Sorority recruiting vid taken down, "worse for women than Donald Trump"

Sooooo.....it's a situation where the different 'social types' come together and live under one roof sort of thing rather than them just doing there own thing. I thought most people got over that sort of shit in highschool, but apparently in the US you can carry it on through your University / College years :/

We didnt even have different social groups in my highschool, everyone just intermingled.

How big was your high school? I hear this saying a lot but I genuinely do not believe that some 200+ students per grade all intermingled and did not have any social groups at all.

High school can be an absolute killerfor some kids because of how dumb teenage minds work. That said though, people break off into social groups for necessity and often to compliment personality especially in that age bracket. I find it hard to believe it when people propose that everyone was friends with everyone.

I find it more in the realm of believable if there just wasn't any active bullying or asshole behaviours towards your peers.

I'm amazed at how quickly my response went from "well that's kinda vapid but not really questionable" to "haha oh wow wtf is this?!?"

Apparently this sorority would have a night where everyone gets a magic marker and circles areas of fat on other girls that they have to try to make skinnier

Source: girlfriend was in a sorority at Alabama and new a couple girls in alpha phi

the shiny teeth, it's blinding!

Private school and was fairly exclusive so there werent a lot of people, definitely not 200 or so, you'd be looking at maybe 80 ish tops. Obviously some people were better friends with others but there was never any 'group' of people picked on or singled out. You could have potentially have said 'well that guy is a jock, that guys a nerd, that guys one of those freaky goths' if you wanted to get pedantic about it, but no one or any one group was ever singled out and made fun of or belittled nor would anyone ever avoid, not talk to or pick on someone for not being 'in their particularly social group.'

I don't understand, is the video supposed to be an advert to other girls? Because it doesn't seem so...

I'd say it's inoffensive though, nothing that bad about it. The music did offend me however, is this the kind of crap teens listen to nowadays? I had to mute it.

There's nothing wrong with that video. I mean, it looks like a 'Real Housewives of xxx' opening, but there's nothing demeaning degrading or offensive about it.

Well you already pointed out 2 major differences in experience. Small class sizes and private funded education.

I went to a school of 1800 people with a graduating class of 400. I can pretty conclusively say that traditional bullying was rather minimal. But intermingle implies friendship and contact and I can say that if people werent friends they were basically invisible to eqch other.

I'm mostly just saying its hard to believe an environment where even 80 high school kids can all be friends given how much growth and change occurs in people high school.

Tired of being...whatever you are? Totes join Apha Phi and like be one of us!

Requirements: Bronzer, Blonde hair dye kit, must be thin (we're totes not discriminating...we just don't like fat people)

Watched this with wife last night. We were both struggling to see the big deal. My only thought was they sure put a lot of effort in to something that got taken down really quickly.

THis is what I'd imagine SmokyDave's fantasies look like.
Mine too.
Was this a recruitment video for the sororities or the fraternities? Like serious question! Don't see the big deal.

Didn't see anything wrong with the video aside from the terrible music. They'd be flat out lying if they had a bunch of minorities in the video, Alabama ain't about that life.

Then again, I don't find attractive women in advertising automatically "problematic". Has anyone considered that they tailor their recruitment so that they all do actually look like that? For better or worse, it's not illegal. Membership is entirely voluntary and subjective.

Some frats/sororities can be dickish some are not. In the end those people are making connections that will hopefully be beneficial to them post university. The old phrase "it's not what you know but who you know"

I always love the idea of people networking through their national fraternal organizations. They're completely different chapter to chapter but they act like they're all totally brothers, it's the most ridiculous concept.

I was never in a frat but are you saying that connections are not made there or are? I always got the impression from the few people I know that were in frats that those connections didn't just disappear once they left school.

I think it's fine.

Also this type of video doesn't only appeal to men, there are plenty of young women who want to associate themselves as part of a 'pretty girls club' which is what the video purports this sorority is.

This is like the Platonic Ideal of a sorority recruiting video lmao.

Haters keep hating. Come to Vanderbilt, girls.

He's saying it's ridiculous that you can become a member of a national Brotherhood when you've only met maybe 200 members tops during your 4 years.

What should be criticized was that that video was hilariously stupid.

But yes, the complete lack of diversity is blatantly obvious.

Aside from the fact it is nothing but white girls which shows a lack of diversity, I don't actually view anything wrong with the video

This. Your immediate connections that you meet on campus will last, certainly, but the idea that it extends out beyond your chapter is silly.

Maybe it works for some people, but what I'm saying is that believing it connects two people who would otherwise have no relationship is bonzo. A fraternity has got to be the perfect definition of Vonnegut's granfalloon.

Hah, this is what Alpha Phi looked like at my school too. The complaints about diversity are fair (but that's a way bigger problem than just this video and just this chapter,) but I'm not sure I buy the idea that it was 'titillating' or 'aimed at teenage boys.' The impression I got was definitely more of a recruiting "You want to be one of us because we're beautiful and obviously that will extend to you" and not a "GAZE UPON OUR HOTNESS AND DESPAIR, YE THIRSTY CHUMPS"

I'm on mobile and just saw the first seconds of the video, full screen, not through the yt app

But yeah... I dun goofed

Don't worry about it; you actually made watching the video and reading the thread not a complete waste of time. For that I salute you.

So did they take it down because they didn't like the criticism or because the school asked them to? Since all their other social media is gone I wouldn't be surprised if the school asked them to, schools in general like to pretend that sororities and fraternities are about giving back to the community and all and this video more or less just reinforces the idea most people have about sororities in general.

Video worked for me, I'd def join that sorority.

Edit: Half the girls in the video are brunettes, seems like the blondes must be doing it right if they get all the attention.

Good for them, looks like they has a lot fun creating this video. I didn't see anything that seemed too gratuitous, so I don't see the harm. Standard stuff from what you see at the beach or a gym..lol

Vid made me cringe. Bunch of shit-for-brains barbie brats who wouldn't last two seconds in the real world without daddies money. Thought this kind of thing only existed in Hollywood movies, sad to see it's a reality.
