SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

I think almost every playthrough of Shenmue I see something I hadn't before. Just by virtue of talking to someone different or at a different time.

I'm playing Shenmue 2 right now and though its mostly great I hope Suzuki will not put any more tower block elevator "puzzles" in any future game. The people of Kowloon really love to arbitrarily block off stairwells and not bother to fix elevators.

I've been to Kowloon it's exactly like that. =)

I'm a huge Shenmue fan. Shenmue II is my favourite game of all time. But I've always seen Shenmue as a very niche franchise, loved by a few and ignored by the rest.

This Kickstarter campaign blows my mind. 5,2 million right now with a chance of being the most successful Kickstarter for a game ever. I'm very impressed. People that have never played the first two games are pledging. Incredible.

I was explaining to the missus how much that KS and the previous games meant to me, she decided to create an account and pledge $29 for a digital copy. She's awesome.

Wow, she is really awesome. Love stories like these. Someone in a Bloodborne thread said that his/her girlfriend saw him attempting to beat a boss and when he was out, she constantly tried to defeat this boss until she finally did it because she saw it was important for him/her.

It's real cute.

OMG, that is honestly awesome!

Knowing me, I'd be like "Why did you do that? I wanted to be the one to beat them!" haha

Kowloon doesn't really exist anymore does it or is it still pretty much a lawless slum despite all their efforts?

There's still an area called Kowloon. I didn't pick up any capsule toys but I got a bunch of gundam kits!
Seriously SO many toy stores in that area and Mong Kok.

Looking back, I feel like part of this feeling (for me at least) was generated by the fact that amongst the most well-known and popular gaming personalities ( you know, the games media people that project themselves onto the world)... most of them don't really care about Shenmue.

There's people like HappyConsoleGamer & Micheal Huber, but they're no Jeff Gerstmanns or Greg Millers in terms of following. There's few to no big-name advocates for Shenmue as an IP, mostly done by a core group of fans.

It's been somewhat amusing actually, to see stuff like GameInformer pick up playing Shenmue again. It's interesting seeing the perception that people had of Shenmue prior to even actually playing it (he said he expected it to be a product of its time and doesn't hold up), and seeing bits and pieces of why Shenmue is so revered by those it manages to touch.

It's an IP that many people has never given a chance, due to how different it was as a game and the fact that it's a Dreamcast game. Really, really hoping the I/II HD happens so that more people can experience it and even for those who dismissed it in the past, to give it a chance.

That has been a wonderful surprise. I had a buddy at work that is a big gamer but never played Shenmue tell me that he was pledging for the PS4 physical edition because "it is his duty as a gamer."

This stuff just warms my heart.

Yeah a lot of them actually seem to be actively against Shenmue too. I mean the last Bombcast they were pretty negative towards Shenmue but somehow were positive about Star Citizen which is currently in a way worse position considering how much funding they got.

Most of time, I don't really give a shit about other people's opinion, ya know. Even those who don't like Shenmue, I can respect that.

Most of the time.

Watching this made my heart shrink a bit. =(

It means that Shenmue will be the most funded game in KS history.

Most funded video game. There is another, broader games category that video games fall into. There is an 8.8M goal and if that one is reached, then Shenmue III would become the most funded project to date in the games category. Would be neat to see it achieve both.

Can't believe how much the total has gone up since I last checked on my way into work this morning, goooo Shenmuuuuuueeeeee!!!!! These are really amazing times.

Anyone else planning on buying the game again when it launches just to support sales? I want to get another physical copy at retail (or digital copy if I have to) so my Kickstarter edition stays in mint condition. I'm also planning on making that game a Christmas present for any PC or PS4 gamers I know. Hopefully it'll ultimately be successful enough for Shenmue 4 to be funded without issue.

I'm hoping for that too.

Although I think a lot of gamers today are "damaged" by games like GTA and Just Cause. I can see the reactions: "What? You can't even steal a car!?" I've seen Shenmue being talked about as open world, but it never was. Shenmue II is big and you can really discover a lot. But it's nowhere near a modern GTA. And of course it was never supposed to be either.

Never pledged to a Kickstarter before since I don't really like crowd-funding as a concept (make the game, and then I'll decide whether to buy it or not, thankyouverymuch), but Shenmue 2 is my favorite game of all time so I felt duty bound to get on board. Completed it four times on different formats, and nothing has ever topped those last few hours of the game.

Pledged $60 for a physical copy on PS4. NOW MAKE IT GOOD SUZUKI!

I'm not expecting Shenmue to appeal to those kind of gamers.

But we've heard aplenty, every now and then from some games media people about how open-worlds are this lame-ass, soulless collectahons, and that they feel like places you just go through the motions.

I'd just love for those people who think that, to give Shenmue a shot, because Shenmue is everything but that. It's a 'world' that is actually the anti-thesis of what open-world games are chasing after, but are focused on a really intimate setting that sells you on their people, their lives and their culture, not 'wow so big much to collect.'

oh come on haha
jeff's hilarious. he obviously plays up his hatred for entertainment
its ok to love something and still laugh at someone making fun of it!

