Banned
No longer comfortable with being the home to one of the fastest growing dedicated racist forums on the 'net, Reddit has finally decided to ban /r/CoonTown and it's related subreddits along with subforums dedicated to spreading animated child pornography.

Reddit Admin (spez) Announcement said:
Today we removed communities dedicated to animated CP and a handful of other communities that violate the spirit of the policy by making Reddit worse for everyone else: /r/CoonTown, /r/WatchNiggersDie, /r/bestofcoontown, /r/koontown, /r/CoonTownMods, /r/CoonTownMeta.
Unfortunately, they still have "KikeTown" and dozens of others abhorrent communities.

While it's a start, I feel that much more drastic measures will be needed to really mend the decrepit husk of a heart that reddit has.

Thanks for the tip, hobblygobbly!

Good catch, Wiseblood
spaz is a reddit founder and the admin that made the initial announcement. CT stands for "CoonTown"

A good start but am I right in thinking the creation of these communities is largely unmoderated? Nothing stopping someone bringing them back.

See yah, assholes.

Reddit has mentioned than any similar subreddits would be banned too.

This happened with r/NeoF**. They tried coming back, but were shut down again.

*I added the asterisks, btw. That's not blocked in the forum.

There's a flurry of mods creating dupe forums right now, but the admins are hunting them down and will do so through the day.

That's exactly what happened in The Fattening, the front page was flooded with FPH content for days. Hopefully this won't be quite as bad, as the average Redditor is SLIGHTLY less sympathetic to flagrant racism. (Diet racism, on the other hand...)

I'm not even a redditor but I've loved how the drama almost perfectly illustrated how seeking infinite liberty is a totally misguided endeavor that invariably leads to unpleasant consequences.

Well the issue is that by allowing the bigoted subreddits, they couldn't wash their hands from association with them.

They tried with their libertarian platitudes, but it wasn't working.

site will be better for it. I still tend to avoid reading comments in popular subreddits which are not moderated well and anytime topics like feminism, racism or religion is brought up. I am glad the subreddits I frequent have less of the bullshit.

I have the same question.

Reddit founder touches on this very point:

This topic was discussed on a recent On Point broadcast (NPR) and GAF had a slight mention on there being described as a "progressive gaming forum"

What the actual fuck. I'm glad i've never even dipped my toes in Reddit.

What self-respecting website would ever tolerate subreddits like this. Holy shit. Why is this getting banned now instead of always and forever.

Crazy how many of them are focused on african americans. Crazy how singled out it seems for us.

Idk man, its like how in rap videos on youtube you'll always seen tons of racist comments and it's like "why did you bother searching for the video then?" Some racists just have a need to make it known that they hate us.

Dammit, I didn't even know that was a thing. This sounds like they're banning the racist communities that they get heat for, but not the ones the press isn't talking about. There's no standard where one of those is bannable and the other isn't. Hopefully this is just a start.

I can't believe they allowed themselves to be associated with that for so long. I went to coontown a few times, they were openly celebrating the deaths of black people and their murderers. How a company could look at that and not rid themselves of it immediately is beyond me.

I think there are some brakes applied, accounts older than a month can't create new subreddits, having multiple reddits you moderated banned strips your current account of the ability to create new ones.

Of course, they've only just begun to knock the dust off shit mountain. Reddit's like that guy who ballooned to 700lbs eating nothing but cake, and this latest move is the first month of that guy's diet.

What's what happens when you have too much freedom.

Well the problem was that Reddit wants to make money.

They could pull a 4chan, but they don't want to. They have investors and want to make money.

It's hard to do that when your site is associated with the biggest havens for bigots.

In a sense, this is the beauty of capitalism at work.

They didn't explicitly tolerate it, they just didn't act on it. It would have been irrelevant in either case, the content would have shown up because you were specifically looking for it. Do you not trust yourself on Google because their results don't completely filter out awful things?

Those were actually sub-forums? Fucking hell.

Yes, but they were created by randos.

Reddit staff didn't create them. They just tolerated them under the auspices of "free speech".

Anybody can create a subreddit or forum at anytime.
