Macon Walmart overrun, sacked by 50 teenagers -- more civilized than the comments tho

Um ... yes?

50 kids live such a shitty existence this type of expression seems like a reasonable option

vs.

White racists from all over the country jump on the news, calling them animals, advocating for segregation and slavery, while not even having the shame to hide behind anon comments.

I mean, if you're more worried about Walmart taking $2K in damage than the systemic racism and socio-economic realities that led to it, I guess that says more about you than you probably intend. Good luck with that!

I like that you focus on the walmart damage instead of, as I did, pointing out that they also ASSAULTED someone.

I dont care how shitty your life is, that guy on the rascal probably didnt have a whole lot to do with putting you there if hes shopping at fucking walmart.

But please, continue painting me as a racist becuase I dont support 50 shitheads who trashed a store OR the numerous shitheads who spout racist shit, while turning a blind eye to assault.

Why do these people jump on the comments section of what some black people did and make it into all black people are bad, instead of what the story is about.

And I have people tell me racism is a figment of blacks imagination

The comments sections in any news story is just insane and I can't believe what I read. The pride parade too I swore I'd never read comments again I can't believe the hatred in people...

Really bizarrely framed thread. The kids are total dickheads but you guys are giving more attention to the FB comments?

Damn, have our standards gone so low that we're excusing this behavior?

Racism is bad.

Damaging property is bad.

The issue here is the latter has legal repercussion.

I think what the OP is getting at is that when black people are involved, they are seen as animals or beasts rather than humans. This event was horrible, and in no way should be marginalized by the discussion of race, but what makes even more awful is that people take the chance to start generalizing an entire race of people (from the safety of the internet, no less!).

That doesn't mean we can't discuss how fucking absolutely insane it is that 50 people wrecked a damn Walmart and assaulted someone, but let's keep it in the boundaries of that and avoid using it as an excuse to shit all over an entire race of people.

Not saying NeoGAF is in that last part, but as a whole.

Who gives a shit what assholes post on Facebook.

Jesus could come back tomorrow and some assholes would post shit about it on Facebook.
Because what is happening here is the racial version of this.

Oh, give me a break. Looting a store and assaulting a customer aren't "expression." And you know nothing about the kids' circumstances or rationale. Likewise, you know nothing of the commenters' circumstances. Perhaps the commenters "live such a shitty existence this type of expression seems like a reasonable option." Would that change how you respond to their comments?

Stop romanticizing anti-social behavior.

I get what the OP is trying to say but this might be the worst execution if an argument I have seen in my time.

"A bad thing has happened but this bad thing is worse."

Because what is happening here is the racial version of this.

I don't think anyone can deny that is what this is. Do we need to weigh a shitty thing happening against the racist assholes commenting on it?

Make the thread about the news story. People really need to start ignoring random youtube/facebook morons. It's NOT the real news story here.

If you want to have a discussion about racist comments on news stories make a separate thread.
I think this is the separate thread you're asking for. You're free to make the thread about the news story. You can even direct people who want to discuss the racist comments to this thread.

Really bizarrely framed thread. The kids are total dickheads but you guys are giving more attention to the FB comments?

The kids are dickheads and I assume they will get caught. But 40 or 50 kids caused $2000 in damage? That's like each kid knocking over $50 worth of stuff. A shelf of detergent or soda. We're not talking about the Rodney King riots here.

Omg gaf. What the fuck is wrong with you? Destroy merchandise and business: OK
Random racist comments: make a stand!

Sure, but in this instance where there is clear video of a large group of people ransacking a store for no reason other than to cause damage, I'm not going to assume that someone who uses the word "thugs" to describe them actually meant something else.
In the case of Facebook/YouTube comments, it's a pretty safe bet.

What's amazing to me is that so many responses are "why is unguarded, casual, vile racism with public-facing accounts news?" I don't know how that's not news. It should always be news, and every one of those people should be shamed out of a career forever.

Because it tells much about the problem the US is facing currently which got pushed a bit into the background in the aftermath of 9/11 but are on display now in strong fashion. The US is a deeply split country with an awefully powerfull racist right wing.

