Even beyond that, revenues from sales are split with retailers. You'd hope "number of copies sold X price" math would stay in a forum posts and YouTube comments, not be something a producer at IGN resorts to using.

When a gaming site that's supposed to be credible reports on it based off a youtube video. I can't blame people for getting excited and wanting to post about.

But this is why gaming media is just not very credible. They watched a youtube video that we can all watch and posted an article about it. Not even bothering to confirm or talk to the parties involved.
