Bungie defends Destiny: The Taken King's £/$40 price tag (Eurogamer)

At this point is there really any point to complaining? Anyone who is still paying for Destiny should know what kind of game it is and the value proposition it offers. It's a cash grab, but for some people I guess it's still worth it.

For me I find it amusing how Destiny went from being my most anticipated game of the new console generation to a game I only look at like a bystander looks at a traffic accident.

I just feel like I should have waited a year to get Destiny.

Feel like paying $60 this september you get what the game should have originally costed.

Oh well, mabye the DLC will get a big sale or discount once The Taken King arrives. Might give them a chance if that's the case

I'm assuming the new content is for high level characters. So don't you have to do quite a bit of grinding to even experience it? At this point I wouldn't even pick up the Destiny if I found all its content on sale for $30. I simply couldn't handle the time sink required.

Wow, what the fuck at this interview!

Bungie has come a long way from the company who fought Microsoft in order to have free DLC for Halo 2.

Seriously, I like Destiny, spent A LOT of time in it. But seeing this utter and complete lack of respect for their CUSTOMERS... There's no way I can continue supporting this company.

They're voiced missions bro!

Really? Is Dinklage back? I miss hearing my Ghost. Last time I heard him was the Playstation Exclusive Strike in TDB. Makes you wonder if that strike should have been in the base game but was held back to bulk up TDB.

More than likely its almost all new content for The Taken King from what we've seen

I was being a bit facetious. Now Expansion Pass 2 though, I will be completely correct =).

I really don't think Activision micro manages to see what's included in a DLC. Everything about Destiny so far, as far as end user goes, is handled by Bungie. They signed a deal to finance their game and they are obligated to release certain content at certain times, now what is included in those things I would guess is all on Bungie. I don't think any thing malicious happened there, they just really overestimated what they could put out in that time and had to spread over what they had. Pricing is probably handled by Activision though but what you get for that money is all Bungie. That's how I think it is. If IP ownership was with Activision I think it would have been different. Sure, marketing deals that affect the content is on them. Otherwise I feel they've been hands off, no one from Acitivison ever talks about the game's content or development, it only happened at the original announcement in 2013, Bungie has been the face of the game since.

Luke didn't even really do a good job while talking with Jeff on the GB panel. He pretty much agreed that they made a lot of mistakes and were stretching content too thin. He went as far as saying that they want people to be able to play for 10 hours whatever and feel good so they can stop playing until the next piece of content drops.

My brother, an AVID AVID Destiny fan, deleted all his 3 characters and deleted the game off his console.

Bungie lost a fan. Bungie (and Activision, and the industry) lost a big fan with this constant bullshit. His response for doing so: "You pay $60 for the game, and then they ask you to do all these chores and bounties and missions for hours and hours to get one item, and then they will rebalance the game and ask you to do the same all over again. They'll release full-priced expansions and expect you to do the same again and again. They expect you to play Destiny for the next 10 years. That's 10 years of my adult life spend on unlocking these artificial items already present in the game locked behind this bullshit that they expect you to pay for, and you have to do this grind to ensure you stay relevant in the competitive gaming. Why can't they just give you everything in the disc, and let you as a player decide which item you want to use?"

I just looked at him say all this and I realized that Bungie and Activision changed a man who would spend hundreds on collectors editions, and buy every single Call of Duty and get all the unique preorder items and bonuses via ebay because some items are hard to get. They changed a blind consumer (I tried telling him all this for so long and he wouldn't care because he wanted it) and literally made him open his eyes.

So yes. He deleted all his fully leveled characters, and made him delete his game.

His last words: "I'm practically done playing games. This nonsense wasn't there on PS3. This is nonsense and is a waste of my time and life."

Good riddance and thank Bungie.
Your brother sounds kind of dumb. Is he eleven? Did he not see any of this before? Is he going to open his eyes in eighteen years when it comes to mobile games that pace out gameplay with timers? Are you going to be with him when he goes to university just to make sure no one accidentally tells him that Santa Claus isn't real?

I wonder how much of these DLC packs were actually part of the original game that they just decided to split off to make more money?

I'd say a lot of this was on it's way to being done and Activision wanted it out sooner to be a cross-platform game. This just reeks of it. If bungle came out with Destiny next with all of the dlc content in and have it be even more polished? That'd be nuts.

Instead Activision cut up the game, rushed it out, and are releasing content as "expansions"

Destiny 2 has probably had a decent dev cycle at this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Destiny 1 has not had much actual work done for it minus bug fixes and such.

Game had nuts potential too. I'm excited to hear about the dev cycle in detail from someone 6+ years from now. This pr stuff doesn't sound like halo-era bungle, poor guys :(

YEah that post was cringeworthy..people take this way too serious..Don't like it just don't buy it...Prices don't stay static for games.

I hope nobody in the UK buys this.

Seriously, Activision are taking the fucking piss, please ffs do not support this bullshit $1 = £1 fuckery.

So basically there's a CE for DLC, maybe that's down to Destiny's past delays and Activision being behind on scheduled paydays. No idea what he was thinking in that interview, probably seemed like a really clever idea to turn the interview on its head and come out with those oh so witty remarks and insights, but that shit backfired hard.

I don't see it as a big issue either, but then Destiny has done a good job of making people care about cosmetic things. It's the only game I've ever actually cared about how my character looked.

By default: Destiny is like war. If scraps is all three is, then they shall gorge on scraps.

Everyone complains, everyone ends up buying it.

Not everyone, be interesting to know how many are still playing.

343 is trying to win people back, Bungie has people who are addicted to Destiny.

