Bungie defends Destiny: The Taken King's £/$40 price tag (Eurogamer)

I'm done with Destiny for good now.

Regretted buying it at all but to be fair I did get into it around lvl 20. Enough to get me to buy the expansions. Haven't bothered with the newest one.

There is no way I'm paying £40-55 for this new expansion. Why on earth should I need to buy the base game/expansions again just to play this bigger expansion? It's ridiculous.

I admit I fell into the Destiny hype but they ain't taking me for a ride any longer. I feel ashamed to have even bought the game. It's just a money grab and Bungie don't give a toss about their fanbase. Honestly, I think any one who keeps on playing this game and buys into whatever Bungie release is nothing but a complete fool. Alright you might find the game really enjoyable but have some self-respect.

1. so you had fun with Destiny? that's the reason i'm still playing it ... ;) House of Wolves is much better in a lot of things than the first expansion, just a sidenote.

2. exactly. you don't have to ... just buy the taken king ... or don't ... you don't have to double dip into anything at all O,o 40$ for the taken king only, everything else is for people who don't have Destiny yet. they get a really good deal i think.

3. really? if bungie didn't listen to their fans, we would have missed a lot of things Destiny has today. at first there were no exotic weapon upgrades planned, if no one cared, the loot at Crota's End would be shitty like at Vault of Glass ... there are more things bungie patched and fixed through the last 42 weeks ... once a month a patch was released and almost every patch/hotfix changed something people requested ... but yeah, bungie shits on their fans ... right.

not everything around destiny is good, there are still a lot of things which need to be adressed. complaining about almost everything in Destiny doesn't help at all ... if you don't like it, don't bother ... i am doing that with a lot of games ... really ... a lot of games.

I was thinking the same during Gran Turismo 5 times. The name was too huge to het trumped by 0,01% of critical players in communities. Besides, GT5 sold 12M. No haterz can jeopardize that.

And then GT6 came with its sales.

Im willing to bet GT6 had more to do with timing of the launch then gt5 or 6, plus every second GT game per gen sells lower. GT7 will be pretty big imo,

Reading the interview again, I can't believe customers were told they would blindly throw money at the screen after seeing a few dancing emotes on video.

That's insane levels of arrogance and a real eye opener
into how Bungie/Activision see us as sheep with sheep-skin wallets just begging to splurge on any small bit of content.

Combined with how much I've had to deal with Destiny's
growing pains (even though gamplay is fun) since the Alpha,
I feel like I'm being treated like a proper mug.

Will pass on this expansion easily, even though I'm guaranteed to lock myself
out of many dailies, nightfalls and PvP by not buying in.

That's because we are, step outside the neogaf bubble where people try to right the wrongs and revolt. Step out the reddit bubble too. That or let me explain to you what non message board visiting people think.

"more destiny? Gimme gimme gimmie"

People love the game, no one is questioning the morality of it all, or stating how they walked away. No one cares about that, like a new COD expansion, people want it and will buy it.

With regard to his tone I think Luke Smith was expecting a light 'So what's new and cool' style YT video. He wasn't expecting to be asked hard questions so he paniced and tried to 'bro' about it, i.e. "naw dude don't worry about that look at how sick these emotes are".

Tom Phillips was having none of it though so he sort of shut down, the long pause is very telling. They keep telling us that they're listening but on every occasion someone makes it past Deej they seem utterly deaf to what anyone but their die-hard do-no-wrong fans are saying. I mean he and Deej both point to the success of the CE as somehow validating their approach.

This needs to be in the op and bolded. I'm fucking disgusted, Activions' deed my ass, this is on Bungie as much as it is on the publisher. Luke Smith sounds like a "we've got them by the balls" shady pusher omg ahahah

Holy hell that reads like playground teasing, what in the fuck?

Wasn't like that the first few expansions... They gave stuff away for free after years of millions of people paying $15 a month.

Anyway, $40 is all I'm spending, I will get my money's worth and more... And I know that will make people furious. I love that.
I'd probably get this for $40, but £40 is $63

VoG loot was way better than Crota? Vision and Fatebringer are still 2 of the best guns in the game.
Every patch since Crota has made the game more casual-friendly, which has good and bad sides

And it continues to go on like this. This game was an utter disappointment. I'm sure someone will continue to buy this and rave about how "fun it is with friends," but it's just so souless. The shooting is great sure, but I really don't get how people can continue to play this game.
Sounds like you will never understand because what you saw as an utter disappointment others enjoyed. Let me guess, you "got to level 15 and returned that shitty game"

Heard it countless times before, I don't expect you to reply or even enter this topic again. Shit posts are left, people forget to wipe, the cycle continues.

