Ant-Man |Spoiler Thread| I Think Our First Move Should Be Calling The Avengers

I'm curious how the The Cure/Thomas the Tank Engine gags went with US audiences.
Being an Australian, I was in hysterics throughout the final act (plus the ping pong bug zapper).

California here, and my audience loved both scenes. I especially got a kick out of The Cure reference. Was not expecting that, so we'll done!

I also liked the beginning when Cross was talking about the tech, and he was like, "A guy who can shrink to the size of an ant? Astonishing Tales." This was so neat because his first appearance was in Tales to Astonish I believe?

By the way, who else agrees that this is probably the best third act in an MCU movie?

Was quite good and enjoyable. Better than Avengers 2 really.:P Scott ending up breaking into a recent turned avengers facility, and tackling Falcon was pretty amusing. The fight scenes overall were pretty neat and crazy.

And yeah Hydra is definitely still hanging around despite taking some major hits from Winter Soldier and Avengers 2, through are at a point of struggling a lot probably.

Just saw this yesterday. Really impressed, though I did walk in with almost no expectations at all, which definitely helps. While I don't know how it'll do financially, I can at least say it's a better film than the Thor movies and TIH, so I wouldn't be shocked if it did better than those two now if word of mouth is good.

Could be true but probably bullshit. It would be awesome if marvel wants to be that weird.

That definitely seems to be the Wasp to me. You can also distinctly see (what I interpret to be) three of the four wings of her suit. I saw that myself in theaters and thought it was the Wasp or at least a hint that she still may be out there. That clear picture legitimizes that thought to me.

I thought Darren Cross liquefying a dude and then literally flushing him down the toilet was some seriously dark shit.

Why did he do that anyway? Hope implied that he was going crazy from all the experiments but that wasn't outwardly evident at all. I just thought that he was crazy because of his obsession with Pym and recreating the Ant-Man suit. Maybe they should have shown some outward signs early on.

I have a question about the crazy ants. They were supposed to be able to conduct electricity, and in real life apparently they're attracted to electricity and can mass together to short things out.

In the movie, it seemed like Ant-Man was handing out some tiny package to each ant. Maybe that was the explosives? When he told them to short out the servers though, instead of suicidally cutting across circuits, it looked like they all had some little copper ball hovering over their head conducting lightning. Did anyone catch what was happening?

I'd love to see Ward made a comment about that in Agent of SHIELD S3, maybe he's the one who sent those hydra guys to Cross, lol

Pym mention that Cross is not a stable guy from the first place. whether all those time experimenting with the particles really messed his head or not doesn't really matter I think.

The fact that Hope even calls out to him in the vault that his brain chemistry has been messed with at least tells me that's what he movie wants us to know about him.

By the way, poor Antony. My daughter was really upset about that.

So sorry if this had been discussed but something stuck out in the movie tonight. If Hank's Ant Man had been involved in military action back in the 80's, how is it that it has never come up before? SHIELD never talked about it and neither did any of the solo or Avenger movies? I'd think this would have been something heavily talked about.

My initial guess is that they covered it with the "it was a myth" talk but if SHIELD knew about it, how come Coulson and Fury didn't seem to know/care about it?

SHIELD has been involved in a lot of things over the decades-it doesn't mean they would have had to have named ripped everything in the previous Marvel movies.

People probably don't care but I was a bit mindblown seeing Anna Akana show up in this movie, especially sharing a cameo with Stan Lee.

She's moving up from the Youtubes.

Much like the super solder serum, I take it as just one of those things they couldn't replicate anymore. Pym had the only known working samples, and they couldn't access it.

I was real bummed when Scott didn't find and bring back Mrs. Pym from the subatomic realm.

I was glad they didn't do that, that would be like if two people were teleported to a random spot in the universe and it just so happened to be the same spot. Also if she was shrinking forever she would have been way out of Scott's perception

Ah that's a good thought and makes sense. And Hank had "retired" Ant Man for a while so it sounds like it simply wasn't as important.

I just assumed that was Janet.

edit: Oh snap sorry for the double post.

Yeah that makes more sense.

This was about on par with iron man 2. Decent, not great, kinda by the books (no pun intended). No where near as good as guardians.

Also, I'm surprised they never had him run out of serum or something. They showed it needed cartridges. The showed them reloading them after the first suit test. But never used it again, felt odd.

Cross was going to sell the formula as fuel to Hydra.

Hank told Scott that putting on the suit had some effect on brain chemistry. I didn't catch it on either of my viewings, but did he ever say that he fixed this for Scott?

