Reddit finally bans "Coontown", "WatchN*****sDie", & animated child porn forums

Good. Whatever happened to those few posters here that were arguing that drawn/animated child porn wasn't child porn? I wonder if they're disappointed.

What do they mean by animated CP? Lolicon / Shota?

I wonder if they're actively trying to ship off undesirables to ******** so it builds a rep for that sort of thing.

edit: so undesirable i can't even link it lmao

Note that Reddit has not actually learned anything from any of this and did it for purely selfish reasons.

EDIT: Beaten.

So why was /r/watchniggersdie banned but not /r/watchpeopledie, seems to me they should be treated equally. Also there is /r/CuteFemaleCorpses.

nvm, others were faster.

I had a very low opinion of Reddit when they started a witch hunt against Salah Barhoun and Sunil Tripathi thinking that it would be cute if they could be arm chair detective and catch the Boston Bombers.

I was disgusted by their action and vow to never join reddit, I feel like that I have made the right choice in the end.

GO GAF!! <(^_^)>

CoonTown.

The racist subreddit.

Here I thought it mean Clown Town... though there isn't much difference there. ;p

In a way it was less problematic with usenet. Anyone can create an alt (anarchists, lunatic, terrorists) usenet group but any news server admin can refuse to carry your group if they don't like it.

#WatchNiggersDie would be an interesting thing to put at the bottom of a random commercial to see if anyone would notice.

See yah, assholes.

Reddit has mentioned than any similar subreddits would be banned too.

This happened with r/NeoF**. They tried coming back, but were shut down again.

*I added the asterisks, btw. That's not blocked in the forum.
Your usage of one asterisk to explain your asterisk usage leaves you one asterisk short for your intended asterisk usage.

They didn't explicitly tolerate it, they just didn't act on it. It would have been irrelevant in either case, the content would have shown up because you were specifically looking for it. Do you not trust yourself on Google because their results don't completely filter out awful things?

I hate this logic. Reddit's staff knew of their existance and chose not to do anything about it until now, thats tolerating it. Also the goolgle example is dumb, google has nothing to do with the sites that pop up from their searches and has no power to shut them down. Reddit does.

A good start but am I right in thinking the creation of these communities is largely unmoderated? Nothing stopping someone bringing them back.

They'll try and bring them back, but there are going to be people who report these new subs to the admins and they'll be closed within a day of opening.

Plus the admins are watching.

A bit of a correction here.

Reddit didn't tolerate them per se. They just didn't break their TOS according to their extremely libertarian moderation principles.

As a subreddit creator you can do anything outside of breaking laws. That was their aim, to give users a platform to create subreddits on anything protected by free speech.

However, now that it's affecting their bottom line, e.g., recruiting talent, they're adjusting their stances.

So it was never about tolerating anyone. As long as the subreddit didn't break their lenient TOS, nothing was done.

I used to visit /r/coontown for the funny/salt when anything race based was going down. The language was a little amusing from time to time--I admit I laughed once or twice--but everyone posting on there was just the scum of the earth. I wanted to believe that it was mostly just trolling, but I think that most of the posters believe that shit in their bones.

Won't be missed.

Also there was no free speech violation in this you racist pedo fuckheads.

Man, I went one time into coontown and it was horrible. Good riddance. These assholes can migrate to 8chan or something.

Cool, that's one step forward, although their reasoning above is bullshit.

So what about the other bigot boards? Like that Gamergate one?

I wish Reddit fumigated their entire website and took a more proactive stance towards fighting bigotry instead of burying their bigoted skeletons or only reacting when it's convenient.

I legitimately didn't think this would ever happen. I guess when your staff is fleeing the site and no one else wants to work there you've got to admit that you have a problem. Good on them for finally taking a step in the right direction, but they've got a long way to go.

USC-fan holding his American flag and constitution copy while crying under his bed

Edit: wait they did this for money? Bullshit, they're just trying to make it look like they weren't caving to public opinion of bigotry.

Good riddance!!

Do these vile subreddits still exist?
Like i love dead female body's and such?

The name is wrong but i was something like that..

I love how they used the cash excuse, as if to assure the pedos and racists that this occurred due outside pressure.

You know this actually gives me a bit of hope for humanity. Fuck reddit, but the fact that enough people chose not to work at reddit because of sub-reddits like these, to the point where it was hurting their bottom line restores a bit of my faith in people. This is extra surprising considering the type of views people who work for tech companies tend to have on issues like this.

Reading that list, it's still so weird that people would dedicate so much time to discussing what/who they hate. I'm using "discussing" in the loosest sense, mind you.

I wonder how the black employees felt a few weeks ago during the meeting when they announced they'd ban the fat hate forum and the neogaf hate forum but keep all the racist forums?

I know I'd feel uncomfortable as fuck, especially since I'd assume the room was 95% white and Asian
