You are correct. They are doing it after the fact. Doesn't change that their writing team and vision for the movie included such a stupid and sloppy Superman. Knowing Goyer and Snyder, that action scene was just meant for "look how cool this is" and not for a showcase on how Superman didn't understand the scope of the destruction he could cause.
And before you're all like "well, this new movie acknowledges this!" how about the old movie? Where, after all that destruction, the world seems to forget about it as Clark happily rides his bike through the city?
That shows Goyer and Snyder never planned to have that battle hold any substance more than the derp action figures bashing into each other.
That's why people are still not sold on this movie. If the minds behind the first one could drop the ball so hard, who knows how this one will turn out. Trailer be damned.
