I know I can search about this on google but I'd rather hear it from a fan.

I have never played Shenmue nor seen gameplay videos. What's all this about? Is it an rpg, action adventure, survival horror? What's so special about this series? Are they long games or short games?
imagine a third person adventure game, with virtua fighter combat, and light rpg mechanics

the games have a 5-6 in-game month timer. if you can't complete it within that, you get the bad end. really though, they're as long as you want them to be. you can goof off for days at a time playing arcade games, or you can get straight into the game's story and side content.

You $30 peasants are gonna feel real sore when us $100+ royalty are playing that trial version.

Wasn't really clear on what the trial was so went with the peasent tier. Thought it might be a demo you can give away they key too. Also wording made it seem like the trial version was only received if you opt for the PC version. I am fine playing the trial PC version then playing on my preferred option of PS4 (although I might be back to preferring PC by the time it comes out if I upgrade). Might up my backing.

Honestly the graphics don't matter to me. Not sure on external funding but at this point I am hoping for a continuation of story and gameplay - I can deal with DC/PS2 class assets running at high res with AA if that is all the budget will allow.

Edit: Upped to 100 tier. If enough people back in this tier the credits could be even longer than a Ubi game. Imagine.

How do they propose to make an HD open world game for 2 millions ? Sleeping dogs budget was easily 10 times that. GTA is around 100 millions. Is it going to be episodic ?

I can't be the only one thinking that begging fans for money on the stage of a multimillion corporation is a bit fucked...

Look at this way. Everyone who backed this game, they ALREADY BOUGHT a game. Somebody pay less for physical/digital game, somebody more for limited edtition, somebody way more for limited edition + lunch with Yu Suzuki. You see, for me it's the same shit if 30 000 people buy game at launch or buy a game via Kickstarter funding.

This Kickstarter is nothing more than a gauge for interest
Funding it means Sony will actually put money towards the game

I hope the trial is like "What's Shenmue?" was for the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4B4SrK-uoNA

Holy hell, when I pledged last night it was just over 1 million, having gotten there just a few hours after the show. Now I wake up today and it's already funded!!!!!

This is either an awesome lovely day or it's all just a dream, I'm still not entirely sure.....

It still hasn't sunk in yet: Shenmue III is now a reality. It's happening. I OWN IT. SON OF A BITCH.....

It's an action-RPG. You're trying to avenge your father's death. Along the way, you're finding clues while exploring an immensely detailed world. Everything about the world is painstakingly crafted: NPCs all have set schedules, there's a day/night cycle that they actually follow, interiors are all custom-crafted. There's an authentic arcade you can visit filled with old Sega games. It's about as close to exploring 1980s Japan as you can get. This might sound like a lot of open-world games today, but the way it's all brought together is truly unlike anything else.

You can also do side jobs, like driving a forklift or running a gambling stand.

When it comes time to fight, you're basically playing Virtua Fighter-lite. There are special moves to learn through training. It's a really fun combat system and unlike other RPGs.

What's really special about Shenmue is the minutiae. You can interact with all sorts of things around you, even if it's bullshit like picking up a cup and spinning it around in your hand or taking a picture off the wall. There's this incredible sense of presence that you just don't get from other games.

I threw in $30. This is the 2nd Kickstarter I've ever backed (the first being Amplitude). Can't wait to play it in a few years!! Now I need to dust off the Dreamcast and Xbox and replay both of them as a refresher.

Seems to be ignored by many. Looks like Ryo will have his original voice. Makes you wonder why they didn't use him (or Japanese voice acting in general) for the pitch video.

Not even a day goes by and its funded. The thirst is real. I hope they get so much demand from this they will do the first 2 games too.

costs money, pretty much

everything in that pitch video was placeholder anyway, it was a retooled sequence from shenmue 2

So, indie figurines instead sega's?

Sega owns Shenmue and will legally be a part of this, one way or another.

The most likely scenario is that Sony has bought themselves a one-time license to create a Shenmue title, and are using Kickstarter to partly offset development costs. So we'll probably get in-game Sega toys and hopefully some arcade games too.

There's no doubt a lot to this deal that we're not being told, but the Kickstarter romanticism of 'gamers getting games made' is absolutely going to work in Shenmue III's favour, so I don't blame them for doing it.

PC version will have mods for years to come. And someone will inevitably patch in VR support. Plus, better graphics.

Be funny if this game is a massive success and SEGA then commissions and publishes Shenmue 4.

Pipe dream but so was Shenmue 3.

I don't believe it. It actually hit the goal in record time! I hope the UE4 gives them the necessary tools make the scope as they possibly need - without the restrictions imposed by the original DC's power and media.

The dream is alive <3 I hope they release 1&2 HD versions cause my DC isn't working very well.

I sure hope so. Never played 1 even though I had a DC and was looking forward to release. Remember asking about it a few times at the local Electronics Boutique (EB Games now). Ended up getting 2 on Xbox after my time away from gaming after the DC died, which came with the Shenmue movie of the cutscenes from the first.

Would love something even of similar quality of the other DC -> PC ports.

dec. 2017 !!! O_o

I'm happy to see that the game will come but it's too far from now to expect anything than just a "ok good" from me.

Also KS is a bad way of doing this. With KS, you just have cash to make a product with no commitment regarding its quality. Shenmue is very special to me so even if I trust Yu Suzuki I'm not sure the spirit of the two first games will be preserved.

I'm not giving sorry Ryo :'(

See you in 2017, if it's what I have in mind at this time.

Edit: post was in the "KS record thread", better here.

Its funded !! There was enough interest for this (no surprise) and now I believe Sony will cover the rest of the funding for the project.

I really like what Sony did with this, use the kickstarter to gauge the interest in an IP and if its funded, Sony jumps in and funds the rest. Smart move.

This could be a smart way to bring back older ips, I would like to see a return of action adventure platformers from gen 5/6

Isn't 2kk a bit low for an AAA game? Is Sony founding the rest or some different party?

They are. Kickstarter is just tip, proably for marketing, feelings, fan support for Yu and stuff.

It would be perfect overkill if they presented it without kickstarter but come on - it is still super awesome (and awesome conference overall).

Is there a reason for this not being on Xbox? Its a kickstarter campaign, isn't it?

Supposing that Sony isn't funding it, perhaps they just didn't want to stretch themselves too thin because they weren't sure the campaign would be such a success. I imagine we'll see an Xbox One stretch goal soon unless Sony is involved.

Someone, like Sony, might have agreed to cover the rest beyond the kickstarter total that shows interest.

There is no way that 2 million is the full budget for the game. Wouldn't be surprised if Sony will be funding part of it.

They are not - they even indicated as much before announcing it saying "this is very much their project, but we wanted to show it off on our stage". On top of that Sony are not listed as a sponsor at the end of the trailer with the others involved
