Bungie defends Destiny: The Taken King's £/$40 price tag (Eurogamer)

"We've set some stuff aside for that edition specifically to really make it appeal to fans who have engaged with the game already"

Translation: We've put a tiny bit of content in this package so that our hardcore fans will want to spend more money on this game or feel that they're being left out of things in this game that is all about collecting things.

Fuck. That.

Just sad.

This isn't the first time Destiny has had Collector's Edition exclusives:

My god, look at that amazing content I've missed out on. The horror.

My god, look at how you've missed the point entirely.

The issue isn't that there's CE exclusive content. It's that the CE has current players buying Year 1 content again, and no exceptions.

Sure, even the more notable TTK exclusive stuff isn't that big of a deal in the great scheme of things, but it's still a shitty way to handle it. Especially when combined with the GameStop/GAME exclusivity.

Lol coming from the right guy Juices, mr arm chair dev himself.

It is not even about the amount, it is about the reasoning and points they are trying to make and Luke being a complete idiot in this interview.

not Luke but plays with him sometimes.

Juices has never played Destiny with Luke, lol. Calling someone a fucking idiot over decisions you know are probably out of their hands is real mature though.

Wow. Some of those responses are...meh. Whatever...I just got Batman and FFXIV Heavensward. Think I'm going to wait on Taken till after I'm done with Battlefront and Uncharted....

Meanwhile at 343, free DLC for everyone.

Shame to see Bungie sink this low. Everyone used to love them.

And again, if the first year of Destiny is anything to go by, we'll see two more DLC expansions which will include new strikes and story missions, but they'll take place in areas we've already been through dozens of times, only backwards. One new destination doesn't seem like nearly enough for that. It wasn't enough for the base game with its four destinations.

Unless we should expect something very different for year two...

Some missions are based on Venus (and probably mars) outside that phobos should be HUGE to keep the chain quest going.

Blizzard and Activision are the same company.

Yet it surprised me Blizzard didnt help them to do better raid mechanics

A leak suggests Saturn is playable also.

Saturn
Phobos
Oryx's Dreadnaught

But to what extent they are playable is unconfirmed.

You are completely missing the point. The main take homes are

New players are getting exclusive content instead of the legacy players.
If you want the new content the only way is to buy the existing content again.

That new exclusive content also offers increased XP gain. Which is beyond just cosmetic.

I remember when a leak said Saturn was playable in the base game. Venus and Jupiter I think were in there as well. Obviously that was inaccurate.

I don't really have too much of an issue with the price, considering how much time I put into the game and both DLCs, my one gripe comes with the exclusive Taken King CE items.

So even though I've played the game since launch, own the original Collector's Edition and both The Dark Below and House of Wolves additions, you're telling me that I can't get those new exclusive items unless I purchase The Taken King Collector's Edition, which forces me to rebuy everything I already own since it comes with the base game and both DLCs, for $80, right?

Wut?

Do they not see how they're current and already invested fans would be a just a little upset, even over some stupid exclusive emotes and class times?

I mean, Destiny has always kind of felt like bad value. Those expansions were pretty meager, all told, so something like this doesn't surprise me all that much.

I'd be sort of okay with this if Bungie planned to give something else to long time players or at least discount the expansion for people who bought the last two and reached 34, but we're just getting dumb instant access stuff that'll eventually be available to everyone, which the dance emotes and collector's edition exclusives aren't. $60 for everything that your loyal players pay/paid $140 for?

That's bullshit.

Now excuse me while I go grind for a Gjallahorn so I could be ready for TKK!

Why are they not going all in with microtransactions i ask?
The game seems a perfect fit with all the currencies it has, and it is cleary targeted to a completionist audience.
Maybe is it the fear to burn too bright?

Would love to see a Destiny with a ftp elements, just to see how the market would react.

The first 2 expansions were completely overpriced for the amount of content they brought. I don't doubt this will be any different.

As a huge Destiny player since the Alpha, it does upset me that they won't offer those extras for us day 1 players without buying the game + 2 DLC that we already own. I can't support that. Definitely not buying the CE.

Bungie took a few steps forward with their progress as of late, and a few steps back with this, imo. All day 1 players want is to be rewarded with THE Ability to purchase the extras! How hard is that? I'm not even saying to give it to us for free. We are willing to PAY for it!

