Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

What they are doing is taking the executable, the emulator and the emulator config and bundling them. The actual game is still in it's same state and does not change. From game to game they may make modification to the emulator config but that's it.

It's somewhat like images on a webpage. You don't need to re-compose them, rather just include them.

According to Phil they actually don't individually change the emulator for each game. Anything tweaks or changes they do with it is universal to the emulation of all 360 games.

Considering the whole emu/VM is package with each individual title, wouldn't this essentially require an update on every 360 game if any significant changes are made?

Once this really gets rolling, I hope they open a 360 storefront on the Bone.

So much this. I can jump on my 360 and buy stuff I suppose, but having it all from the XB1 would be really cool. Honestly, I haven't even looked at 360 game prices in almost 2 years. Maybe I should take the BC list downstairs with me and check out the marketplace.

I just remembered I have a drawer filled to the brim with Xbox 360 games that I had forgotten about now that I've gone full current gen and gave most away to friends and family.

But I still have a copy of Splinter Cell: Blacklist :)

Really jazzed about backwards compatibility, and I think it just made the idea of picking up an Xbone a lot easier for my friends on the fence. The value proposition has completely changed for the better, big time.

I just hope Games with Gold 360 titles are playable on the bone moving forward.

I wonder if in the final release they will separate the VM so that you only need to download/update it once. I have ~2TB of space available so I'm not in jeopardy of running out anytime soon, but adding ~500MB to each game for the VM could be increasingly wasteful once the library fills out. Not to mention bandwidth.

I'm not sure there's a way for the Xbox One to load a single emu, but still differentiate the games at an OS level. When you play different games it says you're playing that game rather than "Xbox 360 emulator". It's pretty important as each game has it's own hub, and screenshots, videos, broadcasts etc.

i wouldnt be surprised if they're downplaying the amount of games they'll have for fall and ends up being closer to 200+-300+ BC titles. Emulation seems very good so far

Yeah, that's true. Might be no way around it. Oh well, I don't plan to download EVERY game in my library anyways.

Actually, now that SMB is here I'll probably not pick it up for the Vita like I was planning to.

Aim high, shoot low. Best thing for this rollout.

It already got MS a purchase. I just bought my 3rd copy of Mass Effect because I am impatient.

(Bought a digital copy for $20, because I would be able to install it even though I am not in the preview program)

It works great. The only hangups will be licensing issues or publishers blocking games. They can't do Kinect or peripheral games either.

I wonder if they'd even want to just dump that many games onto the marketplace at once. Frequent rollouts might be the way they do it regardless.

or publishers blocking games.
I just can't see why they would do that.

a) they might get a couple of new sales

b) the bad press for blocking the games

I doubt even a HD remaster would be affected that much. (In fact it would force a "remaster" to actually add value, to make customers make the purchase)

b) the bad press for blocking the games

Unfortunately, they may not have much to worry about with this one. There's a good chance MS won't throw any of them under the bus by declaring the game as "blocked" and it'll just sit on the feedback pile indefinitely.

Like with the pre-180 DRM stuff.. you think that wasn't something many publishers were pushing for (I mean, look at some of the measure attempted last gen to curb resales)? However when all the backlash came, they all turned into Justin Timberlake after the Superbowl.

I can't see publishers giving a crap

You still have to own the game. Its not like MS is giving away the 360 library

Now, it may be the Publishers will use it as a "bonus". ie Fallout 4 comes with the 360 version of Fallout 3

Might see more of that stuff

It might have been a "locked" save by the developer. It is an option that devs could do, but few did.

Yea, Team Ninja used to pull that often. Although I'd assume if it were a locked save, he wouldn't have been able to move the save to the cloud in the first place right?

Yea, I don't see much reason for games to be declined. Especially once you're able to purchase them (and their fixed price DLC) via the Xbox One. I was just saying how I don't think fear of bad press is something that they'd worry about.

Is that Splinter Cell Blacklist that I see there? That'd make my day.

So have there been a ny new news or updates about bc games coming out soon?

We really need the OP to be updated with new information and games if they've been released.

Interested to hear if this works for anyone else that isn't in the preview program (and apologies if it has been reported, haven't seen it anywhere yet).

Note: I've asked for an invite in the preview thread, but haven't yet received a message or app to join the xbox one preview program.

I was able to access the BC 360 games on my Xbox One by doing the following:

1. Find a user who has played a BC 360 game on their XB1 (Major Nelson has Mass Effect in his list for example).
2. Make sure you are following them as a friend.
3. Go to your Friends tab on the xbox one dash and go to the 'Popular with friends' section
4. Find the 360 game and click into it
5. You should then have view in store, install etc options

This has worked for me for Hexic HD, Perfect Dark and Mass Effect (all digitally purchased previously)

Just tried it with Hexic HD. Doesn't work anymore.

No real news on what the next games will be. The image used for advertisement included a bunch of new titles, though, so we're expecting those next.

I suppose the chance of Operation Darkness being supported is pretty much zero. Pretty sure i'm the one of like 3 people in the world that liked that game.

Oh! Culdcept Saga would be rad.

I hope this feature improves the load times for Bethesda games.

Have they mentioned any performance improvements? I only remember them showing off sceenshots and game DVR and online play across Xbone and Xbox 360 (very nice).

But anything specific about load times or extra AA or resolution bumps or anything?

Just a theory but would Microsoft cease making Xbox 360 consoles when the backwards compatibility feature is officially rolled out later this year?

Makes sense if they want to cut costs.

Browse to xbox.com on the xbox one to buy 360 games. Simple.

Yep, for now that's a good solution. Although I almost guarantee there will be a 360 store section on the One when this is available publicly.

For now, you can use this link on IE for Xbox One: http://marketplace.xbox.com/Games/Xbox360Games

It's basically a 360.

Yeah, I think this is the thing that people are really getting hung up on. You are running a full 360 (minus the home screen dashboard) when you run a 360 game. This is full emulation of the complete 360 hardware through and through. Your games then run on that "virtual" 360 - no recompile, no porting, nothing. It IS the same exact game running on a full Xbox 360 for all intents and purposes - as if you had plugged in a 360 into the HDMI-IN port on your Xbox One. In fact, even better than that since it also supports all the Xbox One functions as well over top. It's brilliant.

The game is running as it would on a 360 - it even thinks it's running on a 360. So there's no resolution bumps or AA. Some people say the scaler is better than the 360 scaler though. I think the loading time and texture load performance improvements we're seeing are due to the faster I/O if the Xbox One.
