a poser Joker and real-ass Joker. Only way it makes sense to me.

Real-ass Joker would have Batman tattoos. Because real-ass Joker is IN LOVE with Batman.

Isn't the Joker very theatrical and self aware?

Yes, and he expresses that with all his clown shit.

The thing is, Batman goes up against Superman in the upcoming film so I can't see this guy ever being a problem for Batman, but then again Suicide Squad takes place before Batman V Superman so who knows, maybe after all that shit he steps his game up and gets serious. Hard to say really how everything fits together, which makes all these movies seem weird. Batman V Superman is the bread and butter right? So you'd have to assume things like Suicide Squad are being made with that in mind, right? Like, Snyder gave the thumbs up? Or is that irrelevant? I have no idea...

It'd work if they dressed him like

Completely misremembering. The reaction was way more negative than this. The picture made it worse for some. Hell I wasnt even on GAF then but the sites I was on did not get better with the image. I think it only really got better after the news about his suicide broke tbh, which is kind of shit.

Well, I can't find the thread either, but you can see the early reaction to the official pics here:

And some of the later pics:

Not seeing what you're talking about, honestly.

This looks so bad. Holy shit. Maybe in a couple of years we'll look back at this initial reaction like we did with Heath Ledger and laugh at how wrong we were, but I doubt it.

I must, I wasn't referring to GAF as is didn't even know about it back then ha and I don't want to trudge back on my old forums do 2008.

Buuut anyway, I remember the thing that made it more positive was after the marketing campaign began and the trailer with his laugh came out

I'm all for a new take, but I'm having a hard time seeing how this Joker fits in with the current DCCU line.

Will withhold opinions until I see Leto in action.

Heath's death and legendary performance made many forget just how critical people were of not only his casting, but the way he looked as Joker. The scars and brooding tone of that first image sparked a lot of doubt and hate. I remember all of it.
I joked about a sexy Joker in another thread. Turns out they're actually kind of going in that direction, lol.

I like Leto as an actor, and based on the clips of the Joker voice he did at a show, I'm OK with this. It'll be interesting to see his version of the character.
I think this Joker's gonna be pretty versatile. The shirtless official pic reminds me of this.

He ends up killing that woman in that same room like it was nothing.

I think we've had enough 'fresh takes' on the joker. What about a back to the basics, traditional joker?

Yeah that's kind of how I feel, too. The mainstream hasn't seen a traditional Joker since the animated series in the 90's. I think it's time to go back to the classics a little bit.

The most troubling thing of all is that people seem to keep going back to All Star Batman and Robin for examples of this Joker in comic form.

You don't know comic book fans then. There's arguments about changes of comic book characters every time there's a switch of authors, none the less a switch of universes.

It's not because comic book fans hate change, it's just that there's going to be varying opinions about everything because that's how opinions work.

If this was the first time the Joker ever made an appearance in the history of the world, I can guarantee you there'd still be people saying he looks like angsty hot topic teen, and some people saying he looks cool and menacing. It's just insulting to assume every criticism comes from people afraid of change.

Actually, I know comic fans quite a bit. Generally, they are more accepting of changes that occur in alternate universes or what have you. Stuff like Superman: Red Son, Marvel Zombies, and Ultimate Marvel (when it started at least) were very popular and continue to be so despite being huge deviations from the norm. Reboots might raise fans' ire, but alternate tellings that do nothing to affect the precious CONTINUITY are usually okay.

You don't have to explain to me how opinions work. My comment came about because conversation folks in this thread and beyond were having saying how this Joker didn't fit their idea of the character. I was commenting on the fact that it seems the comics are allowed to explore new concepts or change up from established status quos from time to time but the films are expected to toe the line and do exactly what the comics did instead of, you know, just being considered their own thing.

its pretty remarkable how bad the damaged tattoo is. Just take that one tattoo away and everything honestly looks great. Theres alot of potential in that, but DAMAGED is killing me. Leto should be pretty good regardless.

I like the look, looks like he took a couple bat fists to the mouth. I'm assuming most of those tattoos will be covered up for a good portion of his screen time unless Joker likes walking around without a shirt.

This is a very animated facial expression with all his tats very visible. I can see him looking even better with a suit on and a different look.

The "damaged" tattoo is a bit much as it comes off as trying too hard.

Not what I expected. I'm still on board with Leto though.

Edit: I agree with some of the people saying that the 'damage' in the forehead is trying too hard, but isn't that the whole point of the Joker? He definitely tries to play up his insane persona schlock as much as possible. He's so delusional that I could see him doing something like that just to irk people. That Joker in the Batman cartoons definitely did stuff like that from time to time.

Eh, I'll wait to pass judgment. I thought Ledger looked bad as well initially.

Besides, they kind of have to go completely different for the design.

There's going to be a crow eating round up thread for the ages one day in the distant future

Probably by Lionel Mandrake

I'm glad I won't be in it

Nothing wrong with that. Since the series never finished, Joker was barely in it. But everything he did in that small sampling was great.
I think I prefer no tats too

Nope, it looks way better with the tats. Took me all of a couple minutes to start feeling this look. I can imagine where they're going with this.