Fuck that. I'm at the point where I'd probably cave and throw some money at the game to finally get a Gjallarhorn after 1000 hours and I'm glad I don't have that option. Microtransactions would make me stop playing the game. It would ruin the loot system which already needs some work.

Jason Kidd murdered my dog in cold blood!
Bungie shitting on the players. I, for one, am totally shocked. Never saw this coming.

As someone that played Destiny at launch, had a good time for 40 hours and got to level 22, and then stopped and never played it again....

This is all kind of confusing. I was actually willing to jump back in to Destiny with this new expansions pack, if it really is that big, and worth the cost. If there was a decent amount of content, and it was fun. etc.

But just reading everyone's negative reactions, and also how off putting some of the messaging was in this interview. It just sounds completely absurd to lock away emotes behind an edition that would require Day 1 players to re-buy the game again to access. The fuck?

Destiny (and its two DLC packs) is already a $100 game, and its on its way to becoming a $140 game. Not sure how microtransactions would help anything, though you aren't alone in noticing all the free-to-play-ish elements.

I was chatting with a friend about my ongoing love-hate relationship with Destiny, and realized if the base game had been the content of both expansions included I would have zero issues shelling out $40 (or... $60 or whatever the fuck they will attempt here in Canada) for this expansion.

As it stands... I really just don't know.

But that is basically what Luke said. When asked about the ability to purchase the new dances, Luke essentially said he wasnt ready to talk about the new microtransactions coming with the expansion. While I dont think it will be currencies, I fully expect we will be seeing emotes and other stuff as purchasable content. Perhaps ships, ghosts, emotes and maybe weapon skins? I know weapon skins arent in the game or confirmed but they were heavily rumored before HoW and I could see them making a return for cash.

Right, I'm saying Blizzard can justify $40. Unknown if Bungie can.

and yes, I realize they are under the same pub

Well they are trying. They said they cut the HoW raid to bolster the content coming this fall. So yeah, they made Expansion Pass 1 feel like less content in order to boost the Taken King and justify its cost. And I am sure there could be other speculative guesses at content in the expansion being repurposed old content that was held from launch. *shrugs* The raid thing is true though.

Anyone else really miss the old Bungie of Jaime Griesemer, Marty O'Donnell, and Joe Staten?

Man it feels like a lifetime ago.

Genuinely surprised its just 40 bucks here in canada, considering our prices are now 10-20 dollars more than the standard US MSRP.

Its actually a pretty good price here since its 20 dollars cheaper than what I bought vanilla destiny for.

What I hate though, is the "collectors edition exclusives". I bought your vanilla game+the expansion pass for it. If I want the new stuff included, I have to buy the same stuff I bought all over again?

Really?

You can't offer the stuff up in a package for your existing players with out them buying stuff they already own? Really?

FFS bungie.

Is this the same fucking Luke Smith from the old EGM team?
I preordered the damn thing for $39.99. Wish I had seen this interview first. That's some real bs.

Microtransactions incoming. Want the new dance emotes? $1.99 each. New shaders? $2.99 each. How about that Ghallarhorn you can't seem to get? Just pay $4.99 and it's all yours! Wow, what great value for our dedicated fan base!

I never imagined they would go from fighting to give us cold storage for free on Bungie day to screwing over their most loyal fans. What a drastically different company.

They should came their tag line to:

The Taken King will royally screw you over, this Fall. It's catchy, has a pun and quite a but if truth to it.

I don't think it's really fair to jump on Luke about this, I doubt he was the one that made this decision. And he really didn't have much to work with here, not really a way to spin it. Yeah it's a really shitty practice though and most likely came from activision and bungie execs. PR Luke is pretty funny though, I got a good laugh out of those quotes.

Nah, you can waste your money on shitty cash grabs without telling me. I've bought at least three of the highest rated games of this year day of release for cheaper than this expansion, so I hope you really fucking enjoy it.

Thank you, you can bet that I will.

I don't think so. Myself along with quite a few hardcore fans in the community side would quit and never turn back if they introduced micro transaction. I know it's a small amount compared to the total fanbase but I have a feeling we're not the only ones.

eh. I'd rather miss out on a few emotes and pay up front for each expansion rather than pay full price for a game with micro-transactions like Halo 5. That's the flip side of "Free" maps.