That is nothing you can disagree with.

Why do these people jump on the comments section of what some black people did and make it into all black people are bad, instead of what the story is about.

Yes, exactly.

I like that you focus on the walmart damage instead of, as I did, pointing out that they also ASSAULTED someone.

Look man I don't think you're a racist. I just don't think some weak flashmob with a little vandalism and pulling an old guy off a rascal is enough to justify this shit which I believe is the root cause. If you want to gloss over that and wonder where their parents are ... fine by me. But still indicative of the way you think.

The comments sections in any news story is just insane and I can't believe what I read. The pride parade too I swore I'd never read comments again I can't believe the hatred in people...

Right. I think this blatant racism is far more newsworthy than a bit of vandalism. Every one of these people need to lose their jobs on the spot. We can't just say "welp, that's not news, that's NORMAL!" Completely unacceptable.

The comments are heinous and uneducated. I really wish this kind of shit would stop, but it won't even slow down until future generations, at the earliest.

With that being said, let's not act like what the 40-50 individuals did was cool.

Macon sucks. Oddly large gang population for such a podunk city. My wife taught at a school on the outskirts of Macon a couple years back before she moved to Atlanta.

Why are we putting so much credence into random Facebook comments?

This. You're going to find hateful stuff in comment sections and Facebook feeds about everything. Should they be shamed, I don't have a problem with it.. But I don't know what it adds to the discussion around what these kids did when they assaulted that guy and destroyed property in Wal-mart.

Man, I'm pretty sure I'm getting dumber by reading this thread. How many straw men can you people erect?

I love how thoroughly debunked the Penny Arcade internet dickwad theory is because of Facebook.

It doesn't matter how much it's debunked. It's a viral meme that was obviously based on zero research from the start but people propagate it because it suits them to do so and they don't care to notice when it is proved wrong.

That ransacking and the comments are shit and neither should remotely tried to be justified, but at least we can be thankful that poor dude didn't get seriously hurt.

If your options were minimum wage service industry work or crime, you would be stupid not to choose crime.

I don't even....No...

I think the collective racial thoughts of a society are worse than $2000 worth of damages to Wal Mart. Those words don't live in a bubble. They act as windows that let us know how people like teachers feel about black people. That school teacher showing his racist views points to the fact that he likely does more harm subtly to black kids over his career than $2000 in damages.

Oh right, that part where I wondered where their parents are... oh wait, that didnt happen.

That you think a bunch of assholes saying shitty things is somehow worse than actual physical assault of a disabled person says plenty about you. Yes, they said shitty things. Yes, they are likely shitty people. How many of them actually dragged a handicapped guy off a scooter? How many of them trashed a store just for fun? Now how many people in the article did?

So as much as it upsets me to see the comments from people who would make these assumptions about me based off my skin color, I gotta say... I'm a bit more upset that the Wal-Mart was overrun by 50 teens and thousands of dollars of damage caused.

Between the two, honestly, the comments bother me less.

I remember when I was living in Nashville last year, some black kids went crazy at a Walmart in Memphis, doing the same as in the OP and beating people up. There were some... opinions I heard regarding it that were best not shared.

Lol at having to use Facebook comments to detract from a real story. Gross behavior. My local convenience shop got over run by 100 teens at 4 am 1 month ago. Like wtf. How does that even happen. How do you get that many people who think it's a good idea.

Oddly different reception between this thread and this one

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1071143&highlight=salt

That comparison doesn't make much sense.

In this thread, a group of teens did something pretty terrible and it was followed by terrible comments.

In the thread you linked, gay people literally have done nothing wrong and it was followed by terrible comments.

The argument in the the former is that what the teens did shouldn't be ignored, but it also doesn't justify the comments

The argument in the latter is those are some salty folks, lol look at them.

The comments bother me more than a couple dozen bored fuckwits with more time than respect for property... but they're still fuckwits.

2k$ damage with 50 people?
Is this the world's least competent vandal mob or something?
I feel like we're not getting told the entire story here.
