Star Wars KOTOR 2 Gets Big Update + out on Mac & Linux

Well, I disagree entirely. KotOR 1 is better written, has better characters and better locations. If KotOR 2 had been finished, the story might have been average.

And KotOR 1's gameplay was better. Not really good, but better.

Um, okay. I think G0T0 alone is better than anything in KotOR I and that's not even the best character in KotOR II. It's not necessarily a negative, but KotOR I has an almost cartoonish feel to its writing, whereas KotOR II is a lot more subtle and nuanced. Not that it's always those things, any RPG of that scale is likely to have some pretty bad writing in some parts, but its highs are so much higher than KotOR I and it becomes more apparent the more you dig in.

The only ones who ever do that on GAF are console fanboys. I have said and will continue to say as long as I live that open platforms are better for gaming, games and gamers. The fact that you get free "HD remasters" is just another instance of that.
KOTOR2 dialog courtesty of Penny Arcade's Tycho.

Peragus is soooo interesting that Telos makes me just want to skip that planet and all the side quests related to it. At least the male Exile has the Handmaiden to look forward too so there is something to be gained.

I want to see deleted content with Atton and Mical so I chose female this time.

I hope this update fixes all of the game breaking glitches that were in the Windows version.

I still haven't finished it because of them.

Peragus is great. It's Telos that's shit.

Also, this game has aged so well graphically—in large part because of the clean textures and the incredible models. Kreia and Sion, in particular.

Intro to KotOR 2 is just so boring. I prefer Terris.

This frightens me. I've always felt the intro sequences are the weakest part of any BioWare game. I found Taris in KoTOR to be slow, maybe less so on my most recent playthrough (iPad release), but still slow.

Kotor 2 is far, far worse, in Kotor 1 you start on a ship being invaded by the sith and you fight your way out (even see a cool light Saber duel). In Kotor 2, you start as jedi without a lightsaber, fighting common critters., and the you get to respective hubs.

I have tried to play KOTOR 1 multiple times and only got to a wookie world. Do decisions carry over to KOTOR 2? I already know KOTOR 1's big twist.is it worth playing though the first sections a 4th time?

The Kotor 2 intro is probablt one of the worst ever made, let's be honest now.

A shame given how amazing the rest is.

I have a question, my controller is far too sensitive and it's semi impossible to walk.

For Immersion, I LIKE walking. Any solution ?

Not exactly. But sometimes stuff are asked like "what happened there ? " and your answer changes that.

They try their best not to retcon your story, Revan's sex is never mentioned etc...

Of course that didn't work in European localizations as they couldn't avoid using either male or female for Revan in the sentences. But English is fine.

Nah Peragus is actually pretty cool, but Telos is boring. Thankfully you can get through it quick and move onto the big turning point.

God Sion talks way too much. I remember being annoyed every time I saw him on screen. "SKIP SKIP SKIP WHY WON'T IT SKIP."

The Malak and Revan story was just better.

Peragus is great. It's Telos that's shit.

I don't regret requesting a refund now. Peragus is terrible, TERRIBLE I say (scream), and you actually tell me that the next area is even weaker?

I love both KOTOR 1 and Obsidian, but I'm in no mood for another deeply flawed unfinished motherfucking gem.

The only planets that are dreadful to me are Telos and Onderon (but I think this is more due to playing fatigue more than anything). Thank god that there isn't another Tatooine level..

The pay off is more than worth it. Literally everybody agrees. If you're going to focus on the one negative part OK then, we won't miss you.

Onderon was a lot of fun btw. So yeah player fatigue. Which, with the jungle part, is perfectly understandable. I had to cheat my way through there D: . I was interested in the bigger picture.

if you aren't averse to mods (that add bonuses) then Super Skip Peragus is still compatible

Skips Peragus, gives you all the items and experience you would collect while playing through the intro, PLUS a Lightsaber and Crystals

the only thing you don't get is the voice recorder to access the
HK Factory
added back into the game with TSLRCM

Peragus is basically a survival horror level. The second planet is a lot more like your typical KOTOR 1 planet. If you enjoyed KOTOR 1, you'll probably enjoy Telos just fine.

I only wish Kotor 2 first 10 hours wasn't so boring. The game really picks up after you reach dantooine By then most people usually stop playing it. But the game is really good after that.
You don't even get a lightsaber until 10-15 hours into the game.

What does cackling have to do with their story?

I'll never understand the weird emphasis placed on the "HAHAHAHAHA" thing. It's less a writing issue, and more a tonal one. KOTOR 1 and 2 approached the Star Wars universe in fundamentally different ways, and that's something I appreciate about them.

Anyway, this is a very neat surprise. Great excuse to jump back into KOTOR 2.

I remember people being annoyed at that when it came out, I even had a friend stop playing because of it. I don't get it, it's not like the combat
is all that different with a vibroblade than a lightsaber, and it's not the good part of any KotOR game anyway.
Peragus is probably slightly too long (the part in the mines could've been skipped), but I think it's a good introduction to the game. It's slow paced on purpose.

As for Sion, he's hardly the highlight of the game, but he's still way more interesting than freaking Malak.
The story also isn't about the two villains, so they matter much less.

So I've spent 3 hours on the game and I'm finally out of Peragus and did the initial start of whatever planet you land on (People always fucking call you when you don't want to be disturbed, game is very true to life in that regard). The soundtrack is super good, the battle music in particular is great and Kreia is a cool character.

