Splatoon |OT| Squidstyler

I've only played single player so far (just the first 6 levels) but this game is incredible. Finally starting to get used to the gyro I think.

How daunting is multiplayer? Games like CoD stress me out because I'm always dying and hurting my team.

Do gear abilities stack?

Like, having 3 speed up slots?

I don't know. People have said that something like 3 def up ones stack (1 per clothing, no stacking when on the same clothing piece) but the Cat says that it's not a good idea to stack the same thing but maybe he means it's not 1x, 2x, 3x effects?

Said the guy who thinks Splatoon is gonna bomb.

Anyway, it's a new IP from Nintendo EAD. The last time we got one of those was with Pikmin, & obviously we got Olimar in Brawl. He probably would have been in Melee if DLC was a thing back then. We're gonna get playable Inklings, either by Sakurai's own decree, the ballot, or a Nintendo mandate.
It took three games for Villager to finally get in. We may get Inkling eventually, but that's only I Splatoon does well, and even then it might not be for a while.

Well just paint the ground and you'll be fine. You are almost always helping your team by doing that.

Yes, stacked abilities diminish.

That's quite a thing to say, do you really think Nintendo left out some coding tweaks that could double the framerate in 2 player mode without notable graphical downgrades?

Maybe the game only being 10% done at last year's E3 has something to do with it, I'd imagine split screen was an after thought

Barely made it to rank 4 earlier in the morning today and all I can think of is how I just want to binge on this game until I get to some high level asap. I want cool stuff already. :lol

I could see the Inklings having projectiles as their A moves like Mega Man (Splattershot Jr. jabs, Splattershot tilts, Splat Charger Side Smash, Ink Roller Down Smash, etc.). From there you can use the Squid as a Side B to swim through the ink (you'd use the Squid as an Up B for the Super Jump, but that's work no matter what). Normal B throws an Ink Bomb, & Down B would either leave a mine or send a tracer bomb.

Though there is the question of if the 3DS can handle this.

I feel like there's enough there to make very full (re: Dante in MVC3) move sets with the characters, but the one thing I want most is for the ability to strafe while firing ink as long as B is held. I did one on Smashboards a while back, but out of respect to the Splatoon thread, I'm not going much further than this here.

Gearsfan14 for those that wanna play, I've got like no friends on my Wii u. I should really play smash and kart more too

Does the game automatically team you with friends? I keep seeing my friends pop up in matches with me, which is pretty cool.

If anyone wants to add me, my NNID is gummby

They do stack, but there seems to be caps and stuff. And it seems the abilities highlighted in red are the only ones that can be gotten as sub-abilities.

The ones that can't seem to be tied to specific types of gear.
Headgear: Opening Gambit, Last-Ditch Effort, Tenacity, Comeback
Clothing: Cold Blooded, Ninja Squid, Haunt, Recon
Shoes: Bomb Sniffer, Ink Resistance Up, Stealth Jump
I hated the mall at first, but now it's my favourite map. In the last few games I realised how important those narrow side-paths were, since you can easily sneak behind your enemies and either take them out from behind, or start taking over their territory. I've won most of recent games in the Mall doing that
You still have to go through the main choke point to go through the narrow pathways.

OMG I've been on this wait screen sooooo long. The timer keeps resetting. Squid Jump isn't that exciting.

Edit: Nintendo I would pay you money to put Donkey Kong on this wait screen.

It took two Animal Crossing games for that series to get its own stage, though. Sakurai was ruling out Villager because of perceived shortcomings as a fighter, not because the series wasn't around long enough.

For an additional counterpoint, it took one game (and the announcement of a sequel and a remake, true) for Shulk to get in.

The same for me. I disliked the mall at first, but once I learned the maps and some techniques to use, it's a really great map.

I played a match on the mall where the map got "reversed". All eight sneaked behind and painted the enemy territory. Quite fun!

The Battle Dojo is a 2 player local game, its there. 1 Person uses the gamepad the other the TV with a controller.

Thanks! And if memory serves me well, only the Pro Controller controllers from both Wii U and Wii are compatible right, no Wii Remotes + nunchucks?

Every weapon provides very different gameplay - enjoying rolling for the first time

Just got my first 1st place with roller 7 - 3 and 1.3k points

How are you guys liking the maps? Me and a buddy are debating getting this but all the maps except for the skate park look pretty narrow and like they would get repetitive REALLY fast.

Skate park is actually my least favorite, it's not bad though. But I like defending the choke points.

The maps are good but don't really feel repetitive really at least in my opinion, since the real maps are how the paint itself is laid as that decides where you can go without getting hurt and how fast you can travel

Don't currently have any "bad" stages, but Arowana Mall, Blackbelly Skatepark, Urchin Underpass are the current standouts for me with Walleye Warehouse almost getting into this group. Saltspray Rig is pretty cool but something is missing to put it over any of the other 4.

Depending of your play style and teammates each maps have its strength and flaws.

The skate part is the worst map by far imo. The others are fine.

The point is that it's not a guarantee they'll be in the next one :)

This is so stupid, is there no way to quit out of these screens?

Hmm good to know about the maps. Now I also read we would get a new free map every other week this summer??? That seems like a lot of maps...

Dude Saltspray Rig is incredible

Really enjoying them - very much working out new tactics, particularly when using different weapons.

Saw a level 20 last night.

Japan seem to have got it 1 day early (retail version not online)

Yup, here's the video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjQJXD-wCuo
For example : if I counted right, there will be like 9 new maps but only 3 seems finished for now since they had a screenshot.

And here the resume
Throughout the summer, Nintendo will release new stages, weapons, gear and battle modes. In August, a Splatoon update will bring four-person online teams in Turf War mode, four-versus-four custom battles on any stage with any rules, as well as a new battle mode and gear. Press play below to watch a few minutes of the presentation that reveals the new features.

Personally, I could play on the same maps all the time. (Well, almost.) Since the teams shuffles and the map repaints all the time, I can't see anything repetitive there. The only repetitive I see is players who are more interested in kills than painting, it's annoying when such players are in the group.

My 8 year old cousin said after 5 minutes playing that this is the best game ever and that he needs it on his own Wii U.

He also said that I'm a cheater because I look up where the scrolls are hidden. He's probably right.

Completed
15
level so far and I'm having an absolute blast with it. Can't wait to jump to the multiplayer.

Surprised you guys are down on skatepark, controlling that middle ramp must feel great.

While controlling the middle spire is important, the area you can cover with paint from there is somewhat limited so if you are just hanging out there the whole match you aren't really helping after a point.
