Wait a second... Who's buying all that DLC?

Srs question.

Loads of people here on GAF are disgusted by day1 DLC, Season Passes, and DLC in general. It's a discussion point in nearly every thread.
Even outside GAF the disgust of DLC is real, look at the Final Bosman for instance.

My question is, how many of you are actually buying it? They keep selling it so it must be working.

I myself have never bought any. Nobody I know IRL buys DLC either? (EU)
So I though maybe it's a US thing? Like pre-order bonusses @ Gamestop etc?

EDIT: always amazes me how GAF jumps so conclusions; Bold text incoming.

I am aware that GAF does not equal the entire gaming community of the world.
That's why I mentioned that even outside of GAF people have this sentiment.
Also, if most of GAF has this feeling its safe to assume that a majority on other gaming boards have the same feeling, and therefor a lot of people have the same feeling about DLC

GAF, or even dedicated gaming websites, don't necessarily represent the majority of casual consumers.

I haven't bought any season pass other than the Mario Kart 8 one since it did DLC fairly well.

WAY more people buy DLC than post here on GAF.

Ummm...gaf isn't the whole community....its the coolest! But not nearly enough of a percentage to represent what you're talking about.

And some DLC is reaaaally good. If you haven't treated yourself to the MK8 DLC then you haven't lived my friend...

The disgust for DLC is a vocal minority.
Casual players will gladly open their wallets for any and all DLC/Season Passes/Other Insanity that comes their way.

There are people that will gladly pay $40 for the Arkham Knight season pass on top of the $60 game, instead of doing the sensible thing of waiting for the GOTY edition.

I buy DLC if i get something for my money, like with Undead Nightmare for RDR or The Witcher 3 Expansion Pass with multiple hours of gameplay. I wouldn't buy things like horse armor (lol) or something like that.

I buy DLC all the time and if there's a season pass available for a game I'll more than likely get it. Sorry for ruining gaming, folks.

I think call of duty normalized it, people would pay the extra 20bucks for hardened edition.
now every game comes with a dlc deluxe edition

There is plenty of DLC that is entirely worthwhile. Undead Nightmare for RDR for example. There are many more. I've bought ones that have interested for many many different games. I know there is a stigma against it, but it's my damn money, I'll do what I please with it.

I only buy season passes when I know I'll put hours into a game. For example I bought the Premium Pass for BF4 and I know I got my moneys worth out of it.

I've bought plenty of DLC.

Off the top of my head, I've bought the expansions for XCom, Civ V, Fallout 3 & New Vegas, Borderlands 2, Skyrim, and Mario Kart 8. I never buy microtransactions or cosmetic items, but if there's worthwhile content for games that I spend a lot of time with, I'll buy it.

I bought the Dragon Age DLC just recently. I honestly find nothing wrong with DLC when it's done right and feel it's an amazing way to extend the life of a game you love.

I've also bought most of the Borderlands DLC as well.

I'm in Australia. I very, very rarely buy DLC. Despite being on GAF, I'm definitely a "casual" nowadays.

Only one person I know will actually routinely flesh out for DLC

I'm pulling this out of my ass but I'd say "people on gaf", "people who watch final bosman", and "people who associate with the former two" combined represent about 5% or less of the people who play games

Around here people tend to have huge libraries of games and buying DLC and season passes for all of them wouldn’t really be feasible.

If you only buy a few big games a year then I guess it makes a lot more sense to buy DLC for them.

Last piece of DLC I bought was... Mario Kart 8's two content packs. Before that... do Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition or Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen count?

I bought a few skins on League of Legends a few years back...

Even when I was really into Call of Duty, I never once bought a season pass for it. I bought the season pass for both Borderlands, because frankly it has good, full-featured DLC. I bought the expansion for Oblivion, shimmering isles, because it was good, full-featured DLC. Other than that, I very very rarely buy DLC. So i have no idea who buys DLC Op.

GAF is a tiny bubble. We don't represent anything remotely resembling the mainstream.

Exactly, which is often what people forget.

Look at the disgust with call of duty on Internet forums, look at call of duty sales...each year.

The majority of gamers don't sit and post on forums. People like us are a minority, in the same way people that post on a forum like avsforums and discuss calibration etc are a minority.

The average person buys a TV, puts it into vivid/dynamic and burns their retinas away with hours of TV (often not even high definition).

The average gamer walks into game/GameStop buys whatever console their friends have and buys a copy of FIFA, call of duty, Assasins creed and calls it a day.

I'm sure there are a lot of people on this site that do buy DLC. Its just framed as "man I'm such a huge fan of the series I'm definitely gonna buy this but act sad about it :("

Never.

