Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

I'm not even close to finishing the game but I've skimmed the IGN/GameSpot reviews and I'm starting to suspect that there might indeed be a hidden "true" ending that GameSpot saw but IGN didn't. (That'd help explain why GameSpot raves about the story while IGN says it's disappointing.) Just guessing, though. No spoilers here, but from what I've seen so far, some things MGSV are ostensibly optional but should probably be played or else it seems like you'll miss out on big things.

Man I don't want to say much more than this but...your suspicious aren't off base, having completed it.

Jason from Kotaku contradicts this:

I'd agree with Jason re: Quiet. It's explained.

There's also a massive secret that the other person may not have found that deals with Quiet.

Does anyone know if that "if you got Arkham Knight PC with the purchase of a new GPU, the retailer will give you a copy of MGS5" thing is legit/still working?

I haven't even installed AK (and don't plan to until its fixed), and would much rather play MGS5.

Ugh, I was really worried about this. Gametrailers says Africa and Afghanistan are the only two areas in the game.

Pretty big bummer for me.

Oh no, woman wears revealing gear, stop the presses.

How dare Quiet dress this way.
Terrible game..

Come on man. This kind of dismissal of the conversation is why people get upset with the video game community.

If the Quiet outfit is just fan service then we need to accept that and deal with the implications head on. Not hand wave it away...

That's hilarious.

Damn, this was my worry and it's confirmed. Disappointing :(

Well at least we won't hear that phrase anymore. Every time it was brought up, "but Kojima said." That's probably gonna get way more attention when the game is released tho.

Interesting. I have wondered if there was going to be a secret ending like Peace Walker.

I'm shocked the story isn't all that great. This is a MGS game afterall, maybe it has to do with Kojima wanting the characers actions to do the story telling rather than too many cutscenes.

Of course I won't say it here, but if what I read on the Spoiler Thread is true, then the "reason" is fucking ridiculous as per Kojima's usuals, and no one will feel shame over their words and deeds.

The explanation is very Metal Gear-ish. Take that as you will.

I'm guessing Ocelot double crossed her at some point earlier before the game by stealing her actual clothing, and even then, it was so he could double cross some other person which required taking her clothing, which simultaneously, was in order to double cross himself and ultimately, double cross the player.

I didn't like it. It's decent, about the best praise I could muster for it. But one thing is for sure, I am glad Kojima is never making another MGS game. Just a decade of disappointment since the incredible MGS3. A weak "finale" that feels like an unnecessary entry. A little too long, a little too tedious at times, and poorly paced.

Kind of surprised with the very positive reviews, but then maybe I shouldn't be. Open world games are kind of the thing nowadays. I'm expecting it to be a love/hate kind of game. I lean towards the hate, but MGS4 broke me a long time ago so my expectations were always low.

Whatever happened to balance. Just go from one extreme to the other.

And it huuuuuurts. It huuuuuurts so baaaaad.

I have a feeling this is where the opinions of people who have played MGS since the first one are going to fall.

The new gen of gamers could end up loving it, however.

The EGM Now review says similar things about the story being sparse, or it having narrative threads that are left "unturned". Wonder how many review outlets didn't have access to the complete story, if this is indeed the case.

If only. If what I read is true, then your explanation would've been better.

I've very, very glad to see the game has reviewed well so far, but as the impressions have been glowing year in year out, it wasn't too much of a surprise.

Still welcome to see.

Jason from Kotaku contradicts this:

I don't really read that as a contradiction, the costume could have a ridiculous reason and support O'Brien's claim that it didn't make people "Eat their words"

Edit: I don't see where she said "no reason" was it another tweet/review?

GameTrailers score is 9.3

I gotta say, the review event seems to have been a little restrictive, reviewers briefly experience the FOB missions as a separate demo and it seems that didn't get a hold of MGO.

I'm looking at the "spoiler" that people are freaking out about, and it's someone drawing a conclusion that a baseless fan theory might not be true because the reviews don't confirm it.

Calm the hell down.

Well, thanks for the confirmation, but you get why people are antsy right? If you don't want to get spoiled, you can't go and confirm that that's NOT a spoiler, for fear of... well, you know.

Looked like he was speaking with authority from something a review had stated outright. No way of knowing otherwise. Thanks for easing my mind.

I bet the Quiet explanation is buried in tapes that most people haven't had time to listen to yet.

I think it has more to do with it being open world. You might hit every tape perfect and get missions that feed into it just right and hit the true ending, while someone else might not and have a worse experience.

I think a lot of people are reading some assessments the wrong way.

Sparse doesn't mean "not all that great." At least in my experience with the game, that's how I feel. It's definitely more condensed than your average Metal Gear game, but streets ahead of your average action/stealth title.

I love review threads because you have the first many pages with all this hype for reviews and a few months from now you will have some of these same people talking about how reviews don't really matter lol.

Great reviews though. No surprise. Has there been a poorly reviewed mainline entry of this series? Can't think of one really. Always great games

You probably hated the cutscenes because you're missing 25 years worth of story.
So the chick with the bomb was an important character from the past? Same with the autistic kid? The scenes were acted so over the top, especially Miller at the end. I guess I wasn't expecting CoD level escape-at-the-last-second fake drama

Can you tell us if Quiet's other outfits aren't just bikini texture swaps?