That's no lie. I know two people who are hopelessly addicted, like to the point where their lives are affected in pretty negative ways - theirs and their families. I also see others who are, for want of a better word, broken when it comes to games. They're not bagheads like the first guys, but they're far from a healthy place as they're basically unable to play and enjoy anything that isn't Destiny. I'm not entirely sure what that is or why, I think it's beyond just the social aspects and the daily grind/routine, it's probably a known phenomenon in MMO spheres, whatever it is it's fucked up.

I notice a lot of shade thrown at Bungie for decisions that are likely made by Activision.

Bungie signed up for this... And after gaining independence from MS, no less... They deserve No sympathy... Not that they need it... They're raking in the dough...

Before Destiny launched my friend was convinced they'd be adding Europa, Mercury, and new cities on Earth in the coming months. By the time the game is a year old the only new zone will have been a fucking space ship.

Sigh..again his is not true...There is Phobos which is a new moon, and the dreadnaught is a big area like cosmodrome if leaks are true....If you are going to complain at least get the facts straight. Also rumour is the existing planets will get new areas.

What I really meant is that both parties are to blame, but one seems to be the fall guy.

I'm sure Activision must have a hand in this, I swear (along with the gross "microtransactions" of AW and ASD's) they are testing the water to see what they can get away with.

It's fucking gross one expansion pack sells for £40.

Nah man Luke said on the bombcast last week that the only new area in this expansion will be the ship.

Yep. Bungie has been very clear in their statements that TTK includes one new "destination" - the Dreadnought.

Current Destiny has four destinations: Earth, The Moon, Venus and Mars.

But people played on Phobos at e3 did they not? If that is true then Damn, I take it back.....wont be getting it if thats the case. We have already seen phobos though

Again we have already seen phobos..........

1UP Yours-era Luke Smith would have eviscerated this bullshit cash grab that fucks over the most dedicated Destiny players instead of rewarding them. There's literally no reason to not offer a Digita Taken King Collectors Edition for $50 that includes just The Taken King and all the digital goodies.

....still gonna buy it though.
And people like you are why they keep doing this.

I know you can't gather emotion or context from text and it often leads to misinterpretation, but the responses made me unreasonably salty.

Reading it, I really just felt like he was saying "suck it up" and buy what you already own if you want the content. Part of me feels like this is a good thing because so many times businesses are so wishy-washy with their PR that you never get a straight answer. At the same time, this is turning me off as a collector with the Dinklebot edition.

$40 for the priviledge of playing in different "areas" with re-used assets and enemies while you protect Peter Dinklage as he opens up some door.

Sweet

I'm only half joking

Seriously though, I'm not spending $40 in this...and this "justification" is laughable.

Wait people are complaining about the price? This is standard pricing for an MMO Expansion Pack:

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm $40
World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria $40
Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward $40

Seriously I would love to see a census of the current Playerbase of Destiny to determine how many of those players ever played an MMO before Destiny because I can only imagine how much whining they would give if they had to pay a monthly subscription in top of the expansion price.

At this point more power to Bungie. Milk the people who are into Destiny for as much as they are willing to give. Hopefully they can make a better game next time.

Damn love Destiny. 1400 hours in the game.
But Luke acts like a big ass in this interview. Alot of disrespect.
For me the problem is not 40 bucks really. I know i get my money worth and alot of playtime with it. But the thing is indeed the collecters edition stuff. I am a day one player and i should be rewarded for that abit more. And then to say to those people he just buy the CE edition. I mean come on.

Is it dollar for dollar with currency of a higher value?

"Yeah, I can totally empathise with those people. But the Collector's Edition is a pretty cool package for people who want to pursue that stuff. Otherwise, surely what you're saying is that you would want to buy them separately, right?"

Well, yeah. I would rather do that - pay a few pounds or dollars or whatever - than spend money on things I already own.

"Well, we have nothing more to talk about regarding your opportunity to spend extra money in Destiny, other than The Taken King and the three versions we've announced."

?

Yeah go fuck yourselves Bungie, because that is literally what you've just told the consumers who have supported your game to do.

Go fuck yourselves, but on the way, buy the collectors edition, kthnxbye.

As for the comment about the price and not being willing to talk about the price, that reply is a total joke.

It is the equal to $63.29

Sixty three fucking dollars, is that still foreign to you? Do your homework otherwise send someone who actually cares.

Whoever this Luke Smith guy is comes off looking like a total prick.

I love this game, i have 3 34's and completed all content but it honestly feels like a kick to the balls,

Every.
Single.
Time.

The best part? if you don't own both DLC the TTK actually costs you $60.

For UK Gaffers thats £60 which means it's $95.

For a DLC. For one area.

Are we really going to start comparing content from Destiny to an MMO?

Well, technically Phobos is there, too. Looks like story missions won't necessarily be locked to Patrol areas anymore. Not sure how I feel about that - seems like a waste of perfectly good content spaces, but we'll see.

Amen...I remember them well back in those days. Now I'm not sure who is on what side. And speaking of which...not sure what's worse...Bungie squeezing more money for a roller coaster ride of ups & downs with Destiny or Microsoft putting out that unreal Halo 5: Guardians Limited Collectors Set at $250.00 USA dollars...talk about ouch!

With HoW the leveling process has been greatly accelerated. There are fairly common blue armor pieces with 26 light, that will take you level 28. Legendary armor drops come with 36 light, (they don't require XP or mats for light). Those will take you to level 32.

To get to 34 you some combination of PoE armor, an exotic, and stuff you upgrade with Etheric light.

Last week I took a warlock from level 8 to level 33 in about five days, it's a pretty easy process now, certainly compared to hitting level 30 with the vanilla Destiny release.
