Ever since the speculation started years ago I've hated the idea of it not really being Big Boss because that would mean that we've spent a game not on Big Boss, but some other one-off guy who ACTUALLY turned to villainy and madness.
 
I think I'd be more disappointed if Kojima's musical choices with heavy handed hints had no pay off than I would be about not playing as the real Big Boss.
Besides all this falls into Zero's glorification of BB's deeds as they mentioned in 4.

Who knows, I know the phrasing was basically implying that when Big Boss & Frank left the US to fight a war, that was when he fought Solid Snake and was "killed", which was in the 90s.
So the timeline is wide enough where we might not see anything and all that happens after TPP since it's still only 1984 when the game starts, but I'm hoping we get something.

Unless there's a secret ending the dream died a few years ago...and if it's Mantis then it seems that the Mammal Pod is used in the Metal Gear, more as a weapon rather than in Peace Walker where it was meant to be a deterrent etc...so yeah...if people worried this wouldn't have Kojima style craziness and mindfuckery...

The leak still does not make any sense. Just to bring it all together...the events of GZ that the players played never actually happened. It was a simulation for someone who wants to be Big Boss. But the player will play the actual Ground Zeroes mission in TPP.

So Venom and Big Boss are working together...to achieve what?

Yeah, that would kind of make Big Boss the ultimate Mary Sue character if he wasn't actually fallen into evil.

Context will make or break whether the (speculated) twist/reveal/whatever will actually be effective.

It wasn't a simulation, it was a faulty memory of this new clone of BB, at least from my understanding of these spoilers so far.

But looking at the franchise at the whole, it sounds like a real shit plot device. Like, not absurd and weird like we are used to from Kojima, but just really lazy.

Trying to retcon "BB was actually a good guy the whole time, it was a clone that was doing the evil stuff" now would be an absolute bummer.

Seeing Big Boss's descent into being the "bad guy" is the character arch we needed, and it makes the end of MGS 4 a bit confusing.

Both the earlier leak and the guide say that Quiet goes to the hospital to kill Big Boss, but that may just all be a set up event to help "train" the player aka Venom Snake aka not Big Boss into becoming a good soldier.

The Nurse doesn't need to be Quiet though, I don't think that's anything.

If that's the whole story then I agree with you, but if Ishmael or someone else is the real Big Boss, there's still room for things to happen.

If it's something stupid like "big boss died, venom snake is a clone but he's evil and he made outer heaven, not the real BB!!!" then I'd hate it as much as you.

That being said the new metal gear looks cool. Totally get some ZOE feels.

Saw it coming that you are not actually playing as Big Boss. Fully expect cloning (and not just of BB) to play a huge part in the story.

Only 2 major locations is a real bummer mostly because there isnt a surprise left. Maybe they should have kept Africa a complete secret.



And I am out. Everything I wanted to know I now know. Will learn the rest when I get my hands on it
 
I'm still not seeing why people are so hellbent on big boss being a murderous psychopath. Kojima already did some heavy ret conning and of the original metal gear games, and turned Big Boss into a sympathetic character in MGS4.

People seem to want a narrative that was flipped on its head previously, to resume.

Still does not make sense. Why would Kojima put another clone? It's pretty stupid in the context. Honestly, if this Venom Snake is not Solidus I would be disappointed.

Like Paz did have a bomb but only one which they removed, then she changes her name.

If GZ is a faulty memory then why is Ishmael who is apparently the medic all scarred up?

There's a fairly wide gulf between sympathy and absolution.

It's possible to feel sympathetic toward Big Boss being a tragic figure who will fall into darkness at the end of MGS3, while not going all the way by increasingly showing that Big Boss was actually the real victim and not even directly responsible for most of it. Solid Snake hated this guy for a reason, and Big Boss felt guilty enough in MGS4 to admit that he was totally wrong and accept death. If these spoilers are true, maybe a true ending will establish that Big Boss goes and does the exact same stuff that the protagonist did, but it would still feel weak that the actual "turn to darkness" didn't even really happen with him.

There's also the factor that you've spent an entire game watching Big Boss connect and grow a relationship with characters, and go through this entire scheme specifically for revenge against Cipher and Skull Face for the events of GZ, only to reveal that these events never actually happened to Big Boss and the events of GZ didn't even happen that way. There's MGS2-style "well, what really happened is up to you" style meta-fuckery, and then there's Shyamalan-level "lol what a twist" BS.

I thought the implication was that Big Boss is off doing his heel turn whilst Venom Snake or whoever is being the "hero".

This is the last game in the series. They could have made Venom an antagonist instead of the main character. Big Boss fighting his shadow self would have been interesting but instead we're getting a bizzaro team up. What's even the point since Venom will apparently achieve nothing going by future games.

MGS 2 had a cool idea with a literal recreation of the Shadow Moses incident, the Patriots AI trying to make sense out of that chaos.
But this is just dumb. Why try to salvage Big Boss like this, it's ok for him to go bad? By comparison Solid's been completely shit on.

So let me get this straight, we STILL don't know the ending because it's omitted from the guide?
Man Kojima must be wanting to keep it watertight.
Why is everyone saying Venom isn't BB when the guide doesn't explicitly say that.

tldr: until someone leaks cutscenes we don't know fo sure.
 
I don't buy the Gray Fox theory. But it's certain that we're playing as notBB for the majority of the game.

What if at the end, after we have put our heart and soul into Diamond Dogs, the real Big Boss shows up and actually kills you (Venom)? And then he turns DD into Outer Heaven? Then we get to play as the real Big Boss and do all the side missions and stuff?

Edit: People, you really need to stop saying we do not play as Big Boss, the guide never explicitly states that. It does not elaborate on the ending, nor who Ishmael is. We will NOT find out yet so just chill out spreading false rumours.
 
I think Kojima's biggest issue is that he has way too many Authorial pets
You could be fooled into thinking the series was about The Boss, Big Boss and Mantis.
3 Best buddies who were torn apart by fate.

I'm joking of course but he's been pushing them all so hard

Also, I don't have the image right now but the guide said the Medic is literally Big Boss's most trusted guy or something. lol

From all of the factual hints we've gotten so far, it's looking very likely that we're not playing as Big Boss. To say otherwise is wishful thinking.

I'm not feeling that Ahab isn't BB angle. I guess it will depend on how well this is executed but at face value, it sounds like "wasting" a game on a third Snake protagonist who has little bearing on the overall story.

I assume Ishmael (BB?) will be the narrator of the story while Ahab (VS) is the crazy monomaniac asshole. Funny reference, in that Kojima already described the MGS2 twist with the Watson/Holmes dichotomy.

4. Last battle is Mantis/MG, but there is indeed a secret ending that reveals the twist.
 
I don't buy some of these spoilers.

Firstly we have seen Snake being buddy Buddy with Skullface in a few trailers.

Secondly what about Zero's endgame with the AI's, specifically the launch of JD into orbit (this was mentioned in MGS4).

None of the leaks mention the above, I can buy that something's have been scrapped in the very early trailers just not the recent ones.