Back on topic, if I cared about collection editions and extra emotes I would be mad probably. I just want the game.

(did not realize £40 = $63, that's some bullshit)

I'm I wrong here if the pricing for the CE is the same as Blizzard has been doing with the WoW expansions?

I mean if you want the (in-game) goodies there you have to buy the CE in addition to the base game and the monthly fee. I really don't get this outrage that Bungie is receiving now, I mean they tried something new, and now they have to figure out the right pricing strategy. A friend of mine will probably get more gameplay out of those 40 euros than i'll get out of multiple 60 euro releases.

I just hope this won't sell good, because the price tag is too high.

People, vote with your wallet.
I'm going to buy it twice, once for ps4 and once for Xbox One.

If you enjoy the game, you will pay for it. If you don't enjoy the game, you wouldn't understand

Blizzard puts more content in a 3 monthly patch than Destiny has had in all of it's DLC.

It's worth the money for me if they manage to make some competent crucible maps that aren't narrow corridors with rocks thrown everywhere on the ground to appear more interesting

I'd wouldn't say 'casual friendly' more 'less bullshit' and TDB didbmot achieve that goal. If anything the fact that the item upgrade/crafting systesystems have changed so much is not an example of Bungie listening but rather Bungie not understanding how to do it. TDB started out promisingly by changing how exotic upgrades work and reducing the grind only to add in the commendation currency to hide how little game there was in TDB. That was a roaring success so they were ripped out in HoW entirely turning them into rep bonuses. Even today if I'm not arsed with PvP 3/5 legendary vendors are locked behind crucible bucks. The mats meant I wasted hours on tedious crate runs until they introduced mats trading in TDB. None if these fixes changes the XP grind on the weapons it just means you don't have 3 grinds running at once.

Worst part is ALL of these problems have been solved in MMOs a long time ago w/auction houses for mats (doable w/NPC vendors), raid currencies instead if RNG (which they've finally done w/HoW) and more but no Bungie knew best.

Yup I totally agree.

Of course the casuals who are the vast majority don't care and will jut blindly buy this.

I'm glad that us in the bubble can sometimes make informed decisions even though
it means sweet fa in the grand scheme of things.

At least a few of my casual friends on PSN seem a little cautious about
jumping into this expansion because it's quite expensive at 40 quid.

I enjoyed this game for a week or so. It was shallow to me but I understand why people like. I love borderlands 2 and its almost the same principle - grind - level up - better loot but has a good single player unlike Destiny.

Its crap what they are doing. I think I would get a sequel if it had a better single player but on the basis of how they have handled the DLC of this game I may not bother.

Buyers who bought the game should not be punished for owning the game longer they should be rewarded

World of Warcraft expansions are packed with tons of new content.

Shitty price but all my Destiny playing friends are probably going to buy it

This game just scratches a particular itch for people

I dont hate the game but I am going to take this game in pieces at a much cheaper rate

I remember a LOT of GAF people saying they would wait a few years till the game was fleshed out and cheaper and then finally jump in.

Thats still looking like the solid and smart play if you are interested in ever playing this at all

If you are hopelessly addicted and have friends that play regularly then what can I tell you? Mind as well put your gaming dollars where all your time is going and forgo the competition lol

Because they want money. It wouldn't surprise me if all of this was down to Activision.

yeah but they will make less money due to people like me who wont buy it. Sure I pick up the Taken king DLC but wont spend that extra to get the collector stuff. I am sure there are plenty of people who already own the current DLC that wont pick it up. thats lost money. If they had released the collector extra gear for a smaller charge for us who already own the previous DLC and dont want to buy the same shit again they could make even more money.

there were a lot more VoG Completions with just shards than CE completions, at least for me. but sure, fatebringer is the best :)

The thing is, there are people who will buy it because they just need to have it. They think there are more of those people than there are of people like you.

I think they want this to continue the be the cash cow it has been for the past year.

