Sorry if it wasn't clear, I'm specifically interested in knowing about character boss battles. As in, classic one on one MGS boss battles where you fight a named character with cool abilities and unique attacks. Don't really care about boss encounters where you fight a giant vehicle or a squad of "special" enemies because I already expect those.

It seems like forever since we've had boss fights like The Fear, The Fury, Volgin, Ocelot, Vamp, etc. Even the fights in MGS4 were mostly either gimmick battles or a boss character + a squad of "special" scrubs just to fill up space. Peace Walker was entirely vehicle battles and you don't even get to fight Galvaz. :/
Relax, it's probably going to be fine, reports of the Quiet fight sounded pretty exciting.

Did I read only half the spoilers? Dude I was here posting the spoilers as they came out, I even translated a couple and made a list of them.

Nothing is certain, but what I have gathered from the spoilers is that near the end of the game the base is infected so the real Big Boss comes out and kills everyone to save the world. This causes him to be consumed with guilt and becomes obsessed with finding and killing Skullface as well as becoming determined to create his "Outer Heaven" a place without government and a place where soldiers are free to fight.

The only dark thing we will witness is Big Boss killing his soldiers, not exactly evil if he was killing the infection and saving the world.

I don't think Big Boss necessarily has to be evil. He has his ideology which is in conflict with the patriots. I am sure he thinks he is doing what is in the best interest for his soldiers in any time period. His goal isn't to just be evil.

Kojima has said this game isn't going to be canon with everything he has written thus far as well, so who knows what that means for BB's arc.

Now seems like a poor time to start caring about the sanctity of these characters anyway. I just want to see Kojima write a mess.

Yeah. It's definitely lacking in that regard. I guess Volgin fits the bill but ones a scripted chase and idk about the 2nd time you fight him. Maybe Mantis will have unique interactions as well as Eli.

Well, that's 3. MGS2 had...Fortune(Scripted), Fatman x 1, Vamp x 2, Solidus x 1, Olga x 1, Harrier.

MGSV so far has-
Volgin x 2
Quiet x 2
Eli x 3(?)
Psycho Mantis x 1

That's if we take away the vehicle/group encounters from both games. If those fights can be unique enough, then it wouldn't be that bad

Forgot about the Volgin one.

At no point do the leaks from the official guide mention a cline.

The guide does however give strong clues that the Medic from Ground Zeroes is the version of Big Boss we play as in The Phantom Pain. This version is also known as Ahab.

It also gives clues that Ishmael is the real Big Boss.

And apologies to everyone else for posting this again, just annoys me a little that people are confusing speculation with what's actually printed in the official guide :-)

My mistake. I meant somebody else other than BB himself.

It's just that I've seen the word clone mentioned here a couple of times and that's what came to mind.

Venom rocking that "broken inside" look and a nice color scheme.

I doubt it's going to be "fine". It's going to be exactly what I expected, because the signs were all there. The game will be great, just like Peace Walker was great, but the MGS of old with the emphasis on classic action game bosses is definitely no more. I just wanted confirmation of that so I no longer have to hold on to some false hope.

you have to bellllieve. For all we know Kojima asked the guide makers to fake everything. One last fooling.

....
MGS3 and MGS4 set the bar pretty high for boss battles. Sure MGS4 is hated, but it had great boss battles in spades. MGS3, even though the bosses were weak characters, their fights were interesting and fun. MGS1 ofc is the goat.

Just had the funniest conversation about this on IRC. My sides are hurting.

<duckroll> it is sad that as MGS became more and more about the Boss, it became less and less about bosses
<duckroll> !!!! i should write that down
<duckroll> and make a thread
<Narag> central thesis will be mgs had no further need for bosses after you fought THE boss

I am /dead

So Venom Snake is medic?

That's as good a guess as we have right now based on a guide that dropped some clues, but outright says they're avoiding spoilers.

The medic's current face, when shown by PC dudes do some funky stuff to see it, looks like a super generic place-holder.

I suspect it's going to be the custom MGO character that apparently the single player games makes you create, or someone else entirely.

Wait, so they'll sell guide DLC for the boss fights?

Btw, can somebody tell me who's medic? Also, isn't Venom Snake just an alias for BB? I didn't finish or paid too much attention to Peace Walker.

I don't think any game, let alone a Metal Gear game will ever have a boss unit as unique as FOXHOUND in MGS1 ever again. MGS3 came close with the amount of variety in those battles, but man, FOXHOUND are the best forever.

I also liked Ghost Babel and AC!D 2's boss units. Black Chamber from Ghost Babel are so underrated it's a shame. Looks like in terms of bosses it will be similar to MGS2's - less of them in general.

The hilarious part about the double part and ishmael/medic/bb is that people were complaining that keifer doesn't talk alot, but it might turn out that he's voicing 3 different characters.

Do you know what's funny? All the press saying that they "completed" the game but we know differently lol.
Just like the French mag said they didn't get the story lol, because they didn't unlock the real ending lmao.

It seems like this game was made to be really hard for press people to get a real understanding of. Most people who played through the game seem confused or have no real idea what's going on, or are like "well alright then."
It's kind of genius but also risky to keep everything so vague up until the last minute.

Also, a lot them, the French reviewer included, seem to have skipped a lot of the side missions, which appear essential to understanding the full story.

The real Naomi Hunter disappeared in the middle east.

I meant that we never found out Naomi's real name before stealing that lady's identity. I forgot the real Naomi Hunter disappeared in the Middle East, but that's a small detail really, since she never reappears and goes "how dare you" to fake Naomi. I honestly think Kojima forgot about Naomi's fake identity when he wrote MGS4, since she never reverted back to her original identity...

No but it's curious that Naomi was found in Rhodesia while the "real" Naomi was someone who vanished.

Both areas being places that MGSV is in the vicinity of.
Quiet's real name is probably Naomi Hunter

There was no point because it sounded like Frank helped her get the Naomi identity, so she wasn't going to throw away a tie to him, they have the same last name, his is just the german version.

It is curious how we've not heard if Naomi and Gray Fox turn up in the game yet. Your theory rings true, though and would make sense. We'll see if Kojima even remembers to include such details into MGS5. I was hoping we would see Big Boss saving Sniper Wolf at some point during the game and him acquiring the "Saladin" name among the people there due to his heroism. Just made me think with the wolves appearing in MGS5 we'd see Sniper Wolf too, but eh, guess not. I wonder since other FOXHOUND members are in like Liquid and Mantis, was thinking we might also see young Raven or find out his connection to Ocelot, they do adopt the name "The Sons of Big Boss" obviously each one with different feelings about Big Boss. Liquid hating him, Wolf falling in love with him, Mantis and Raven we are unsure about really and Ocelot obviously worshipping the guy.

I hope they show, or even cassette tape the events that leads to Millers kidnapping, and who mutilated him in this brutal result.
I hope the real BB has nothing to do with it, because Kaz described him as monster in later events.

I we're going with the whole Ishmael isn't BB, then I would actually believe BB has something to do with Kaz's fate. We found out at the end of PW that he's working for Cipher, so maybe BB used Kaz to train his new clone after torturing him for info on Zero. #speculation