But the dude you rescue is pretty much Carth 1.5. Is it just a ruse, will he become an actual interesting character as the game progresses?

It also seems the AMD "Overclock" wasn't quite the panacea I first thought it was either as the game is starting to struggle a lot to stay at 60 FPS now that I'm out of Peragus. So that's kinda balls. But at least the "dungeon" parts run smoothly.

Kotor 2 is an excellent game. It is absolutely silly to avoid this game due to disliking Peregus. This reminds me of all the people bitching about P4G start and saying they are skipping an 80 hour RPG because of first couple hours.

Heck, grab the skip Peregus mod, bam, you are at the end of the level and have a light saber and all the XP, LSP or DSP, companion influences and anything else.

IMO, writing is better then Kotor 1... but overall Kotor 1 has a better overarching story... just one that hasn't been well written. Kotor 2 also I feel has better game systems.

In either case, both games are great, IMO, Kotor 2 is better, especially with the mod. For the price, it should be a no-brainer.

He is like edgier version of Carth, yeah. However, there are other companions who are quite good. Not sure about AMD, but game runs decently well even on lower end hardware.

That sounds terrible, I'll keep him out of my party then. I did notice a broken down old friend in the ship though, so that's nice.

And yeah it never goes below 30, so that's good enough to play it, but there are specific AMD related performance issues unfortunatley :P.

Malak is interesting if you imagine a "senpai please notice me" thought bubble over his head at all times.

Agree about Sion, but similarly KOTOR 1 isn't really about Malak either.

Game looks absolutely breathtaking on my retina MacBook Pro.

I would love ... love... to play this on the 5K iMac.

I feel like you are missing some trademark symbols and your post would be complete.

I honestly can't tell if this is satire

I have a custom watercooled PC with a Titan and an OC'd 3820 on 1TB of SSDs. But I've toyed with buying an ultrawide or an Acer Predator or 4K or the Asus G-Sync... and there's nothing out there that I've found that I like as much as the 15" screen on my rMBP.

So, for an older game like this that can actually run on my anemic 750M, the game looks absolutely beautiful - so much better than I could ever remember playing it at 480p on a rear projection CRT.

so, not satire ;p

I dunno, nothing Obsidian has done comes close to the lore and world building in Thedas.

Over the course of their three games and expansions I think I might have to agree with you, but I think Pillars of Eternity stands up pretty well to Dragon Age: Origins.

Personally I think I will give the edge to Obsidian if they get the chance to refine and expand the lore in PoE over the coming years like Bioware has.

Malak is interesting if you imagine a "senpai please notice me" thought bubble over his head at all times.

Haha, never thought of it like that but it's true.

You're right that KotOR isn't about Malak, but I guess what I meant was that the main plot revolves around stopping him The twist recontextualises that a bit and depending on whether you're LS or DS your motivation changes, but encountering Malak is still the climax of the game and it's a bit lame because he's lame.

KotOR II presents a somewhat similar 'save the world!' scenario, and while you do end up saving the world that is not what the story is about at all. I'd argue they're more supporting characters for Kreia (and in the case of Nihilus, Visas) than they are villains. That's why I think it's okay that they're not great villains, although like I said I think Sion is a heck of a lot better than Malak, and his death is actually a good end for his character. The premise of KotOR II isn't 'save the world!', that is just the context for the Exile's manipulated journey self discovery. And no, I don't think Kreia is a villain either.

Now can they actually make it appear after KOTOR (like it used to), get rid of the THREE trademark symbols, and not make it be the only Star Wars game in all caps?

It's killing me.

Huh, maybe I can force myself to play this game. Hopefully, someone adds a mod that makes it quicker to travel around the areas (one of the main reasons I quite playing the game - I hated how long it took to get anywhere).

I haven't played Kotor 2 since a year after it came out. This is probably a good excuse to play it again after forgetting everything between the beginning and the ending.

I booted this up just now and the only resolution showing is 1280x720. I need 1920x1080. What gives?

XBO controller seemed to work fine though.

In the settings, does an X mean on or off?

Also, is anyone else having a camera problem, just spins around in circles unless I hold the joystick?

I definitely recommend turning down the default brightness. It seems bugged and defaults to way above where it should be.

So is there a way to rebind the controller buttons? There's some weirdly laid out stuff here.

Yeah for all the work they did on the port, the controller mapping is awful. No switch weapon/switch leader but they mapped flourish weapon? Wtf

The naming is all over the place even ignoring KOTOR™2. This is probably one of those things they should have standardized.

Was about to go to the last area and suddenly I'm playing HK 47 in a random building? It literally went from massive end game event to this with no context. Guess I have to finish this area to escape?

Got to Telos. The only technical problem I've been having is the game minimizing when most pre-rendered cutscenes are launched, then it being skipped when I go back. Kind of annoying.

I like a lot of Paragus but man does it just keep going and going.

God Sion talks way too much. I remember being annoyed every time I saw him on screen. "SKIP SKIP SKIP WHY WON'T IT SKIP."

The Malak and Revan story was just better.

By a long shot. Sion or Mccrusher as everyone started calling him. Is just laughable.

Luckily I crushed the early boring bits so now I can actually enjoy myself. Love the tech jump.