Activision is clearly testing the water and seeing just how far they can push the margin before the mass market kicks back

Its Call of Duty all over again

Re: Casual friendly

-Removed raid (replaced with wave defense)
-Made loot significantly easier to get.
-Made upgrades faster and cheaper, meanwhile...
-Made most currencies much easier to get

Not all of this is uniformly bad, but there really isn't anything to aim for or challenge yourself with as a "hardcore" player. Trials of Osiris might have filled this role if the PvP wasnt so broken in the first place, but I'm not going to even attempt to list the issues there.

Sucks about the PVP

As a social co-op game though it hardly has an impact since everyone is more than happy to roll together regardless of how easy they progress

I already own everything there is to own (except the Ghost Edition), so I'm practically rebuying the base game + the first two DLCs when I'm getting the physical CE come September.

Can't say I'm too bothered by that, I'm a pretty casual player but still, breaking the total price (even including the TTK CE) down into a (notional) monthly fee it is a okay-ish deal relative to my time played.

If people aren't that into it, they won't buy it.

I'm kinda amazed how bad Destiny is in terms of dlc and overall value.
I honestly hope they will change but it doesn't look like it's going to happen because people still buying this crap.
How can anyone defend this?

"everyone"

Most of my friends list got bored between raids, and many didn't bother with HoW since the raid was dropped. Those of us that still play do much less than we used to. It's always fun to "roll together" but there are other games that let us do that, and Destiny doesn't offer much reason to keep playing these days.

Which is why I am very interested in what happens next

Will the market finally kick back with this 40 dollar expansion?

Even with COD the saturation and downward trend happened MUCH slower and EVEN then they were only one good enough entry from getting right back where they were.

Is Destiny pushing the boundary too hard or will this be fun enough to keep the train going?

I am a casual gamer, I don't care about a majority of the things people take issue with on this site. I come here to talk about games I love. I'm proud to be a filthy casual gaming fan, and not ashamed to admit I buy the horse armors and the little things that are unwarranted.

It's easy, people are not you and they enjoy it.

I hate racing simulators like forza and GT, I think they suck, but I also realize other people may not share that opinion.

From reddit:

Looks like [Luke Smiths] career progression is this:

Enthusiastic game journalist that calls out arrogant game developers --> Community manager that gives thorough game updates and insights into development for the fan base --> arrogant game developer that doesn't seem to give two shits about what the fans think.

Apparently he's lived long enough to seem himself become the villain.

It's almost amusing how much malice people are ascribing to the responses when, if it were an audio or video interview and people had the actual tone of the conversation more bluntly set in front of them...well, this thread probably wouldn't be this large, that's for sure.

They didn't even try to defend it. It really was just "fuck you, give me money."

Yeah, I won't be giving them any of my money. I bought the main game and had fun until it became a grinding fest.

I personally have no problem with the expansion. The only real problem I had was they were giving away Afew things in the CE, emotes and shaders, that weren't available in the regular $40 expansion for those who have been there since day one. BUT yesterday Deej came out and said year one players would get better stuff which will be announced in weekly update.

I understand how other people look at Destiny and can see it as a turnoff but IMO Bungie is learning how to make a mmo type game on consoles without a yearly fee.

House Of Wolves expansion is really a huge step up from Vanilla destiny and even crotas end. They made upgrading easier, less grinding and better rewards. They also added trials, which if you're good at pvp, it has some of the best rewards in the game. I love trials as it brings back to good old halo competitive days for new

Taken King looks like a very good expansion with a lot of stuff included in it. For $40 to me that's good enough. I have over 800 hours logged into destiny and I don't really see myself stopping. One thing this gAme has done for me is save me a shit load of money not buying other games. Bloodborne is the only other game I have purchased that has taken me away but I always come
Back to destiny. I have no desire right now to buy the witcher 3 or even batman. Destiny has been totally worth the money I paid for it and more. 800 plus hours is the longest I have ever played any game and I have to commend Bungie for keeping me playing that long.

I think Destiny gets way too much hate for what it is. So many other games milk you with dlc, like batman, that it's become the norm now with games coming out that all have day one dlc. The game currently has a lot to do so I don't get where people say there is hardly any content. Destiny has more content right now then most FPS or even regular games out there....

I just preordered the collectors edition. Because I want it. Feel free to label me whatever you want- it's my money and I'll spend it how I like. I'm not at war with Activision and I know I'll get hours of enjoyment from the package. I also want the art extras.