Hank also said he'd put the suit on himself if he could, but can't because the suit took a toll on him. When he was putting his stuff back in his pocket after being scanned at Cross' event near the climax, one of Hank's items is a container of pills.

I'm not too familiar with Ant-Man's history, but were side effects brought up in a significant manner in the comics?

They alluded to the infinity serum in iron man 2 when fury talked about Howard Stark like he knew him personally but unfortunately never touched on it again

They did? Wow I don't remember that at all.

But they did have Fury talk about his grandfather working in an elevator in NY so I assume he's not that old.

I was talking ant man running out.... It's not like Pym had his own production facilities like Cross did.

Also, when hope said the serum was fucking with cross' head. How? He hadn't fixed nor worn the suit at all prior to that scene. Was he drinking it or something off screen? Felt like a scene that was placed too early in the film and the dialog makes no sense.

It's sort of a plot hole in that it feels like a scene was cut involving Cross using the Yellowjacket suit. As it stands, there is nothing in the movie prior to that line to indicate that he was personally damaged due to the suit.

What a fun movie. Rudd was great. Everyone did great. Pena was hilarious.

The de-aging on Douglas at the beginning was amazing. The best I've seen. Knowing that scene wasn't filmed in 1989 was the only thing that convinced me that that some de-aging was done. It was really cool.

Great tie-in with the new Avengers facility. Great miniature FX. Great humor.

Another win for Marvel.

I know right? I couldn't believe it and literally said "whoa" out loud. Michael Pena killed it, fucking hilarious. The wasp costume at the end was a cool nod and I'm surprised there was no giant ant man. Overall it was a fun movie.

He could be acfected just for being in close proximity with the particle for years I guess. Personally I think Cross is crazy since the start, When Hope says it's the particle messing with his brain, I think it was just her trying to talk Cross to calm down. Give him an excuse in case he didnt go through killing Pym etc.

I thought the "it's the serum making you talk" meant that it was his obsession with recreating the Pym Particles was making him act like that.

I think I'm going to skip this one, so I would appreciate a synopsis if anyone could provide one or point me in the right direction.

Did I miss the part where Cross found out who Scott was?

It just seemed to be announced at the demonstration/trap/thing... but I never saw anything that showed him finding out? Did I miss it... or was it never shown how he knows?

That theory doesn't hold up due to Hank talking about the helmet earlier in the film.

The helmet protects him from the shapeshifting or that the experience of shapeshifting caused his body to deteriorate over time?

The idea is that news get fast, and certain events are really too obvious the more when you think about it.

Man steals shrinking suit.
Man plans to steal another shrinking suit.
Man stops another man wearing shrinking suit.
BY THE WAY CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR IS COMING UP.

News travels fast when your former mentor is connected to an imprisoned man that suddenly disappears out of nowhere.

I went into this with very low expectations given the Wright fiasco. I was glad to see that the film still had Wright's fingerprints all over it. I easily enjoyed this more than AOU. Im glad Phase 2 was ended on a more positive note then the shitfest that was AOU

I was real bummed when Scott didn't find and bring back Mrs. Pym from the subatomic realm.

Maybe that was too close to the ending of Big Hero 6 for them to do it again.

I think it satisfyingly sets up the return of Mrs. Pym in a sequel however with Pym regaining some hope that she could still be alive (and that fan theory someone posted about a little earlier about the cloudy figure in the subatomic realm).

I liked it.
It started off a bit slow but finished strong.
I actually liked the villan here, despite what the consensus has been.
Every use of the powers was very entertaining.
The ants were neat. Such a weird aspect that no one really remarked on. ANTS ARE EVERYWHERE.

I'm looking forward to a time when Marvel movies move away from orbiting the Avengers franchise. I'll be waiting a while, I know, but I would prefer the films to stand completley on their own in the future.
If I'm watching Ant Man 10 years from now will that fight scene even mean anything? Will anyone understand what's going on or who he's fighting if they just pick up this movie out of order?

Even this film take it for granted that you already know what avenger and MCU in general is. I mean, if someone completely blind about Avengers watch Ant-Man, would they even understand all the talk about avengers in this movie like Pym saying avengers busy dropping cities, or what yhat building with A logo is when Pym try to sneak in that place, who is that winged dude. Or the significance of Lang saying that he fought avengers and live etc. Or when Cross mention Hydra.

Agreed-I loved the ants and Yellowjacket was a very scary villain.