I'll wait for a GOTY edition like Bethesda tends to do, or a Complete Edition like Rockstar has done in the past. Otherwise, I pass on the DLC altogether. Not a fan of digital only content.

I bought the Bioshock Infinite Season Pass a few weeks ago for 9,99€.

But I would never buy a Season Pass if nothing is known about the upcoming content.

GAF, or even dedicated gaming websites, don't necessarily represent the majority of casual consumers.

I haven't bought any season pass other than the Mario Kart 8 one since it did DLC fairly well.

I bought the MK8 DLC as well, mostly because of how much it added.

But the implementation was shoddy. Reserving space on every screen leading up to the actual gameplay with big ?'s is the wrong way to do it. That's "Press X to unlock Goro" and being led to a checkout level of wrong.

The least intrusive way of DLC to exist is it being apparent once (on the title screen, preferably) and then responsively added to UI's as you acquire them, so you don't feel like you're constantly playing a half-opened product.

There wasn't enough indignation at Shadow of Mordor's DLC. If you didn't get the season pass you were locked out of on-disc/at-launch content, which were entire game modes. So without throwing another 20-30 dollars at the game you could only play the story mode. Super lame.

I buy DLC all the time. Never had a problem with it. I don't buy season passes though(only because I rather pay only for content I want).

I'm not a big CoD fan but you are telling me that you don't know any CoD fans that eat that stuff up.

I think it's more the vocal minority that you are hearing. Everyone else probably is indifferent to DLC.

Bought the Drive Club Season pass not long ago. Also bought the Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors pass. If I like what they give me in the DLC I buy it, pretty much as simple as that.

According to my budget, I've spent $17 dollars on DLC this year. I have no issue with DLC as a whole, I only take issue with how some DLC is handled. What I take issue with I don't buy, and I don't have the mindset that I need to have all the DLC a game releases.

Depends on which kind of DLC.

If it's just weapon packs, then I don't care.

But if it's expansion DLC, I'll gladly buy it. For example, Left Behind for TLOU, bought it day 1.

But I understand some really buys DLC just to get an advantage. It's no different from f2p mmo or mobile games. If it makes you enjoy the game, then why not?

There's been an entire generation of video game consumers that was conditioned to accept DLC. The DLC generation was the first generation of console games for some; it's what they know. It's the new normal, and those of us in the minority who don't approve of it and complain about it are basically yelling at clouds. We're the old people telling kids to get off of our lawns when we get upset about DLC, Season Passes, retailer-specific DLC, and so on.

Ask people who work in gaming retail about who buys DLC. It's a lot of people-- even some here on GAF. Consumers already voted with their wallets and said that all of these things are okay, despite what we may choose to believe.

If I really like a game or if my friends are playing a certain mode I can't access. I might splurge on DLC. See: like a zombie mode or some such. I have friends who are crazy for that, so sometimes I just give in.

Most of the time though, I just wait for sales...

GAF represents an insignificant portion of the global gaming populace. One that, as a whole, has very different tastes than the mainstream, and has more insight into the working and value of games in general. And for those gaffers that do buy DLC, I'm sure many of them don't even dare admit it publicly here considering how strong the anti-DLC sentiment is.

I've bought DLC, but only DLC that I felt was really good value. Like the Mario Kart 8 DLC, Rock Band songs, etc.

I'm not disgusted by it at all. It's game content that I can either decide to buy or not, and I can't exactly blame game companies for trying to find other ways to make money in an industry where it can be quite difficult to do so. There are of course scummy ways to do DLC and A-okay ways to do DLC, but that's about in line with any business practice.

This is a case of bad examples leading to more vocal opposition than good examples leading to praise. Left Behind is great, but how often is the praise framed in terms of "this is why DLC is good?" Mass Effect 3's multiplayer was/is extremely popular, but it's rarely brought up that part of this was how fair the microtransactions schemes were; buying with real money would certainly let you progress faster, but it was easy and pleasant to play the MP for months on end without spending a dime and without feeling like your progression was being hindered.

It says there are 154,987 members on this forums, dont know if thats active users online or the overall members. How many people are in the world? How many of them play games?

I buy DLC based on what is being offered and if its worth my money. Multiplayer map packs aren't worth my money. I was gonna buy the batman arkham knight but the season pass being priced close to the actual game, i cancelled it and will wait for GOTY edition.

I don't think GAF is anymore anti-DLC/season pass/etc than the general gaming community. There are tons of threads with people bitching about how horrible this season pass was or "I wasted my money on that!" or "I should have waited.... no more day 1 AAA crap!"

... yet they still buy them.
