The Witcher 3 | Review Thread

I'm fairly surprised combat wasn't more divisive in reviews. I guess the world and quests make up for it. I'm getting a Persona 4 kind of vibe here where, individually, the parts aren't as good as the whole, but the whole package is so brilliant that it doesn't matter.

Whys that surprising? Most of the reviews says that its enjoyable, some go as far to call it excellent... so its not just a matter of "the combat is shitty but everything else makes up for it." Not to comparing them in terms of quality but just looking at videos of the Souls games you'd never know the combat is as good as it actually is. Likewise, the AC combat looks far better than it plays.

Holy moly, this looks fantastic.

Ugh, I swear, this past week has been dragging on and on forever. We're so close now.

You're talking to a guy that liked the combat in 2, so no need to get overly defensive here, buddy.

Hard to say, without knowing exactly what it is that turns you off about RPG's. Worst comes to worst you could always turn the difficulty way way down and probably ignore most of the complexities of the gameplay.

Oof. I suspect that even on "sneeze and they die" difficulty, this could be a monster so far as consuming your time goes. Estimates seem to be around
80+
hours to complete the main story?

Wow...that's plenty. But I can't get the game out off my head. Gonna pre-order and we'll see. Hope I'll like it. Thanks for your advice :)

I'd say your above response is much more "overly defensive" than anything I've said. All I did was offer a more rational explanation for your surprise based on what they've actually said. You are the one projecting how people should feel about the combat and imaging reasons why more reviews aren't complaining about it.

Also...

Why do some already have the game? Is it already released in certain territories?
couple major retailers in Germany got it a few days ago-smaller game shops all over EU have it-plus they aren't as strict with street dates as other regions.

that said a few local shops near me in Jersey have it in stock-so ymmv

Happy to hear this since I'll be playing on XB1, but I hope this doesn't start some parity/lazy dev bullshit.

Agreed. The game looks outstanding and sounds like it is truly going to be one to remember. I personally think everyone who was looking forward to it should be pleased, but that's just me and you certainly can't please everyone.

So what's the consensus on the fetch/mmo quests? I asked the same question for DA:I and the answer was "only a few" while the reality was more like shitloads. How does this game compare to DA:I in that respect?

Not really.

Basically, since the last game's combat was very, very divisive (some liked it, others didn't), I expected much the same in this game's combat. Some reviewers like it, others not so much, but it turns out there's less hubub than with 2. That said, just simply reading the reviews, I get a feeling that game has a lot of stuff that shines, so that if anyone doesn't like one part, they'll still like the whole package.

You really are one defensive dude.

They're alright if they're masked properly. However, if it's literally like most MMOs where there's zero purpose for doing the task, then they drive me nuts. Storyline can mask these for me if done well.

The latest update on review codes going out for PC is that it likely won't be until Monday or launch.

PS4 and Xbox One versions (previously only dev kit Xbox One units could get code) will be available BEFORE the PC copies get out there so we're still left waiting either way.

This is kind of odd, I think, but oh well.

Game is AMAZING. Played nonstop 11 hours. Completed every sidequest/contract/story mission in the starting area
White Orchard
.

This game feels just what I expected it to be.

The only problem I encountered is that the game crashes when I skip my turn in Gwent. Day 1 patched is installed. Its really annoying.

I've run into this bug too....everything else is great except for that strange crash. I'm playing the PS4 version.

Why are they so adamant about having the review copies of the PC version be the exact same version as the one that is going on sale on Tuesday? They've allowed the PS4 version to be reviewed on "unfinished" code (i.e. without the day 1 patch), so why would this be a problem for the PC version?

"PC review copy of Witcher 3 can be redeemed from GOG.com on 19th of May for 49.99"

Pretty much.

I have no idea. This is just what I am getting from the PR folks handling this.

Hopefully it's just that they want the reviews for the"best" version to be out on release date to add a further oomph to the release.

BnBBB and Death March.

I don't think anyone else gives a shit about the difficulties except me though. Can't believe no one knows any of the differences. It's quite amazing how uninformative reviews are.

I answered your question about difficulty setting differences in one of the threads :b

On BaBB & Death March, MC being notch harder than BaBB;
  • Less XP from quests
  • Less stats, e.g. HP, from leveling up
  • No HP regen through meditation
  • Enemies get tad more HP, become more aggressive and gain new moves
  • Greater emphasis on your gear and resources
  • Game is less generous with giving you markers to the map
That is what I remember from top of my head.

Thank you. I just hear different things. For instance I seen this post today :

I've checked footage out from the completion of one of the early side quests, twisted firestarter. One player was playing on Story and Sword difficulty, the other was playing on Blood and Broken Bones difficulty.

Both players earned 50 EXP for completing the side quest.

Maybe there is only lower EXP on Death March mode?

According to this person XP is the same when you complete quests.

I'm 100% going by what I have heard from mouth of devs in streams, interview etc. If what dev says and game actually does are different things then I don't know what to say.

My assumption is that given the whole (mostly) DRM-free nature of the game, they're just trying to do everything they can to eliminate Day 0 piracy. That's the same reason for the activation patch. One reviewer or person with a copy purchased before street date uploads it to the internet and anyone would be able to download and install.

At least, that's my assumption. It's not like I know anything for sure.

if you think performance in that video look identical then good for you... but factually speaking, it isnt.

Edit*
Nevermind I see there's a topic for the video, I'll check in there to see where all the framedrops are. Was definitely payin attention to ps4 version more since that's what I'm going with.

Well since combat rewards no xp and its limited to quests. If you're rewarded less on higher difficulties you will never reach higher levels.

You wondered why reviews aren't more divided and I gave you a reasonable explanation... because more of them enjoyed the combat. I haven't added any qualitative statements about how the game plays nor have I dreamt up some conjecture to explain how others feel -- I'm just relaying what they have actually said. Frankly, I don't know how I feel about the game's combat and I won't know until I've played it myself.

Few days ago there was some France, or was it Italian, site streaming PC version so some copies are out there and playable.

Assuming there is only enough quests to max out when playing on e.g. normal. Based on reviews and some dev interviews it sounds like that there is more than enough to content go around for you to max out.

That said there is unhealthy amount of conflicting information floating around. CDPR could have done better job at telling people about 100% correct differences between difficulty settings.

Guys, just watch this:

More pictures

They are 5K by the way.

Man this game desperately needs some character model tessellation and skin shaders, because honestly, most of those shots look last gen. Draw distance and resolution are obviously great though.

Still not going to take my enjoyment out of the game, I think I'll do like 24 hour marathon of it the first day lol.
