Sorority recruiting vid taken down, "worse for women than Donald Trump"

High production values captured perhaps too many faux tans and blondes. The University of Alabama's Alpha Phi made a video full of dancing and glitter blowing that has had mixed response, with some saying the video of all white members lacks diversity and objectifies women. An AL.com writer said it was "worse for women than Donald Trump." The house took down the video, but it is still here:

the slickest misguided student organization video ever tbh. they even used a drone

first comment lol, what BS
"Feminists are jealous bitter bitches. These gorgeous girls are just having fun."

Why would they make a "recruiting video" aimed at horny teen boys for a sorority ?

Sex appeal is worse for women than sexism. Quit being sexy, women. Quit it. Knock it out.

That being said the lack of diversity weirds me out. Not just that they're all white, but that they look so similar you could tell me they were all related and I wouldn't question it.

Why would the video be too white? Aren't the University of Alabama Greek fraternities/sororities almost all white? I could've sworn I've read articles the past year or two about how sororities there rarely allowed black women to rush etc.

I can see why the video would be problematic for the university, but it's not like they're exactly lying here about what they're showing. A bunch of rich, well off young blonde white women, partying, having fun. I bet this will appeal to any Athletes as well. Almost playboy mansion type probably.

Well, the video is tacky as hell, but Donald Trump is trying to remove essential rights and medical care from women all over the country.

So I'm going to go ahead and disagree.

Was that a meeting of future TV reporters?
Is nearly every female in US blonde or what?

They look all the same.

Vast majority of those women in particular are fake blondes.

I was more taken aback that there wasn't a single one that was remotely overweight. Even the sororities at Arkansas would have a number of girls that weren't stick thin.

Honest question, what's the problem here?

I'm struggling to understand the issue with this video
It was a sorority vid that made the sorority look entirely recreational, alluring, and not remotely related to the noble premise the university can promote and hopes these organizations fundamentally exist for

feminism means letting women do what they want and think is right, or fun. and not telling them again what they should not do.
they did this all by themselves, right? I don't see a problem here. misguided criticism.

as a european I don't know the first thing about sororities (or the male equivalent) though, from the movies and tv shows I always thought they were about having fun, making connections etc.

So, if they had used a couple of shots of them hitting the books and helping the community it would be all right?

It's a recreational video ffs, not like they're trying to make a statement in it

I somehow fell down a YouTube hole and stumbled onto this last week. I was kind of dumbfounded by it. The production value, the music, the amount of blondes in one place.

I'm not catching the funny on making fun over a missing person then
The Onion is a satire news group. No one was actually missing in that story. It was a satirical joke about the prevalence of blonde white girl sorority culture.

What the fuck is it with Sororities in the US? Can someone explain this to me, I've never understood why its such a big deal, I dont even understand the concept.

It seems like a Union for teenage dickheads?

Easier way for some people to make friends/have parties/have work connections after college. They do tend to think a little highly of themselves, which is annoying, but they're just the natural evolution of the upper echelons of high school. A club that owns a big house.

It's the onion... lol. Your response is now 10x more funnier to me.

One of the reports at the bottom was "ASU coed thought she was another ASU coed for 14 weeks".

The apparent lack of diversity will be addressed when Halloween comes around and 10% of these girls get their blackface costumes on. :p

I understand that, but why is vast majority of US girls striving to have blonde hair?
Yeah, your observation is correct. Maybe there isn't any? Like in the fact that they are accepting only "slim" ones?

And/or Crips/Bloods themed party.

That was really well made. Surprised it was taken down. Was expecting a more trashy video but that's not the case here.

Sooooo.....it's a situation where the different 'social types' come together and live under one roof sort of thing rather than them just doing there own thing. I thought most people got over that sort of shit in highschool, but apparently in the US you can carry it on through your University / College years :/

We didnt even have different social groups in my highschool, everyone just intermingled.

It may sound weird but a lot of the fake blondes will go dark in the winter. Lots of girls go blonde in the summer. I think it's an aesthetic preference for most.

Well the good news is that the vast majority of them will grow up a lot by the time they graduate. I had nothing but positive interactions with sorority girls in grad school. Then again I'm a dude so...

Some frats/sororities can be dickish some are not. In the end those people are making connections that will hopefully be beneficial to them post university. The old phrase "it's not what you know but who you know"

Pretty much, yeah. They usually recruit people from the same social circles they grew up in. Some of them are fine, others are full of assholes. I guess it could be argued that it helps to have a "tribe" as you transition into the adult world, and it does take the work out of having to meet people and make new friends on your own, but I just kinda hung out with people I met in class/in my assigned dorm house in college, so the whole idea of competing to be friends with people is kind of foreign to me.