Maybe it's the way he joked about it, but it struck a chord.

Like I said, my heart shrunk as in it made me sad. It's not like I'm angry, I just can't bring myself to shrug it off (like I usually do) when I first saw that.

Shit, I had this in mind while writing the reply but forgot to write it.

The difference between Star Citizen and Shenmue 3 is that Shenmue will actually come out at some point.

Bit of self-promotion, but hopefully you Shenmue fans will enjoy it. I've been thinking about ways I could help the Kickstarter get a little more exposure, and so I've put together an article attempting to illustrate my history with the series - and why it means so much to me.

It's quite a long read, but it's filled with ups-and-downs, and stretches all the way through much of my childhood. My overall goal was to illustrate to people who haven't grown up with Shenmue why it's so special.

I don't remember the day that the snow turned to rain, but I do remember when I first learned about Shenmue. I must have been no more than 11-years-old at the time, and I'd been bought a copy of EDGE magazine. It had one of those customary end-of-year features spotlighting all of the exciting upcoming games, and in it was a small section on Yu Suzuki's magnum opus. There couldn't have been more than a paragraph of text on the title, but there was a screenshot of protagonist Ryo Hazuki looking up at an overhead plane. Call it instinct, but I knew right there and then that I had to play this game, and so I started the arduous task of trying to convince my parents that I had to trade every Nintendo 64 game that I owned for the recently released Dreamcast.

Tell us more about your Kowloon experience.
I've been too, just under 2 years ago. The park where the walled city used to be is quite nice. They've kept the remains of one of the gate entrance signs of the original walled city around, and they've got a museum-ish area with pictures of how the walled city used to be, and videos of ex-residents talking about what it was like living there. Sounded pretty scary as you might imagine given the state of it.

The surrounding area of Kowloon is compromised mainly of fairly standard Hong Kong streets and stuff. HK island has more going on for tourists though.

My wife is Chinese, so my next target is Guilin, tho I've heard it's a little too touristy these days.

It was an open world... it wasn't a sandbox game

Sandbox games have taken the term open world as their own even though it's focus is on objectives/missions, as opposed to living the day and life of a character in a town or city.

Shenmue was a living breathing world (in a small town) that you could roam around in or play detective in to find your fathers killer.

The story would unfold depending on the amount of effort you put in. And if you didn't... life in the game world would move on.

It felt like you were living Ryo's life, not playing a mission based game. It's this reason why I personally got so immersed into the experience, because I was playing in a world that felt real.

Get that Dreamcast off that gravel this instant.

I am considering upping my pledge, currently at $175.

Haha! I did just share it above, but thank you so much for posting! Means a lot! :)

Nice article. I actually encountered the same glitch in the harbour my first playthrough of Shenmue and I spent 3-5 game days roaming around the harbour and other areas trying desperately to find the story story point but to no avail.

Like you I got to learn the environments like the back of my hand as I explored every single corner of the game world. I think after a while I got frustrated and I booted up Shenmue II (I picked up both titles at the same time just as Dreamcast was dead in PAL territories).

Thankfully after getting my bag stolen by Wang I went back to the original and somehow learnt about the glitch and was able to finish it.

Brings back fond memories...

I remember stumbling across that video some years ago and feeling some measure of resentment in response to what he was saying, regardless of how much he was playing up to the crowd. It's good that I can look back on it now with a sense of levity, and feel vindicated that all the fanbase's non-stop noise that was made for Shenmue to live on, somehow, was what eventually led us to getting Shenmue III. I think it really can't be stated enough that, no matter how much people naysay and poke fun, if you keep the dream alive, then it can become a reality.

Ueda and Yoshida said essentially the same thing about The Last Guardian; that if the constant interest and internet chatter surrounding the game over the years wasn't there, then it would've likely been cancelled by now. The Last Guardian is alive because fans never shut the fuck up about it, and always clung to the hope that one day it would see the light of day. And now we live in a world where we have Shenmue III, The Last Guardian and even a remake of Final Fantasy VII to look forward to.

There's Gio Corsi in the panel by the way, years before he started working for Sony I'd assume. He's a massive Shenmue fan by all accounts.

I had the same feeling, which is one reason I loved it. I had to earn my living, it wasn't just about instant action and rewards. It was slow, it gave me a chance to play at my own pace. I felt it trusted me as a gamer in that sense.

Its having a comeback in a serious way. Did a lot of things no other games do, and people recognize it on a wide enough scale. Its so great. Love the Shenmue fans coming together like this.

You know, in my opinion there is a reason why there are a lot of people that are actively against Shenmue. It's probably the same kind of people that knock down The Wire. It's pretty basic psychology if you encounter a relatively tight knit group of people that try to tell you something (over and over again) and react with a mob mentality to criticism.

And it doesn't even matter if the criticism is warranted, if the person has actually ever ssen/played/read/whatever the thing, and so on. And the Shenmue community definitely has a tendency to be loud and dogpile, let's face it.

And like I said, being against something just for the sake of it is a pretty basic concept. Happens all the time.
