For the headline win. Brady's lawyers and the NFLPA had already knew that Brady would never end up physically handing his cell phone over to anyone. The precendent it would set alone would be insane. Goodell decided to use Brady's inability to produce the phone (he was never gonna see) as part of the reason to uphold his original ruling. It's the same as when the NFL said 11 out of the 12 Patriots football were 2 PSI lower, which was completely false.

I personally think Goodell doesn't have control of this office and was forced into this position. There are definitely individuals in the NFL office who have a strong anti-patriots agenda and drove this from a minor issue to a large scandal. I don't think Goodell wanted to burn his bridge with Kraft but once this exploded and he started to get support from the other owners he took the reins and ran with it. No doubt it has benefited him since then.

Whatever issues one has with Roger Goodell and mistakes he's made this year, upholding Brady's suspension in this case was absolutely the right thing to do just as it was right to suspend AP. Regardless of how much evidence Brady says he provided, the fact he was worried enough about the sum total of the phone's contents that he would actually order that it be destroyed even though he never had to hand it over anyways just screams wrongdoing and dishonesty.

Also I don't understand the hair splitting over deflating footballs from some folks and how some veteran/non-Patriot players have shrugged it off as, 'Yeah I used to deflate my game ball to get a bit of an edge,' alright then, would you tell kids who want to play the game that it's OK? If kids in a little league or a HS team found the other team deflated their footballs for easier catching it would be classified as cheating, pure and simple and the kids on the other team, their coach and their parents would be screaming bloody murder so why should adult professional league players be held to any different standard of integrity? Doesn't seem hard to figure out.

If this were happening to my team, I'd look at the whole Lance Armstrong debacle right here on gaf. Where everyone knew he was cheating, including the defense force, but they enabled the lies and cover-ups because he was their hero. I think Brady's cheating is absolutely insignificant compared to the lying and worse - the simple ability to have a few hundred thousand people go along with your lies because you're winning.
